Quinn Hughes Mega thread: Top in points, Norris consideration, MVP and Canucks fans hearts

These are fun.

No one said that Makar is significantly injured, nor that he’s the best player in the league at offense and defense, nor that defensive hits are unique to him. Good lord.

Someone is just coping that despite Hughes having a phenomenal year, the odds for the Norris indicate that it is indeed a very close race between the two, with Hughes having a slight edge as of right now.

Makar missed all of training camp and a few games this year due to a nagging injury and he’s still neck and neck with Hughes. This isn’t an opinion, it’s facts.

I think the majority of us understand it’s a 1A vs 1B situation right now. There are some weird delusions out there that Makar is in another class and despite the evidence it persists. Canucks fans understand that it could go either way and that’s fine. If love to get the Canucks a Norris but 2nd to another legend is quite fine.

He's also said that Girard is just as good as Hughes. If not better because he doesn't get PP time .

I guess I’m seeing it differently than you are because all I see are Nucks fans trying to convince people that Hughes is winning the Norris in a landslide when in reality it’s the closest of all award races right now going by the odds.

I agree with you that this year it’s a 1A 1B situation. For their careers however, Makar is most definitely in another class.

Nope. Better so far. But not in another class.
That’s hyperbole.

I wasn't prepared for the superstore dad joke either, I thought you were gonna be one of those Albertans that want to seperate from the country lol

Are they? Most people are saying Hughes is winning but not by a landslide. I've even seen other Avs fans admit that Hughes is slightly ahead right now.

Careers? Eh, Hughes finally gets to play on a strong team and he proves to be about the same quality. Look at the numbers from his rookie year, over PPG in the playoffs. Makar wins ROTY deservedly but keep in mind he's a year older. Then Hughes' team gets gutted, Makar's team goes the other direction and definitely went off. Admittedly that had him way in front and I don't think many of us saw Hughes catching up. But last year? Pretty well even if you really watched the games, but Makar has the goal scoring and the playoffs. This year, pretty well even, but Hughes getting a nudge for being captain of the current best team in the league while driving play and possession to an insane extent.

I'll give you guys that Makar is PKing and whatnot but...don't the constant injuries kind of speak to the problem with that? If those stats gave Makar the norris then sure take it, I'd rather have him preserved for tilting the ice 5 on 5. If you've got a generational D-man and you do, I would be looking down the line and saying I don't want that guy taking shots to the ankle all day, potentially shortening his career. Hughes is a fine Pker but I'd rather someone else do it so he can do what he's best at.

Yeah therein lies the problem. Canuck fans don’t give Makar proper credit for what he’s already accomplished and it’s a shame because if Hughes ever accomplishes what Makar already has, I’d hope Avs fans would give him the credit he’d rightfully deserve.

Makar has won the Calder, has won a Norris(3x finalist), and has the 4th most prolific playoff run for a defenseman in NHL history which resulted in a Conn Smythe along with the Stanley Cup. He’s over a PPG for his career in the regular season and playoffs.

Also, you know that +/- stat that Canucks fans love to use for Hughes’ Norris case this year? Well Makar is +104 in 281GP. So if you use that stat to show how impressive Quinn has been this year, you also have to recognize that Makar doing it his whole career is not just a byproduct of him playing on good teams.

Lastly, I never said that Hughes can’t join the class that Makar’s put himself in, just that to this point in his career, Cale has clearly created a separate tier for himself. That can always change and this year is a great step in Quinn doing that.

Want us to mention how great Makar is every time we talk about Hughes? I'll start, Makar played a huge part in the 2018 Canadian World Junior team winning a gold medal.

Av fans shat all over Hughes for years. Don't act like its a 1 way street about giving credit.

One plays on one of the best teams in the NHL for their career while one have been playing for a basement team. I'm sure that has a bit to do with their success's .

As far as I'm concerned Makar is not in a different tier. Not even close.

I’m simply talking about giving him credit whenever the discussion merits it. Like when we compare their careers.

I was only pointing out NHL accomplishments but putting up 8pts in 7 games as Canada’s 7th defenseman on the gold medal winning team is certainly impressive. Don’t forget the Hobey Baker as well.

Yeah you’ll always get some bad fans who are blindly loyal and discredit other teams players which is unfortunate.

Your 2nd point is a little disingenuous because you’re discrediting what Makar’s done by way of him playing on good teams yet you want Hughes to get that same recognition now.

On your last point, you failed to provide any sort of evidence to disprove the fact that Makar is on his own tier or even why Hughes belongs there with him but everyone has the right to their own opinion. I strongly disagree.

Good luck to Quinn in the Norris race, he’s been my favourite player to watch this season outside the Avalanche. Hell of a player.

Also keep in mind it was the closest 2 horse race post lockout at the time, maybe still.

Makar "only" getting 60% of the votes was almost unheard of, most other 2 horse race Calder trophys are wins by 90% margins.

I think Hughes is better, but I wouldn’t mind either of these guys.
