Whats funny is canucks fans using stats like HDF% or FF% for hughes but at the same time claiming those stats have no meaning for their team as a whole.
That’s the thing, he’s clearly not at the top of his game. His explosion is still not like it was in his previous seasons, that’s the scary part!It illustrates how far you are trying to stretch your insanely dumb narrative. Numbers seem to suggest the Makar has been better on special teams, while Hughes has been better 5on5.
All players play through being hurt, including Hughes. There is simply no way Makar has been playing through anything of significance while still being at the top of his game - that's just common sense. Both players are awesome, and Hughes has caught up. Learn to accept it and live with it.
Or maybe the team has other options for the PK? Instead of running your top D into the ground killing penalties, why not save his energy to generate offense and play 5 on 5?You're not a complete defenseman if you're not even relied upon to kill penalties.

They are not and that was a big reason why Makar won the Norris over Josi that year. Because he didn't kill penalties.Or maybe the team has other options for the PK? Instead of running your top D into the ground killing penalties, why not save his energy to generate offense and play 5 on 5?
I guess Josi and Morrissey is also not a "complete defenseman"?

Way too early to say that. If Makar stays healthy he'll pass Hughes in points while logging major PK minutes.Hughes is having the better season, and will win the Norris. That’s ok to say as an Avs fan.
We’ll see what happens next year.
Sure, doesn't matter what we think. The canadian media has already churned out the Hughes narrativeWay too early to say that. If Makar stays healthy he'll pass Hughes in points while logging major PK minutes.
My bet is on Makar right now, but still lots of games to play.Hughes is having the better season, and will win the Norris. That’s ok to say as an Avs fan.

He's on pace for career high numbers, challenging for the Norris again, yet is not on top of his game. Bullshit. That’s the thing, he’s clearly not at the top of his game. His explosion is still not like it was in his previous seasons, that’s the scary part!
When he’s healthy, there’s no better defenseman on the planet than Makar.
He's on pace for career high numbers, challenging for the Norris again, yet is not on top of his game. Bullshit.
He’s still putting up numbers. But anyone who’s watched Makar over the years would tell you he’s been playing at 80-90% all year. Mostly reflective on the defensive end. He's on pace for career high numbers, challenging for the Norris again, yet is not on top of his game. Bullshit.
Still think girard and Byram are superior to Hughes?Whats funny is canucks fans using stats like HDF% or FF% for hughes but at the same time claiming those stats have no meaning for their team as a whole.
i disagree.Makar has been hurt all year and has missed 5 more games that Hughes, but he is still only 2 points away from him.
That’s not even mentioning that Makar leads Hughes in virtually all the major defensive categories like hits (21 vs. 16), blocks (81 vs. 35), takeaways (41 vs. 25), and SH TOI per game (3:00 vs. 0:48) and has a higher defensive zone start percentage (40.7% vs. 35.1%).
Also, +/- is pretty much worthless. Hughes was -10 and -24 in his first two full seasons. Would you say he was a horrible player back then?
With so many games left and him starting to get healthy, it’s Makar AINEC. Hughes is a great player, but there’s levels to this.

I mean, if you have a guy like Tyler Myers who can stand in the way, why waste, or risk, Quinn getting hit by pucks? SH TOI is dumb to use as any sort of measurement of defensive qualities. Some players are just better utilized in other situations. Cale is 95th in the league in 5v5 ATOI, you're saying he can't be as relied on while being the same number of players? More of a special teams specialist, ey?
SH is way harder to play than 5v5 and way less likely to score points.
And Hughes is inevitable too.I mean, anyone arguing that it’s “not even close” either way are delusional. This will come down to the final 10 games of the season.
One thing that’s funny though is Nucks fans telling Avs fans that Makar is fully healthy because there’s no way he could be pacing Hughes in a career year while playing hurt. Run from it, hide from it, there’s no avoiding it, Makar is inevitable.
Might need to revisit some older threads then. Seems the tune has changed.Girard was never superior to hughes. He plays similar to hughes and this will be a concern in the playoffs. Thankfully hes like our 4/5th most important Dman. Byram is having a very bad regular season and not meeting expectations. Hughes is playing way better at the moment. But again, regular season without the heavy forechecking that we will see in the playoffs. Highly unlikely the canucks make it as far as the Avs.
