You feel the same way about the Staal contract and the previous Girardi contract?

I always say it. The UFA market is terrible. Don't venture into it for non-difference makers. You sign your players that you want to keep early for non-UFA prices.

You still pay for UFA years for players that are bridging from RFA to UFA in that timespan. Every team in the NHL has vets on it. Your fantasy team of 24 year olds isn't winning anything despite the fact that you have better contracts. Every team has, and needs, players that have experience.

Go look at D that have played 300+ NHL games that are aged 27-29 and see what kind of contracts they have and get back to me. This isn't a bad deal for the NYR.

Smith brings it in the playoffs when it counts, we need guys like that because the playoffs is all that matters. Brass was a key loss in that regard. Also, getting Smith signed now gives the Rangers a bit more leverage in negotiations with Shatty

We gave him me a NTC? Makes the deal a lot worse...

If they did give an NTC that's just awful. Haven't they learned their lessons? I wished the CBA banned these cancers

Really like this signing. A tad more expensive that i'd had hoped, but that is splitting hairs really. Should help our defense immensely.

Edit : But what is this talk about an NTC ? Haven't they learned yet that NTC's are the devil ? I mean.. seriously :)

opinion or stats to back that up?

Smith is very good at suppressing shots when generally means he's very good at defending.

Klein could never move the puck all that well either
I've always been of the opinion that Smith's defensive strengths are in making sure he's not playing in the defensive zone, not what he does when he's there. I have no number to back that up. I'm a fraud.

Good signing, can't imagine him getting less that 4x4 elsewhere. Decent right D under 30 aren't exactly in surplus.

I'd assume if he wasn't playing in the defensive zone then his shot generation numbers would be much better but I also have no numbers to back that up

I really just like that he's a better skater and better with the puck (barring the occasional flub) than Klein

Who cares what Detroit fans think about the contract?

There Smith was a 1st round pick who never lived up to his potential.

Here he is a solid second pair guy who brings an edge and is a good shot suppressor which is what our defense needs.

With today's cap hit you're not going to get a defenseman of Smith's caliber as a full UFA for much less than this deal.

On a limited NTC, you can still deal the player, you just have a group of teams the player would have to approve a deal to be traded to. And, the player can be sent to the AHL. The NMC gives the player all the power.

Yeah, issue can be bad: See Phaneuf.

Usually guys aren't such dicks about it.

Very rare does a guy get asked to waived. But the issue can linger when teams are trying to make other moves.

Only recent one that was amicable was Hartnell.

But CLB had to be a premium to Vegas, and Hartnell was a consideration.

Limited NTC's or full NTC's can be waived. They still suck from the team's perspective but they are what they are.

NMC's are hardly different in the most recent CBA since you can only save up to $950k or whatever the amount is when sending a guy down. It used to be you could bury a guy in the minors to save his full cap hit. An NMC prevented that. Now it's not really an option for guys signing contracts in the $3M+ range.

I don't know the details of his contract but an NMC wouldn't be any different than an NTC for Smith.

Smith has a limited NTC, he still can't block a trade to every team. The NMC just means you can't waive or demote them. Which isn't as big a deal now that you can't bury much salary in the minors.

True, it's not as much of a an advantage as it used to be. But, for example, it means the Rangers could be stuck with Staal all year as a 7th Dman, and not even get the minimal savings. The limited NTC complaint is overblown IMO.

I'm sorry, but I don't know how you guys didn't lose it at "he's just as bad offensively than Marc Staal"

Guess which one has 8 points in their last 30 games and guess which one has 2? Guess which one can actually skate with the puck and still make tape-to-tape passes?

Based on?

It's not like we overpaid by a MILLION AAV or 1.5AAV, It's like 250K ... sheesh man you guys are penny pinchers.

He was looking for like 3.25 at most when we traded for him, and I didn't even think he was worth 4m.
He was good in the playoffs (and somehow the coach stopped playing him as games went on) but before that he was just whatever, and I don't want to pay a whatever defensemen who the coach stops playing 4.35m for 4 years

Very happy with this deal, good player who can skate, is physical and steps up his game when it matters most.

THIS,, game 6 against the Habs , Smith was flat out unstoppable, I saw it live with my own eyes ,guy took a beating and was still our best defenseman that night , I know with this group it's not saying much ,but he earned my respect

I still have my doubts about this team being a playoff team. I know it's still early in the offseason, but I'm not all that sold on potential moves unless something comes out of left field
