It is 100% pure PR nonsense. Like who cares how many years of arbitration you buy out.
Exactly. If you aren't buying out FA years, what's the point? You're just spending money that you would have had to spend next year anyway, but now you get to say "Look, fans, we signed Reynolds to a multi-year deal!!!1" and avoid having the same embarrassment next year.

If it makes Reynolds feel better, neat, but it doesn't mean shit to me until it manifests into a real extension that buys out FA years.

Reynolds isn’t giving up free agency years. Taking care of his arbitration means he is cost controlled for 2 or 3 years easier to budget.

Prospect Watch!

Cal Mitchell dinger, his 2nd of the campaign already. Another guy who was left off the 40 man (i think) and has always been a bit under the radar. He had a real solid campaign last year.

Plus my son caught his first ever foul ball at a AA game off the bat of Mitchell. Following him a little more closely haha.

I have believed for a couple of years now this guy is an MLB starter if he can develop that 25hr power many believe in. He has a lot of average tools for sure though.

I actually kind of like the Apple TV feed
Yeah, I wasn't really paying attention to any of the announcers (I had the game on mute while watching the new Tony Hawk documentary) but I thought the experience of Apple TV was a surprise.

BTW, for those who didn't see, you don't need to have a subscription to watch any of the Friday games on Apple. I think there are two Pirates games total.

I am a pretty big backer of Mitchell, though I think I've come around to the idea that Smith-Njigba is a little bit better. Both seem to profile as having a chance to be platoon corner guys at least, and maybe regulars. Swaggerty has started to look better at the plate in short order, and I'm excited to see what this crew can do.

We really should work Roansy into the rotation, and I hope if we do, he just makes it obvious that he's one of the five best. I could see us using some kind of 6-man rotation with a bulk guy or two and then make up some excuse to send him back when rosters decrease. To me, he's even more obvious a case of a guy who should throw MLB innings this year. His stuff is ready for the challenge. I'm sure he can work on a handful of things in AAA, but I see it as wasting his innings/opportunity.

Nice, although it's not really a huge difference, we actually front-loaded the contract and made use of the low payroll this year (and probably next) to keep the per year number down in future years.

Hayes will beat 7-8M annually even if he's a bottom third of the order hitter.

They aren’t going to add roansy to the rotation lol. He is the only current healthy pitcher on the 40 man that’s whose not here already that’s why he was called up. He will be back in Indy may 1st when rosters go down.
I hope after the Kendall deal Hayes isn’t Eric Chavez because the pirates will never do another long term contract if he is. This is the most guaranteed money given to any player who has such little service time.
Any chance you extend Reynolds is if he takes the springer 6-150 and you give him 20 million for his 3 arbitration years 9-170 which averages out to under 19 million a year

It is definitely in part just a safety move with Contreras since there are no other immediate options. What I don't like about it is that there's a viable argument that he could be used out of the bullpen for a good part of the season anyways for health reasons, since he didn't throw a ton of innings last year, but he was slated to be starting in AAA.

Obviously, a big reason he didn't make the team is that we want to gain a year of control with him, and I imagine we're even more likely to try and navigate around Super Two in his case. As much as I think the whole manipulation is a crock of BS that can't be defended (it simply cannot be legislated away; the only solution is teams behaving like they should in order to have a winning culture), I think gaining the extra year makes sense, though not necessarily keeping him in AAA until mid-June.

I imagine he'll be here for the minimum number of days until we can add somebody else to the 40-man to pitch in mid-relief, and then we won't see him until he's comfortably post-Super Two.

Okay that Hayes extension is 1000% a 9 year deal. There is no chance they opt out with a $6 million buyout and Hayes only costing $12 million in his option year.

My dude Samson was talking about service Manipulation and how the league and the owners are showing everyone that they are willing to play a shell game now. He was talking about what’s the difference if we call up a guy and then in a month send him down to work on things. Since you know that you need 21 days roughly in the minors to not get a year of time. So it looks good coming out of the cba negotiations but watch and see if Witt or Rodriguez go down if kc or Seattle start slow. The players settled for scraps when he came to manipulation

I am so surprised they front-loaded it. That's the kinda thing Sawyer & Cherington would want to do - the Nutting's not so much.

I'm somewhat encouraged by this small step/sign. Look what MLB & the Nuttings have done to us....

Yeah, the announcers were a little too chatty for my preference, but I really liked the look and feel of the broadcast. The stats and probabilities were pretty cool to me. How was the Tony Hawk documentary?

I thought it was great -- pretty long, but held my attention throughout. I didn't really know all that much about the history of skateboarding in the 70s and early 80s. I'd definitely recommend it.

Feels like a big inning for Keller here. Didn't get some bounces in the 1st but limited damages and kept executing, and was able to get swinging strikes which has never been the case in previous seasons. We'll see if he can keep it up.

Watch Hayes have like a .850 OPS this year and instantly have one of the best contracts in baseball

Keller's not having the velocity that he had in the pre-season, but I think him sitting at 96-98 will still definitely be good enough.

I don't want to make a meal out of Keller having a bad outing in a series the team is clearly playing horribly in as a whole. But it was not encouraging.

Yeah, the team looks horrible. It's inexcusable to have VanMeter in the lineup over Castillo, full stop. Mikolas was garbage and we had a bunch of good ABs vs him but couldn't make him pay.

Keller needs to produce better results, but the one thing that's noticeably different about him is the awkward swings and whiffs.

Keller still doesn’t have an out pitch but this probably the best line up in the division. It’s pretty obvious Contreras isn’t ready yet. Can we dump Vogelvack and play Castillo every day
