Actually horvat is your best player and one of my favorite players in the league. Didn't say those guys suck so relax.

I'd agree Horvat is the best overall Canuck right now. Just like Marner is the best Leaf by far. Pettersson and Matthews might get there soon but Pettersson is too inconsistent and Matthews is too useless at everything other than his shot.

They were handed these players so not really. Anyone with a brain would have drafted these players.
Not really.

Boeser was not a consensus pick, Konecny and Merkley were more hyped and ranked around where he was pre-draft.

Hughes was hardly the obvious pick, he was in that Boqvist/Dobson/Hughes/Bouchard cluster for most people.

Pettersson and Glass were usually ranked right next to each other, some even had Vilardi higher.

This is exactly how I remember it as well. All great picks by the Canucks.

Their recent mistakes were not taking:
Nylander or Ehlers over Virtanen
Tkachuk or Sergachev over Juolevi
But 3/5 is better than most, and that doesnt include other great picks like Horvat.

In terms of 'easy picks', I'd go as far as saying Podkolzin is probably the easiest since Hodgson over a decade ago. The Canucks always seem to be in a position to make hard decisions with their 1st round picks.

Merkley was in the 2018 not 2015 lol

Yeah Boeser was a sweet pick at #23, in less games he has more points than #8 pick Timo Meier.

And Petey was considered a bit of a reach at #5, Glass seemed like the one a lot of hf/canucks board fans and on twitter wanted, even Mittelstadt.

2018 mock drafts were all over the place after dahlin and svech, with:
zadina, tkachuk, bouchard, quinn hughes, dobson, wahlstrom, boqvist, kotkaniemi.

And this JB team has never had no help or luck at the draft lotto, no top 4 overall spots with our picks.

Merkley was in the 2018 not 2015 lol

hes referring to Nick Merkley, who was ranked around the 20's in the 2015 NHL draft. He was a popular choice among Canuck fans at 23.

amateur scouting is tricky as hell. Once again Bruins looking like a genius picking Pasta in 2014 and not coming out with Boeser, Connor, Barzal, or Chabot, in 2015 when they were in position to pick any 3, and came out with none.

not a Benning fan, I say it again, not a Benning fan, but his drafting is his bright point. trades and free agent signing a different story....

Yeah, you won't see many Canucks fans try to argue Benning is a genius - far from it - but he has made some great picks in the 1st round. Job saving picks, really.

Among D-Men who have played 100 or more minutes (a very large pool so it's not like I'm cherry picking here) Hughes ranks 19th in the NHL in CA/60 (48.71). The next best Canuck? Stecher and Myers rank 74th and 75th respectively (53.79 and 53.85).

Weirdly enough, Hughes' partner Tanev ranks way further down the list at 124th (58.52). It's unreal there's such a big discrepancy between two guys who have played together exclusively since Game 1. Maybe an advanced stats expert can help me out with that one.

I think Hughes is getting a pretty hard o-zone push no? So maybe he’s getting some o-zone starts that Tanev doesn’t? Only seen Canucks twice this season, one being the oilers game where I ofc focus on my own team, so I don’t know. And if Hughes is getting that type of o-zone push maybe he’s getting similar treatment for the on the fly shifts which would skew things vs his partner as well.

No.

Well there you go, I was mislead by someone claiming he had something like 70% ozs, but shame on me not checking the data. I stand corrected.

Edit: just checked Natural stattrick. According to them he’s got 65% ozonestarts and also a fairly high number of on the fly shifts so it seems he is in deed getting a push and I also noticed the numbers above are after just six games. I withdraw my corrected stand.

Edit2: the on the fly shifts were actually the lowest of the D group so I was off there but I still stand uncorrected regarding my first stand. Yeah I’m done editing now.

Can Quinn Hughes win the Norris this year? The recently named captain has looked even more dynamic and explosive during training camp and pre season. Hughes also added velocity on his wrist shot and slap shot this off-season. Most importantly though, Hughes has been partnered with quite possibly the most talented D-partner he has ever had in Filip Hronek.

We all know that points is a very big defining factor for the Norris award and I think Hughes has a chance to get 90 pts this year. The Canucks Powerplay of Hughes, Pettersson, Miller, Boeser, Kuzmenko will hover around top 5-10 in the league.

Hughes finished 9th in voting last year being partnered with the likes of Luke Schenn and Noah Juulsen

Thoughts?
