I really only care about how Hayes, Castillo, Contreras and Reynolds do on this team, because the rest of the team is clearly awful. I'm mostly focused on the young guys and guys who should be the cornerstones going forward.

I'm also fully over the Tucker experiment at this point. Dude can't play defense in the outfield and can't hit at all.

Castillo finally gets the nod.

Stating the obvious, but it's pretty hard to be enthused about any kind of lineup configuration. I think Vogelbach will get going, but even though I get the OBP logic, I don't like him leading off. Who knows if Allen would have hit the ground running, but we need a little chaos on the basepaths.

The lineup would be a lot more appealing to be excited about if we had Cruz with the team and Castillo playing every day. Hopefully at least Hayes might be able to run with a leadoff role, and we can try out something different going forward. I'm sure Shelton is going to run out a ton of different lineups.

For what it's worth, though he has had some Ks in the early going, Cruz looks totally locked in at the plate in AAA to me -- he is barely getting much to work with, but he's working counts and not biting on bad pitches or pitches he can't do much with. Two of his Ks were borderline strike three calls, and I think overall he is really not swinging and missing much, which together with not being too aggressive, is what you want to see out of Cruz, though it's not like anyone really thinks he needs much work on offense (though again for what it's worth, I'm more tuned in to see that, since I just don't see what the difference is with defense besides getting reps).

I said to myself I felt an Arenado dinger coming after Carlson, Goldy, and O'Neil all made solid contact on fastballs right down the middle.

This team is an embarassment to the sport.

Wilson is horrendous, his stuff is way too weak to be throwing it at the fat part of the plate. A guy with a 92-93 MPH fastball is going to get shredded with that location.

The MLB team is unwatchable. It would have been nice if the GM did something to rectify that over the winter.

Well that was a quick 180

Like I posted yesterday, I really only care about how Reynolds and Hayes are doing. This team is going to suck because of the horrid pitching, but as long as Reynolds and Hayes do well, I can't really complain.

Nice to have something to smile about. Let's hope we can hold the lead for a couple innings at least.

Cruz continues to look absolutely locked in at the plate in AAA. I'm also more and more impressed with Smith-Njigba, I think he's at least a very useful platoon guy, and I've been high on Mitchell in the same way.

I don't follow the details of baseball too much, usually have it on as background noise, but how do the Pirates have horrible pitching? I feel like they've drafted pitchers in the first round for 30 years now.

For all the shit I talk on Newman, have to hand it to him on that play at short. That was insane.

Hayes is going to end up hitting his offensive upside literally right after signing his contract

I legit think he's going to have about an .820-.840 OPS this year.

I'm actually happy they're giving Cruz some reps in the OF, because I think they're more likely to play him in LF over guys like Alford or Gamel than they are to play him at SS over Newman.

Once Cruz gets up to the big league, I actually don't think their offense will be that big of an issue. I've liked Perez and Tsutsugo a lot so far this year and Hayes seems to be coming around with his bat this year. It's going to be their pitching that will be the death of them.

Yeah, the pitching definitely seems like it's going to be best case scenario 3-4 runs on a lot of days, which is a high bar for the offense. I'm liking those guys too, and I think Vogelbach will also heat up some.

Honestly, I really hope we keep rolling with Hayes as the leadoff hitter. I get the thinking with Vogelbach seeing a lot of pitches, but we need speed up there. Ideally, Castillo has forced the issue somewhat and will keep getting starts, and having him higher in the order is better in terms of getting him to see better pitches. I would hate to see this:

3B Hayes
CF Reynolds
2B Castillo
1B Tsutsugo
DH Vogelbach
RF Gamel
C Perez
LF Marisnik
SS Newman

There's going to be a lot of mix and match and moving guys around, but I'd just ride the hot bat with Castillo and slot him in between Reynolds and Tsutsugo.
