Damn it Sather, why the hell are you giving ridiculous contracts to people.

Whatever this doesnt go against the cap....right???????

Let him eat Dolan's money

Why would you care what the coach makes? The only reason we care about the players now is because of the cap. When the Rangers signed a crappy free agent before the cap none of us care that Gulf and Western had to pay them off to go away.

Torts got an extension after 10-11. He got another extension this season. Torts has two years remaining on his Rangers contract. He never entered the last season of his contract as a lame duck. Torts didn't get 5 years in 2009.

AV's deal is worth 10 million, doesn't that put you guys over the cap? :sarcasm:

In all seriousness though, that's a lot for a HC.

I like to measure value in Stu Bickels.

One unit of Stu Bickel is worth $750,000.

Vigneault is worth 10+ Stu Bickels, therefore, this is a bargain.

:D

I care very little about what he gets paid. It doesn't count against the salary cap.

Hahahahahahaha. I just find it mind blowing for a HC, is he the highest paid coach now? Anyone know?

You paid him $1.8 SO GET OFF OUR BACKS!!!!!1

That's why I said NVM hahahaha. I can't believe we paid him that much as well. I want to know if there are coaches out there that are getting paid more. If so, who? Just seems a tad bit ridiculous for a HC in any sport in my books.

Coaches' salaries are rarely released. We didn't know Tortorella got an extension until after he was fired.

This is all I know about coaches' salaries in sports:

Vigneault got $10 million / 5 years from the Rangers
Vigneault turned down $10 million / 5 years from the Stars
Vigneault got $1.8 million annually from the Canucks
Joe Torre got $5 million from the Yankees and $3 million form the Dodgers
Ed Olcyzk got hired by the Penguins because of his willingness to work for minimum wage.

I think Gretzky's salary as coach of the Phoenix Coyotes - a number of years ago - was something in the excess of *five million dollars*......a year.

Has AV had any proven success with revitalizing slumping players (Richards in this case...if he's still around)? I don't know much about Vancouver besides the obvious. Take this question with a grain of salt as a coach can only do so much.

AV is a wild card. Overall he's a great coach, I just don't know which AV we'll see in New York. He can coach a fast paced up tempo style of hockey, but when things aren't working right he always seems to simplify with a chip and chase offense with fast break outs via pass from the defense. He has certainly found ways to get the most out of certain players, where as others he has completely failed with. Two players who come to mind who AV managed to revitalize are Chris Higgins and Mikael Samuelsson. Both players were pretty marginal coming in, but AV really found a way to fit them in effectively.

In regards to Richards specifically, I feel as if he'll give the guy every chance possible to rebound. AV preaches defensive play, and he loves great two way forwards. But he also understands and sees how more purely offensively players fit into a defensive system. With a player like Richards I imagine he'll pad his offensive zone starts considerably to try to give him an edge and let him flourish in that role, much like he did with the Sedins. It would be stupid to buy out Richards without giving AV a year to work with him.

I think coaches can affect games as much as a player.

I agree. Just stating how a coach makes more than a guy who's putting his body on the line baffles me sometimes. I guess with AV's pedigree, it could warrant to pay him the upper echelon of coaches. I'm curious as to how much some other coaches make as well now...

YUP. You're 100 % correct!
Cost of living in NY is MUCH greater than Vancouver;)

Hahaha. I'm not too sure about that bud ;)

Yeah, that's kind of mind blowing. I expected closer to 1. I mean the sport as a whole and their wages can't compare to a baseball salary. Baseball is a whole new level compared to hockey when it comes to Salary.

 at people who care about how much he makes, it has zero effect on the team/cap or anything at all.

Mike shanahan makes 7 mil per and I think he's still getting paid from Denver.

Joe Micheletti and Alain Vigneault were roommates on the 1981-82 Blues.

Joe spoke to Jeff Blair on the FAN590 this morning

AV will change the defensive mindset of the team. A calmer exterior. The team needs that. The team needs the freedom of not being afraid to make a mistake. Freedom to make plays.

I still sometimes get a teensy bit creeped out at how you know all these things RB
