who in the NHL today would be the equivalent of Mark Messier arriving on broadway back in 92’?

When the captain arrived in the 91’-92’ season he had already played 12 seasons on a highly successful Edmonton team put up 1,000+ points in just over 800 games. His resume also included multiple cups just in case somehow anyone forgot.

The trade featured David Shaw, Bernie Nicholls, Steven Rice and Louie DeBrusk heading to the Oil for Messier & Jeff Beukeboom.

What would that be the equivalent today?

Would it be a stretch to consider Zibanejad is Bernie N? Bernie had just put up some serious numbers the previous years similar to what Mika did here. Steven Rice was a 20th OV 1st round pick, Louie deBrusk was a tough nosed 3rd rounder and David Shaw....

Would it be fair to say Crosby & player X coming to NYR for a package around Mika Zibanejad, Kravtsov, Lemieux & player X is fair?

I know Malkin is more suited to be compared to Messier with his added grit that crosby lacks.

Who else in the NHL would be on this level?

BTW, This isn’t a who’s better debate between Messier, Malkin, Ovie, Crosby, Kane, Stamkos yadda yadda yadda ect... thanks.

The 'multiple cups' bit makes it difficult.
Crosby/Malkin as you said
Ovi, but how many years does he have left?
Kopitar from a cups/skill perspective (he's a bit older and is starting to show it)?
Toews from a cups/leadership perspective? But now there's a bigger gulf in skill

and none of that factors in cap-hits. Mess really was basically the perfect storm

Closest I could think of would be Toews or O'Reilly.

Stop drinking, Crosby will retire a pen unless he chases a cup his final year. Malkin and Letang could and should be moved imo

Ryan Getzlaf. He's on the last year of his contract. I would love to have him. But he might just retire, he's 35

We need the Joe Sakic signing that never was. The only 2 guys and they aren't Sakic but might be available are Barkov and Eichel. It's very hard to win without strength down the middle.

big bellymen put herodress refuse performance of kakko instead claimed of lefresgue to make the peoples believe

I absolutely love, LOVE JD but eagerly awaiting the day he swings the axe on the rest of this so called leadership group..

I wonder which dipshit made a new account to troll and spew nonsense in every thread. The grammar was too good to be nopuckluck, so my guess is it was the dude who lied about having a brother on the Russian WJC team and then faked being a Dallas cop after the shooting in 2016. That dude f***ing sucked.

Regarding the leadership issue, I’m not sure it’s as much an issue as it is this team still trying to organically form a new leadership core in a post-Hank era. I think it’s pretty well established that Hank was the epitome of professionalism and work ethic around the NHL, and that type of presence isn’t replaced easily. Losing guys like Fast and Staal - yes, despite his on-ice play - hurts too.

What you’re left with is a group of guys that have filled secondary leadership, but never have had to be the guy in the locker room. It’ll still take some time for the younger guys to start stepping up and guys like Kreider, Mika, Panarin, and Trouba to figure it, but I’m not too concerned yet.

Just started posting.
49 year old lifelong Rangers fan. VERY ALARMED at the state of our team and the role models of all our young super talented assets.

When management and our clueless coach allow Kreider and Zibanejad to be our leaders WE ARE SCREWED! Kreider may be the least effective and physical player in the entire NHL for the physical gifts and strength he possesses. BUT ITS NY AND HES WELL SPOKEN AND POLITE! Zibanejad is Uber talented but as soft as they come.
Horrible role models for guys like Kakko and Laf to look up to. Then we get rid of ADA because he’s loud and inappropriate!
Management has to decide. Do they want to win or be the NHL classiest team and a laughingstock just like our city!

This is dramatic and idiotic.
