Sloppy preseason game but a few notes:

Kakko and Miller both had a lot of jump. Chytil too.

Rydahl looks like he could be a legit NHL player. He has the size and skating and he seems like he plays a NHL style, basically everything the scouting report said about him. Will be interesting to see if he can stick.

Carpenter is very blah

Vesey is fine and I’d be fine with him as a 4th liner on this team who could fill in up the lineup with injuries. I’d rather have him sliding up the lineup than Hunt honestly and I say that as a fan of Hunt.

Othmann rules and it sucks it’s either NHL or OHL for him this season. That rule sucks. Can’t wait until he’s a Ranger, he’s going to be a good player here.

Jones looked good. Hajek is still Hajek. Schneider was a little off but I’m not going to overreact to own sloppy preseason game for any of the returning players.

Kravstov looked a little nervous but I thought he was fine. Not great but not bad either. I feel like he’s the type of player who can contribute without really doing much jsut by smart subtle passes and smart positioning to open up lanes. Hopefully he hangs around bc I think he can be a solid middle 6 winger here.

Kreider WTF??

Weird that they posted this specifically

If it’s anyone else maybe you could read into it but the fact that it’s Kreider doing it you know it’s 100% him busting Kravy’s balls and they were probably joking about it right after. Shit like this happens between teammates on every team with zero significance or intent at every level, just joking. I think sometimes we forget that jsut because they’re professionals we read into things but at the end of the day they’re just hockey kids who have been hockey kids their whole lives.

Really wish we got to see more of him on the PK. The length and wheels give him a lot to work with there.

I enjoyed watching his line the most.

It was only 1 pre-season game but overall this team is primed to have another very good season and the kids are going to play a major part in that. The roster is better and deeper than the one that began last year. No Strome, Hunt, Gauthier, Nemeth. More Trocheck, Kravs, Blais, Jones. Oh and Islanders will suck once again.

I didn’t watch one second this I was too busy, enjoying my Cowboys, but this is the best GDT headline ever.

That is true, I remember Krav saying he thought it was weird that he was expected to cheer when he scored in the preseason because it doesn’t mean anything lol. He’s someone who plays much better the higher the steaks (he looked way better in the NHL than AHL, and looks way better in the KHL playoffs than regular season)
he doesnt have time for this peasant hockey...gonna have to pigeon toss whichever idiot it was that took that shot at him behind the net. not entirely sure but think it was dobson - gonna have to pay the iron price next time

- Kakko looked comfortable out there. His wrist shot that hit the post really surprised the goalie.
- jimmy vesey on the fourth line would be a smart move. Guy can play up the lineup in a pinch.
- need to give rydahl more reps. Love his motor, size and speed. If he plays like an energizer bunny who uses his body effectively, that’s an upgrade. But need to see more of him.
- Kravtsov just needs more reps right now. And he needs to just get out of his own way a bit. He seems a bit nervous and unsure of himself right now. Just not playing with swagger. So hard to judge him right now.
- Jones. Looks bigger. Looks stronger on the puck. Need him to get more reps though to see where he’s at in his own zone.
- Hajek seemed fine, but he still has areas of the ice where his lack of confidence shows up. Certainly gets skittish when it comes to pinching on certain plays. And he just doesn’t read the outlet options quickly enough some times. Mediocre possession player.
- on Schneider. Keep in mind he was playing with Jones. Jones isn’t nec going to cover up miscues as well as say Braun. Schneider is still so young and raw.
- Othman looked very solid. As did Sykora.
- it’s very important that we recognize that preseason home games are always the easier of the preseason games. Visiting teams tend to dress fewer top players. It’s easier to look good. Lias always looked great in the preseason…

I love Miller, Othmann, Sykora, and Rydahl more after tonight.

Sykora took two horrendous stick related penalties because the guy appears to have led in his skates and does not move his feet. I’d be shocked if he’s not in the first round of cuts. Not sure what you saw from him that gave you a indication he could be effective at all.

Rydahl has size and some physical attributes but he’s bound for Hartford I’d guess despite Carpenter looking terrible. Carpenter had some passes that looked just terrible and I see him as more limited but my sense is Gallant trusts him more.

I been to one before, a long time ago during the Fleury years. iirc they did fastest skater and hardest shot and maybe something else. They also had a "celebrity" and alumni game with the usual's, Boomer, Chris Jericho, I just recall one of the guys from Bare Naked Ladies was by far the best celebrity skater.
Michael J Fox and Dennis Leary played in those games. So did Bababooey.

Actually think most of the comments in this thread are pretty sound. Miller was a beast. Jones over Hajek... and yes, I wouldn't mind him taking some PP2 time from Trouba. Vesey should stick based not just on this game but prior years' performance... scoring with NYR, defending with NJD. Carpenter was a ghost and Rydahl somewhat better... but I'm not real content with either as 4C based on this one look. Kravtsov wasn't terrible, but knowing he needs to be noticeable in this camp, he failed last night. Like others are saying, likely some squeezing the stick too hard... but he better get over it fast. If he looks like this mid-November, that's it. Othmann here next year for sure. Sykora was an interesting mess, but he's only 18... a couple years down the road may be an important piece. I guess my only hot take would be a guy no one's discussed here (I missed the GDT)... Garand. Looked like every shot was a hand grenade... seemed nervous and really uncontrolled. Presumably he was really good in the WJC, which I saw none of... but while he only coughed up one last night, it looked like a better team could have massacred him.

Othmann might make the team.

If Jones isn't the 3LD this board will revolt against Turk.

Agreed, and honestly I see no reason for why to expect that Turk wouldn't play him. Could there be? Sure, I don't know, but things are really different this year compared to last. I.e. its one thing to fairly late in the season -- when the Nemeth fiasco was finnished -- bring in a young inexperienced undersized puck mover and another to do it after a full camp were you also always have the option to ease the kid in (most of the time the top 6 Ds don't play 100% of the games right out of the gates).

Schneider's play for someone his age and his potential is remarkable -- but from my POV, Jones is the most capable young D we have.

Every time I see Jones play he looks like a plus NHLer. But then they sit him or send him down and I just assume I’m missing something. I’ll really be scratching my head if he’s not in the Top Six to start the year. Or - at worst - the 7D.

Best not to make more out of the first 2,3 preseason games than they’re worth. Islanders played Barzal, Lee, Pageau, Wahlstrom, Clutterbuck, Dobson, Romanov, Mayfield and their backup Varlamov. Their lineup had real NHL’ers but was not an
NHL playoff team and was hardly what I would expect to see when the season begins.

It was a good effort on our players part but asserting anyone that isn’t a lock already should make the team off of that first game is ridiculous. The training camp roster needs to be whittled down a lot more.

One of the issues that has me thinking in the 6/7 battle for last defense spots is the ability of any of the three main contenders to switch over to the right side in case of emergency. They are all still so very young and Jones and Robertson coming off of their rookie pro reasons. It wouldn’t shock me if an RD went down Welinski came up. It also kind of means the 6/7 D are not going to be every game players. Unless there’s an injury to Miller or Lindgren when the one plays the other sits.

Same here I don’t get why he’s not an everyday player. He adds so much to this roster. Everything he does is sharp. Like I’ve been saying he’s light years better than lundkvist and was last camp too

Jones looks real good with the puck, can't deny that. He'll make some mistakes from being a bit overaggressive but you can live with that.
Last year I think it was really his game without the puck that led to him not being a regular. He was still learning how to be a small defenseman at this high level, and he's always going to have to fight against the idea that if he has to spend any amount of time defending in his own zone without the puck then things are going to go south on him quickly. Is that true or fair? Dunno, but I see that as what the real hurdle for him will be. If he can show the coaches "yeah I can play positionaly sound defensive hockey and break the puck out quickly when I get a chance" then that'll go a long ways

Geez enough with the excuses man.

He has to make the team first before he plays in those “important games” for him to start showing up. And he needs to show up in preseason to do that. He looked so disinterested at times last night. Meanwhile you have guys like Othmann and Sykora flying out there, making their presence known, and asserting themselves.

Kravtsov needs to work harder. Play harder. Get involved.

Couldn't put my finger on who Othmann resembled, but now I'm convinced it is Colbie Minnifie. Anyone who watches The Boys might agree.

Their regular season lineup isn’t an NHL playoff team either.

He knows how it works now, he outscored all our stars in 2019 and got cut. The Rangers are not a meritocracy. He will make the team regardless, he can’t be sent down without waivers. Obviously the guys who are a long shot to make the team are gonna be playing balls to the wall.

But you want my honest analysis of his game? First of all people are mostly just trolling me, he played okay. (People have admitted to this, even Uninstaaled who loves to troll me more than anybody lol)

I think he was nervous about the reception he’d get at MSG and was almost expecting to get booed or something. He was gripping his stick too tight as you saw when he got that break and passed it to the goalie. He was also trying to get into the good graces too much, he was passing too much even when the better option is to shoot. Saw this when they had that zone entry where the puck carrier passed it to Krav and Krav one touched it back to him. And on the powerplay when Krav forced 2 passes that got deflected off skates instead of shooting. He didn’t want to seem selfish, was trying too hard to get in the good graces I think. But this isn’t his game and I’m not concerned at all. He’s got that idgaf Kovalev attitude which he will return to.

Almost the whole game his line was paired with the Hajek pairing who screwed up over and over. I defend Hajek because I think he’s overhated due to the McDonagh trade but he was a trainwreck last night.

I didn’t think the Vesey-Chytil-Krav line was very good even though some say they were our best line, Vesey and Chytil are both puck hogs and didn’t allow Krav to get enough touches. Vesey is working his ass off to try and save his NHL career on a PTO, there was one play where Krav was open in the slot and Vesey instead tried shooting from an impossible angle. Chytil is always horse blinders on and not a good distributor.

Krav did block a shot and lead a rush immediately after, poked away a few pucks from Isles players wi th his long reach including one that was right in the slot by our net. Made a crazy backhand no look chip pass to Chytil while being hit along the boards that sent Chytil in for a great chance when he got hooked.

Not a terrible first game, but for Krav standards not good enough. I expect a very different Krav going forward.

I also don’t think these lines are permanent, if you watch the Gallant interviews he said these are not the real lines and that he already has his idea of the real lines (which I’m guessing are what we saw in camp). I think Krav will be with Panarin, and that will unlock his greatness
