The waive of talent drops off around 15-20 range and there is lots of talk of the late 1st's being 2nd round values in this draft (when you compare to normal drafts). And 2nd rounders are more like your normal 3rd rounder. Bob M spoke to that in his mid season rankings. If you are going to trust anybody with that, I'd trust Bob.
If this is true, I rather extend Evans than trade him for a pick that has a chance to be an Evans in 3+ years (at best). The other approach with the Devils would be to get in a deeper trade. Evans comes as a sign/trade (lets say 4x or 5x $3.5M) and the Habs add the Flames 1st on top (probably 14-18 range). That's around where Bob said the next waive of talent drops. Of course, I'm targeting Nemec as the return. Probably willing to add a prospect on top as well (one of Beck or Mailloux). However, if Evans is available in a sign/trade, that is not a rental so if we add a pick from 14-18 range, that is very good value. Devils get a piece they need now (with term and a value contract) and they get a 1st in the back of that 2nd waive of talent in this draft.
Call me crazy but I decline a late 1st for Evans at this TDL. That's a typical 2nd from the normal drafts. It will take fans a bit to catch up but I can see a lot of late 1st and 2nd rounders offered at this TDL.
My trade offer is...
* Evans with extension (5x $3.5M)
* Flames 1st (14-18 range)
* Possible prospect added (one of Beck or Mailloux... Depending on what other teams offer us for Evans)
for
* Nemec
* 1 or 2 year cap dump.
I believe this is a workable trade for the Habs and Devils. Habs may be reaching with the prospect on top of Evans and the pick but the Devils don't really want to trade Nemec either.
