Coaches' salaries are rarely released. We didn't know Tortorella got an extension until after he was fired.

This is all I know about coaches' salaries in sports:

Vigneault got $10 million / 5 years from the Rangers
Vigneault turned down $10 million / 5 years from the Stars
Vigneault got $1.8 million annually from the Canucks
Joe Torre got $5 million from the Yankees and $3 million form the Dodgers
Ed Olcyzk got hired by the Penguins because of his willingness to work for minimum wage.

There are multiple soccer coaches earning more than 10 million dollars per year with Mourinho at the top with an estimated 16 million anually.

I'd say Vigneault's salary isn't too bad ;)

I think Gretzky's salary as coach of the Phoenix Coyotes - a number of years ago - was something in the excess of *five million dollars*......a year.

He was president of Hockey Operations, as well as another title, plus head coach...

for that pithole he had to deal with, 5M is deserving

Joe Micheletti and Alain Vigneault were roommates on the 1981-82 Blues.

Joe spoke to Jeff Blair on the FAN590 this morning

AV will change the defensive mindset of the team. A calmer exterior. The team needs that. The team needs the freedom of not being afraid to make a mistake. Freedom to make plays.

 Then you may have hired the wrong coach.

Mark my words, Torts will not coach in NHL. EVER. Not because I want it so, but because coaches like him are available, he is nothing special. Except for his media handling. That is known well. Look, all disciplinarians are dictators, all dictators are secretive. All secretive folks do not like media because they afraid that their authority is being undermined by those headless writers. That is always like that everywhere, hockey or not. NHL needs disciplinarians; those coaches are able to bring about change. FAST. NHL, however, do not need an embarrassment that Torts brought up last year. He will never be forgiven for it. Thus, he will follow Sean Avery footsteps in being NHL's Pariah.

You wanna put your money where your bigmouth is pal?

Betcha he has a job before training camps open and if he gets the Vancouver job, he'll win a cup there unlike the overrated fool we just hired who couldn't!

I heard Elliotte Friedman on HNIC on NHL Network Radio on SiriusXM today say that Messier's future with the Rangers will be interesting to see, he said he know Messier REALLY wanted the job and he hears that Messier won't become an assistant with Vigneault, but that could change. He probably won't get the GM position when Glen retires. And, he may MAY be handed the head coaching job in Hartford, or at least offered it to him...would be interesting....

Anyways, exciting for a new coach, we'll see how it goes!

I'll take that bet.

Congrats Rangers, you just locked up the best coach available on the market IMO.

THIS

People can argue about the pro's and con's but in the end this is the best coach currently available. Stop talking about Tippett for instance. I would like Laviolette or Quinneville, but both are not available.

AV is the best coach currently available and a guy who knows what it takes to win games

I'll take that bet.

What part of it? That he won't get a job before training camp or that if he gets the Vancouver job, he won't win a cup with them?

Gotta admit AV underachieved bigtime with a team whose roster is a heck of a lot better than the one he is inheriting with the Rangers!

If being one win away from a cup is "underachieving", yes, yes he did.

Switch Khabibulin circa 2004 with Luongo circa 2011 in their respective games sevens, and we're talking about AV having a Cup and Tortorella not having one.

Avery was one of the best entertainers on ice. What killed his carrer was his off ice stuff. Obviously, the case has been made ( by Torts, but it didn't matter by whom) he was useless as a player. Similarly no one would ever admit that Torts coaching career was over because his escapades during last year playoffs. He will get some looks, will get interviews, but wont get a job.

I think he will get another NHL job.

What about losing 10 of his last 11 playoff games?

Tort's won a cup and AV probably won't get that opportunity as coach here. I can't wait until he looks down the bench and he doesn't see "The Sedins" to put out on the ice!

Alain Vigneault, who was fired on May 22 after seven seasons behind Vancouver's bench, agreed late last week to succeed Tortorella in New York, as the Daily News first reported, and is expected to be introduced officially as the Rangers' head coach on Thursday.

Names being mentioned as possible assistants to Vigneault include Newell Brown, his second assistant the past three seasons in Vancouver; and Ulf Samuelsson, the former Rangers defenseman and current head coach of Modo Hockey of the Swedish Elite League, according to a report. Glen Gulutzan, recently fired from his post as the Dallas Stars' head coach, is on the market, as well.

Mark Messier will not be an assistant on Vigneault's staff, and it remains to be seen how Messier proceeds from the disappointment of being passed over for a Rangers coaching job he wanted. Will the Captain remain in New York's front office? Would he be willing to coach at another level, say the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack? Would he simply walk away?

Sather is still in California. He will be traveling to the NHL GM Meetings on Wednesday in Boston. Then he arrives in New York. Brooks had that this morning.

Anders Forsberg is the Modo head coach. Not Samuelsson. Elliotte Friedman linked Gulutzan to the Rangers today. Gulutzan has interest in some AHL openings such as Toronto replacing Dallas Eakins.

In less than 2 months with the Rangers I considered Lunqvist (by his play, not stats) the best goalie I'd ever seen on the Rangers. And I go back to the late 60's.

I go back to mid 60's and have considered him the best Rangers goalie I had ever seen similarly quickly.

Btw, what the hell kind of scenario is "switching Khabibulin circa 2004 with Luongo circa 2011" supposed to be?? The bottom line is AV had the superior team in 2011 with a 3-2 lead in the SCF and he "choked" bigtime.

You just need an excuse to trash on the Rangers. The Rangers could have hired a young Scotty Bowman and you'd trash the hiring.

The scenario is that if AV didn't have a sieve in net for 4/7 of the cup final, he'd have a cup. And Torts wouldn't with a sieve.

On May 2, 2011, Ulf Samuelsson, who has been an assistant coach in the National Hockey League (NHL), was named the head coach of Modo Hockey.[11]

Ulf Samuelsson becomes the new head coach of Swedish Elite League team MODO

Could not find anywhere where Ulf has been fired since being hired in 2011...
