I mean, if you have a guy like Tyler Myers who can stand in the way, why waste, or risk, Quinn getting hit by pucks? SH TOI is dumb to use as any sort of measurement of defensive qualities. Some players are just better utilized in other situations. Cale is 95th in the league in 5v5 ATOI, you're saying he can't be as relied on while being the same number of players? More of a special teams specialist, ey?
You would think watching a team that regularly has a bad PK%, with their "good" seasons having them finish middle of the pack, would lead you to think that maybe there is more to PKing that just standing in the way.

The reason Makar PKs and why Hughes should, is because they are fast in the zone and have good hands and the ability to move the puck. I would rather the puck be picked up off the boards and sent down the ice than watch a player like Myers have to "stand in the way" because they have an extremely difficult time clearing the puck.

Hughes had an injury scare last night. Thought for a minute he broke his collar bone.

He has been an absolute monster in the back end.

If the Canucks win the Presidents Trophy and or the Division then there's no way you can deny Hughes the Norris and you gotta believe he would be in the top 3 for Hart.
Keep that same energy for Makar if that’s the case with the Avs

No, it's not. There's a reason why there are so many 4th liners and 3rd pairing guys being excellent at PKing.

Because they are specialists at PKing and cant score at 5v5. The fact that makar can spend so much more time PKing and still put up better ppg than hughes speaks volumes.

Lot of PK talk when Makar’s GAR and xGAR on the PK has been below average his career. Hughes has better numbers on the PK this year despite a worse PK team. I’m not sure why PK time matters all that much if Makar isn’t that great at it

He's on pace for career high numbers, challenging for the Norris again, yet is not on top of his game. Bullshit.
I don't see how that's any different to what we've been saying about Petey for much of the year. He's been putting up career numbers, yet for large stretches anyone who knows his game could tell something was off.

Yup. Hughes having an outstanding year so far combined with half a season of team success obviously has changed the tune against byram.
You most definitely had Girard and Byram as equal to or better than Hughes at different points. Which for me takes away any and all credibility you may have had.

Lol using takeaways and hits to argue defensive ability
Don’t takeaways describe how often you take the puck away when you are on defense?

Surely if you know that you have a receipt?

The difference is that no Canuck fans are pushing the "he's still league MVP-worthy, even when he is hurt and not playing up to his potential". They admit he wasn't playing great while still picking up points. Makar is apparently the best player in the league at offense and defense, making the unique-to-him defensive hits, all while significantly injured. Bullshit.

No one said that Makar is significantly injured, nor that he’s the best player in the league at offense and defense, nor that defensive hits are unique to him. Good lord.

Someone is just coping that despite Hughes having a phenomenal year, the odds for the Norris indicate that it is indeed a very close race between the two, with Hughes having a slight edge as of right now.

Makar missed all of training camp and a few games this year due to a nagging injury and he’s still neck and neck with Hughes. This isn’t an opinion, it’s facts.

Fans needs to stop squabbling who has the better defenceman and join in celebrating the fact they have the undisputed two best defenceman in the league.

Makar IS better, but Hughes is 2nd and that’s not a bad thing

It’s like McDavid and MacKinnon. Yes McDavid is better but MacKinnon really isn’t that far behind him and is the consensus #2

I think Hughes and Makar are both exceptional players and all this bickering is splitting hairs. Enjoy what they both bring to the game and the fight for the Norris. There is still lots of hockey to be played and we shall see what happens at the end. Right now Hughes has a slight lead. Enjoy what both bring to the game unless you are a forward trying to cover them lol.
