Bad teammate, burying former partners like that.
SO THAT'S WHY TANEV LEFT!
And Heiskanen, Makar, Fox, Dahlin are just old men?
He managed more points than all of them last year.

Maybe he has his Toews to really shine now.

Maybe he finally adds a worthy shot but otherwise offensive dmen tend of peak young in terms of production. His Defense will always be limited by his size.
Weird he's got size issues but Makar and Fox don't.

According to the Athletic the top six candidates and their odds are:

- Cale Makar 66.7%
- Miro Heiskanen 15.2%
- Adam Fox 6.1%
- Rasmus Dahlin 6.1%
- Charlie McAvoy 3.0%
- Victor Hedman 3%

He will finish top 10 in voting forsure but unfortunately he's playing at a time when some other dmen will put up better individual stats and play on alot better teams

Those top 5 will be top 5 candidates for quite a few years

Uhhhhh, don’t even think he finishes top 5 in voting
agree, weird hype thread. Maybe we can let 1/4 of the season to go buy before speculating on long shots to win Calder, Norris, and Hart?

Based on what OP?

Are we expecting Makar, Fox, or Dahlin to regress or get injured? Pure fantasy at this point.

i would be surprised, i thought you had to be passed over at least once when you earned it before you were given it

Did you expect it last year when Karlsson won? Hughes feels like he's much closer to a Norris today than what EK was a year ago.

He’s not a top 5 defenceman and still not a good supporting cast

Yeah, perhaps, but then you can pick any random defenseman and suggest there is a possibility. I think it's pretty unlikely for Hughes this year....way too early to talk about it, but I see too many other guys ahead of him as potential choices. Norris tends to be a reputation award as well....so perhaps more earning to be done.

I don't think Hughes is good enough all-around (like a Lidstrom for example.....who took time to get the reputation votes).....and his offensive game isn't good enough to separate himself from the pack.....at least he hasn't demonstrated that yet.

Can he? Sure. He's one of ~5 guys that has the offensive ability to do it. It's just a bit crowded. I don't think he'll be THE guy unless he gets some breaks in his favor.

He’ll need to score 100 points like Karlsson.
Sadly I agree as the NHL narrative amongst the voters is he's weak defensively and just a offensive guy. However the truth is he's improved dramatically in his defensive game since coming into the league and though is not great defensively he's average defensively at worst. His offensive game is what will win him the Norris if he gets a 100 points though.

Makar is far more physical and has a much stronger base. You don’t have to read EP vitals stats to realize this. Not all human bodies are the same even if the stats seem to indicate there isn’t a huge difference. Makar will rock a fool from time to time and his skating platform is about power and explosiveness.

But yeah back to the OP, I don’t see why Hughes can’t be on the shortlist this year of guys who can win the Norris. He’s hovering around 5/6 in Vegas odds, ahead of for example Karlsson so I think there’s a general perception this wouldn’t be an surprising outcome even if he’s not the favorite.

Makar - 5'11" 187 lbs

Fox - 5'11" - 182 lbs

Hughes - 5'10" - 180 lbs

LO - f***ing - L

Whole different weight class there...
I heard in a leg wrestling match, Fox and Makar sent Hughes through the drywall (yes it was a 2v1 leg wrestle)

I still think the others he’d be competing against will play better defensively, unless Karlsson is in the mix, so he’d have to have the points edge by a lot.
