I don't see them winning easily, but I do agree it's not an ideal matchup for the Rangers. The Rangers aren't the fastest group - I think the devils speed and forechecking will cause them problems.
Easily was probably too strong of a term, but I think it will be difficult for the rags to keep up with NJ speed. In this matchup , I like the advantage of NJ speed over the roster talent of the rags.

This series will be played a lot on 5 v 5. Playoffs whistles are a bit less and more play will be 5 v 5. Devils have the advantage there. Power Play advantage Rangers. Goalie is a wash. I know you might say Rangers goalie is better, and if this were last year, yes. This year, stat wise, he's not.

Overall this is going to be a close series. at least 6 games. Probably 7 and either team can take it.

Goalies are not a wash. I don't care what the stats say, Shesterkin is very obviously better than Vanacek.

I like New Jersey's defense quite a bit, but I think Shesterkin is the ultimate equalizer in that regards, and I think the Rangers forward corps is the best in the league. Rangers take this series in a very close 6 games I think, but it's going to be some very good hockey.

I don't think any Devils fan is arguing that. If anything, it's showing more confidence in our defense than the Rangers defense.

We have good "defensive" metrics, but that's only because we don't have to play a lot of defense. When we are forced to defend, we are pretty poor, especially Hamilton, Severson, and Smith. Siegenthaler was playing excellent defense earlier in the year but has fallen off a fair amount. Graves is pretty meh. Bahl has shown some decent flashes. Marino is easily our most reliable defender. Luckily we'll have Luke Hughes joining before the playoffs.

I like the Rangers defensive core over the Devils in terms of being able to defend and break the puck out under pressure. Fox, Lindgren, Miller, Trouba, and Schneider are all fairly reliable.

On paper the Rangers probably win in 5 but IRL the Devils are the better team right now and would probably sweep the Rangers unless Igor steals a game or two. Depends on where NYR is at in a month really. Too early to call.

Shesterkin was a better goalie than Louis Domingue too and the Pens were a Trouba elbow away from taking that series. And he showed a historic level last season, compared to this one. Just saying.

You just never know with goalies.

I don't think Luke Hughes is going to be much of an ace in the hole when it comes to in-zone defense. If it's anywhere, it's going to be at the other end of the ice.

He'll help at breaking the puck out under pressure. That's probably our biggest weakness defensively and he's really evasive with the size, skill, footspeed, and IQ to make life hard on forechecking opponents.

But yeah I don't anticipate his off puck defense to move the needle for us.

I’m trying to be objective here because clearly I am a devils fan, but I really struggle to see how on paper the rangers win in 5? Rangers have the obvious advantage in net, but the devils have a better top-6, their current 3rd line of Palat/Haula/Boqvist will give any other 3rd line fits, the 4th line is whatever, and yes adam fox is easily the best D on both teams but the devils have more depth on D.

Don't know which way it's going. But I'd bet on it going 7.

Agree with the premise of thread title. It should be an amazing series. Looking forward to it. Don't care who wins, just want to be entertained.
Devils may steal 1st in the Metro now with having added Meier and Carolina holding put. Only back one point with one game in hand for Carolina

And Id argue Carolina is a better matchup for NY. I think NJ's speed and high-end skill may be too much for NY 5v5

Uh.....OK, didn't even realize the Devils were that close. Your last point about speed, yeah could be.

Still would rather see NJ vs NYR, just for the rivalry aspect. But yeah, it may not happen.

Yeah the rivalry series would definitely be a favorite around the league but in the Tri-State area our hearts couldnt possibly handle it lmao

Sabres and pens play rangers 3 times each. Rangers might not be in 3rd unless devils win division and rangers are first WC.
It would take a massive collapse for the Rangers to fall into a WC place. Not happening.
