Kinda surprised that assist counted although he deserved it and the play only happened cause of him. Looked like the Caps player blocked it and then slightly bumped it to Boeser

Hughes on ice scoring percentage per game will revert to the mean. At his shooting rates it could easily mean a 95 point season.
That’s not the point I was addressing... it was the post that said he needs to produce. He has for a rookie defensemen.

My point was he will produce. If his on ice percentage per game reverts to the mean for a calibre of his defender that would project to a 95 points season. For perspective thats higher than the career best of many hall of fame players who played in the high scoring 90s like Eric Lindros.

I agree he is producing. Just having some poor luck on the bounces. If he keeps up this level of production for example a 20 year career he would average to be the highest scoring defender of all time.

Watched basically all of the game tonight, in case the policemen-posters are in here checking up on everyone again.

-4 in a 5-5 game.

Great rush on his goal. Not many d-men in the NHL could do that; he definitely has unteachable talent that is showing more as he settles in.

Not really his fault on Kuznetsov’s first, drifted high but Tanev got caught off his man. Two weak board plays on the shorty. Drifted into empty space and didn’t engage either screen on Kempny’s first, and then again just completely disregarded his man in front of the net on the tying goal in favour of standing uselessly beside the net, not even remotely in the shooting lane.

While he’s been impressive on defending the rush throughout this year, his defense once opponents are set is remarkably poor.

He's making up that lack of bounces at even strength on the PP though.

His individual points percentage is 100. Shooting percentage of 14%

An IPP like that is impossible to maintain. Usually you might see one or two defensemen per year over 80.

Shooting percentage could be possible, but not going to happen every year.

Wow, they will weaponize this example tonight for a long time.

anyways he could have done better, but goals were not truly his fault and markstrom
whois been the teams mvp really crap bed tonight and the refs allowed the caps to play like bruins. Canucks had 5 power plays should have been 9 including missing a too many man on the ice in ot wtf.

anyways he still looks good onto Florida !!!!!!

Hes great on offense but not good on defence. I remember at the world juniors they always bench him in the 3rd period

Kinda hard to look at just his +/- for the caps game and pin it as a poor defensive effort. Sometimes the pucks just go in. He had a few errors but I didn't think his performance last night was any worse than his typical game.

This is amore realistic description of hughes than the part in bold in the following quote.

Quinn is doing better than expected as an NHL all around defender but people trying to call him the next Orr and the part in bold is really unfounded.

After one game, probably one you didn't watch all the way through, you come to this conclusion. Disregard all of his good defensive plays up to this point, its this one game early on in the season that will define his career.

Yeah I mean it's not like he has a history of playing bad defensively. It's not like they'd bench him for whole periods because they didn't trust him defensively....must be a hater.

Looks great offensivly. His D has been suspect but he's young and D take a while to develop. Once he gets some more weight and some of his man strength the losses on the board battles/in front of the net will drop significantly. He looks like he's gonna be the real deal.

Ahhh yes it's begun. Incredible offensive defenceman who is putting up points so he must be bad defensively.

But it's true. Same with Makar in my viewings. People try and act condescending at the allegation that a teenage defensemen isn't a 60 + point, stud defensively dman. Hughes can skate, he can move the puck, has good vision. He has all the makings of a minute munching dman who quarterbacks the PP for years to come.

Doesn't mean he has shown anything to suggest he is the next great shutdown D. Almost every D who plays his style of game gets roasted for their defensive ability. It's part of the game. The few who don't are the elite of the elite like Lidstrom.

He can't play defence.

His IQ and defensive awareness is elite, he also has great stick work. He seldom gets checked when the opposing team is forechecking because he’s so quick. His defensive play is solid, the game against the Caps was a collapse by the Canucks, especially Markstrom.
