Oh, are we back on the old "QB can't score in the zone" stuff?

Did we miss that entire AHL highlight reel when 75% of the goals were rolling off a guy off the boards or in front or are we just back to making shit up that makes us feel better

The thing is, in the NHL, Byfield's lone point came off the rush.

With Brown and AA, there is no structured cycle. His time with them in the offensive zone is him literally chasing the puck.

It's just more evidence of why he needs better linemates, in my opinion. Their lack of chemistry and structure is causing the line to operate with the efficacy of a 4-on-5 penalty kill.

QB is an off-the-rush player. Meaning, he doesn't rely on digging pucks out in the neutral zone or defensive zone. He relies on his speed to get through the neutral zone and to be a threat in the offensive zone. He relies on his linemates as he is a playmaker in the purest sense of the word. He needs to have, as linemates, players with high hockey IQs so that they can get open. Guys that can bury the puck and have a nose for the net. I wish Kempe and Iafallo could play on his line to see how that works. He's being misused.

Byfield- Still very raw, certainly leaps and bounds behind Kopitar at the same age. Some difficulties in development not his fault, including injury and C-19 limits. Probably a 50-60 pt player at some point, but a lot of criticisms scouts had about his play prior to the draft have been evident in his limited pro career so far. Kings are shooting for the moon, hoping that raw talent and size will come to pass and become that 1C they hope he will be. Time will tell.
What were those criticisms scouts had in his draft year?

Edit: nevermind, somebody answered this already

Putting it in here too cus it seemed relevant and I asked about it just for you guys.

Don't say I never do nothin' for ya.

When I heard Todd say this quote I knew it meant something. I'm learning to read Todd Signals and he's VERY GOOD at saying exactly what he wants to by NOT SAYING the thing directly.

I asked him a super vague rambling question that went on WAY too long and he instantly gave me an answer that I heard as "look we get it. That line isn't good. We're not going to put up with it forever."

I had no idea he meant the lineup would be changed by the next game.

WE spoke to Yawney after the game and I asked if the decision to swap 22 for 91 was decided before Todd was added to protocol and he said yes.

So... I dunno the point of all this other than I'm excited that I was right and I feel like I've got a solid handle on interpreting the messaging now.

Jesus what a win.

OK, I'm really concerned about you all getting your story straight.

What are you talking about? I provided more specific context to what the criticism was.

Edit: also, I don't even agree with it. But there was a HUGE discussion on these boards where a youtube account who ranked prospects said "he can only score off the rush." Then the hivemind clinged to it.

6’5, 220 pound center that is playing in the NHL after missing crucial development time with a nasty ankle break, a shortened Covid season and Covid himself hasn’t quite found his game in a playoff race with crappy line mates.

We better label this guy a bust. Let’s revisit this pick 2 years from now. I love the opposition’s fans telling me he is a dud by looking at score sheets.

oh I forgot to mention the dude just turned 19. Frig at that age I was playing Campus Rec hockey and my biggest worry was if the hot girl in one of my classes noticed if I was alive and wether my student loans would cover both texts books or beer or if I would have to pick 1 over the other.

Think Kopitar. Throws the occasional hit but it's more of a big body/possession game. He's already learning to shield the puck and use his size to his advantage. He's not like a Malkin or anything like that. His speed is going to cause problems because he's going to be difficult for other defensemen to slow him down just because of F=ma.

It's not unusual for dominant players at lower levels to get a lot of their points on the rush, its an easier way to maximize their huge skill advantage over the other players, especially in the CHL. In the NCAA it's a bit different because most of the blue chip prospects are 18 and 19 and many of the players are older and bigger. I remember seeing Jason Spezza and Kyle Wellwood play a few times in the OHL back in the day and they weren't playing a very structured game, it made no sense to when they could dominate on the rush. People often forget these junior and college teams are trying to win too, not just develop players for the NHL.

NHL teams who are good at developing are able to round their skills into a more NHL game.

Saying QB only gets his chances off the rush is not accurate. The QB I have seen is a puck hound. He has an active stick. He peruses the puck into the corners and wins battles behind the net and takes it to the front. He makes great stops and starts/cutbacks. I see a very creative kid with good vision that sends pucks to players that just aren't expecting the puck to get there. Dude is a stud.

Byfield had some great shifts in the second period of game 52 at Anaheim. 5 min in and 15 min in were the two that really jumped out. Physical on the puck, great possession on the boards.

I've lost track of where I've said it and how many times I've said it so I'll just put it in here...

Quinton Byfield is about to go on a heater.

That breakaway would have been nice, puck rolled on him last second.

I hope he does. Kings are basically in the playoffs now all things considered. Conference is so close together.

Pretty sure it was on Twitter, haha...but I was thinking the exact same thing around the time you posted it. The boiling confidence is basically exactly how he looked before he suddenly started cartooning the AHL.

Love seeing Grundstrom fit in seamlessly on QBs wing. Its refreshing that they are teaming up for greasy goals that result from hard work and some earned luck. That’s better than a fluke breakaway goal once every 10 games by AA.

Grundstrom actually works hard away from the puck and in pursuit of the puck. His physicality allows him to win puck battles and to keep the puck possession in the cycle. AA does none of that. It's why a rebuilding team gets rid of him less than a year after a 30-goal season. And why nobody else wanted him as a free agent. I guess the Kings thought that they could fix him and round out his game. Nope.

I agree. The dude is an a 40 goal pace the last couple games. Yes I say that tongue in cheek.

In all reality he was super raw when drafted. It took him 20 games in the AHL to heat up and he will get to the same point in the NHL.

Kid has all the tools and a willingness to learn
