I think we are all underestimating the pressure Byfield experienced to defer to the veterans on his line. How many times did you shout at 55 on tv or live SHOOT!!!
Whether this deferring tendency was pressure from inside him or outside we will never know. I do know great talents are encouraged to be "selfish" so they use their talents. For whatever reason the Kings have a culture that squelches this tendency. Very frustrating.
No doubt 55's and 34's development havr suffered as a result.
This is the frustrating "process" Raccoon refers to.
This is my worry, they seem to lost an assertive edge… focused on playing right, rather than just playing. They both need the shackles removing IMO.

In that Rosen article I was a bit surprised to read the stuff about Turcotte not being particularly liked by teammates. He's always been promoted as a high character guy.

One could wonder how much further QB woiuld be, without the ankle break and the illness this past season. I watched his exit interview and when asked what it was, he just said "I had a fever and no appetite and stayed in bed and lost 25 pounds" (not verbatim) wow. He was already under weight and should be at 225. I think he was 220 and if he went down to 195, that's not big enough to be 6'5" 195 and play again in Sudbury! I alwasy thought of the ankle break as being the more significant injury, but the illness was just as bad. The ankle, at least he could work out (with Drew) and stay in physical condition. Losing 25 lbs and trying to gain that back and strength was a major blow.
I am sure he never got back to 220...maybe close.

He then went to the AHL and scored 9 goals in 16 games. How? One reason, he didn't have the mindset "I need to get the puck and get it to Kopi and Kempe" was a part of that. 9 goals in 16 AHL games is good, for a 20 yr old, coming off an illness and probably at 205-210 lbs.

Consider when he began playing LW, he was making passes and plays at a high level. He also began playing physcial and while learing wing...and still probably not at full weight and strength until the end of the year. He knows he must score more. He knows he's got to put on more muscle and be at 225. The fact he was working with Hiller, Kempe and then Danault...he probably learned some things and I expect him to work on his shot thios Summer and add strength.

I'm encouraged, in that he took steps, learned wing, played at high tempo with Kopitar and Kempe,
while truly having another setback...and he's 20. I'm not worried at all about him.
He would be farther along, without the 2 injuries (illness)

I'm hoping he can be 3C and get to 15-18 goals and even 40 asssits, if he plays with Vilardi and Fiala - with considerable PP time.

Some of the comments on Byfield are such extremes. I wonder if that's simply due to frustrations...or maybe meant as hyperbole. IDK. Just odd.
Sure the dude has not scored enough -- he's been a bit of a disappointment to this point compared to his draft position and compared to "that other guy". But to write him off or to not acknowledge that he hasn't progressed -- seems like an effort of trying to be right or maybe just feed up with the (justified) crap show with FO on prospects & their development.
Yeah it's been a slow burn. But this year was a big improvement over last year. the arch is going up. Not as fast as many would want (lot of Veruca Salt's when it comes to prospects) and certainly not with the goal scoring. But he's trending up and that's a good sign for a 20 year old with his size & potential.
Some people love to say “Byfield’s a bust” on infinite repeat just like some people love to say “the kings have no toughness” on infinite repeat. It’s hockey Tourette syndrome.

Damn, I need to get pneumonia.

It was wild, honestly. I was working logistics setting up camps for oil workers in Northern Alberta at the time I caught it. We get free food in these camps and some of the food had pretty high quality. Everyday had a different theme for food. For instance, Tuesday was New York Steak night and it was all you could eat.

There was a full regular buffet to go along with it. An ice cream machine like McDonalds but actually worked. You could easily gain 20-30 lbs from the food at those camps.

So when I caught Pneumonia I just had no appetite. Even when trying to get something like Calamari (which I normally love) here I was just staring at this bowl and not being able to take more than 2-3 bites. My skin was so pale that nobody would sit near me. I coughed like Smeagol.

Still worked for two weeks. Was sent home from the office but they commended how I looked like a ghost but kept trying to work. When I stepped on the scale when I got home (some people commented how frail I was looking by the end) I was ~178. My normal range was ~210.

Good times.

Ranger fan here bored with the off-season already. How low are you guys on QB at this point? Is he projecting as a winger or is the plan to shift him to C?

Also curious, what would the general consensus be on a potential Lafreniere for Byfield straight up swap?

QB for Laf straight up would seem like a perfect trade if the Kings weren't so strong on the wing or if say Turcotte had lived up to his draft spot and was looking like a future 1C. But the Kings just have nothing at C beyond two guys with a 3 instead of a 2 in front of their ages.

Both these guys could use a change of scenery, as both just look like they have zero confidence. But I'd still lean towards both just not being as good as everyone thought coming into that draft. Probably a couple of 2nd line players down the road.

Yeah, I’m not too familiar with how your positions project over the next several years. Your system always seems strong at C so I assumed you might be interested in a “natural” winger.

The Rangers have decent C depth on the big club but many feel like Chytil may be better slotted at wing because he’s so bad in the dot.

And yes, a change of scenery is what I had in mind. Fresh starts.

I lost 40lbs in 2 weeks due to chemo… if you are looking for recommendations…. 6’4 168lbs (edit: not 148 - I’d have been dead :naughty:). I looked like skeletor. I could eat anything I wanted for months without putting weight on. It was awesome

I always had QB ahead of Laf as I felt his upside was more limited, still do. We are a long way from Byfield’s ceiling but he needs handling better, with more trust and responsibility given to him.

Rapid weight lost usually means a significant strength lost too, unless your obese and the weight lost actually improves your health.

Laf looks like a fully grown, fully developed, man child.

Byfield looks like a newly born baby deer.

I'll stick with the guy who looks like he has a lot of development room in front of him.

Turcotte:

Upon arriving at Wisconsin, he didn’t endear himself to the more senior Badgers when he was slow to return from a second half lower-body injury while the team struggled in Big Ten play and those around him were aware he intended to turn pro at the end of the season. Perhaps it’s simply a reflection of not quite fitting in with an insular and often obtuse hockey culture, but teammates in the L.A. organization and Eisbären Berlin, with whom he trained early in the 2020-21 season, were not quick to warm to him.

That’s the key bit - it doesn’t make him a bad character.
