Yeah therein lies the problem. Canuck fans don’t give Makar proper credit for what he’s already accomplished and it’s a shame because if Hughes ever accomplishes what Makar already has, I’d hope Avs fans would give him the credit he’d rightfully deserve.

Makar has won the Calder, has won a Norris(3x finalist), and has the 4th most prolific playoff run for a defenseman in NHL history which resulted in a Conn Smythe along with the Stanley Cup. He’s over a PPG for his career in the regular season and playoffs.

Also, you know that +/- stat that Canucks fans love to use for Hughes’ Norris case this year? Well Makar is +104 in 281GP. So if you use that stat to show how impressive Quinn has been this year, you also have to recognize that Makar doing it his whole career is not just a byproduct of him playing on good teams.

Lastly, I never said that Hughes can’t join the class that Makar’s put himself in, just that to this point in his career, Cale has clearly created a separate tier for himself. That can always change and this year is a great step in Quinn doing that.
That’s a lot more hyperbole.
As you should know with MacKinnon different players don’t reach their high level as quickly as others. I could push stats showing Mack isn’t as good as some other players because it took him a few years to become an elite player. But that would not be a fair or accurate statement. Draisaitl has a Hart, Lindsay and an Art Ross. Is he on a different level than MacKinnon? Matthews has a Calder, two Rockets on his way to a third and a Hart and Lindsay. Is he on another level from Mack? I’d say the answer is no.
Hughes was drafted a year later and has no doubt taken longer than Makar to get to that elite level. But they are both there now. Neither is in a different class or tier than the other. I think most would give Makar an edge but that’s about it. And frankly I doubt that many Avalanche fans will ever give Hughes his due no matter what he accomplishes. As you can see if you look through this Hughes thread it’s dominated by Avalanche fans pushing Makar.
I love watching skilled players. Makar and Hughes are two of the best I’ve seen in a long time. There are no different tiers with these two guys.

Cale Makar is the only defender in the league I’d take ahead of Quinn.

If Buffalo gets its shit together and Dahlin takes another step look out. Noah Dobson keeps improving in NYI and there is a real special group of 5 and i’d throw Miro Heiskanen in there. All are 23-25. But right now I take Makar out of the 5. Hughes might get the Norris this year though. I hope so as a Canucks fan. I’d be shocked if there aren’t at least a half dozen Norris trophies among the group down the road.

Jesus the Flyers pissed their pants at the 2017 draft though.

If Hughes is second to Makar, I don't care at all. Quinn is fantastic to watch play the game and I don't really care if people want to rate Makar slightly better, or much better or whatever. Makar is brilliant.

Reality says both are great at their position and bring slightly different elements to the game. Hughes really surprised me when he was given the C. Didn't realize he had that ability and he's a huge reason this team has turned things around so quickly. Phenomenal player.

It's incredible how many great dmen have been produced in the span of just a few years

I wouldn't. They're on par now. You might even give Hughes a slight edge. And Hughes is only 24-years-old and still progressing. Everyone who's followed his career knows that. He's improved every season, and not just marginally, but significantly. According to Avs fans, Makar is not progressing and he's having an "ass" year. I think that might actually be more of an excuse as to why Quinn has caught up to Makar though. Hughes can't possibly be as good as Makar, so we'll say Makar is having a bad year.

It's not like we Avs fans are pulling shit out of our ass. It's been well documented that Makar is dealing with a nagging hip injury. He's made the decision through it this year, but he's probably going to need surgery at some point.

And yet he still PKs and has a high PPG.

I always appreciate a reasoned reply. :thumbu:

I think though that his numbers still track with his best year ever. He appears to be tracking very close to his 2021-22 career-high season.

Now, you might make the argument that even injured, Makar is rising above. That wouldn't be an unreasonable argument, but one that could only be settled by the passage of time and of future events.

Makar's defensive metrics this season are closer to a pylon than his 2022 Norris year.

He's feasting on the power play but not nearly a complete player.

Hughes is flat out better.

Let's not dump on Makar here, in his "down" season he's 12th in NHL scoring and virtually a lock to be a Norris finalist.

That being said, I would not have put money on Hughes winning the Norris before the season started yet he's the frontrunner heading into the All-Star break.

He's taken a big step forward this season, the way he drives the entire Canucks offense is incredible to watch.

These are fun.

I think the majority of us understand it’s a 1A vs 1B situation right now. There are some weird delusions out there that Makar is in another class and despite the evidence it persists. Canucks fans understand that it could go either way and that’s fine. If love to get the Canucks a Norris but 2nd to another legend is quite fine.
These screenshots are absurd

Makar is only 1 point away from Hughes now. But Hughes has a stunning +35 this is incredible.

Those guys are going to war for the norris, just like Kucherov and Mackinnon going at it for the art ross.

Those two battles are really fun to follow.

As a Canadiens fan i hope you Avs, Canucks and Lightning fans cherish those extremely special players. My team hasn't seen a ppg player since Kovalev like 15+ years ago! And that was only one year. After that we have to go back to the 90s to find one.

And you guys have like... multiple ppg players including freaking defensemen! I just hope Hutson becomes some sort of Makar / Hughes / Fox. Even if he was just 70% as good as these guys i'd be satisfied.

Go Canucks! your fans deserve a nice playoff run (if not the cup!!). If not for the Nucks i wouldn't mind seeing the Avs or Edmonton getting it.
