Quinn Hughes Mega thread: Top in points, Norris consideration, MVP and Canucks fans hearts

I dont see Karlsson being allowed to have the rover-forward role for Pitt this year. So he will go back down to possbly 70ish points , I'm not sold on Hamilton, Lindholm, Morrisey being elite elite. I think Hughes is in same tier as Heiskanen and Dahlin. Fox and Makar are clear favorites.

Hughes will very much surprise with a massive massive offensive season along with a more "defensive minded structure" on the Canucks with Tochett being the coach.

He absolutely has the potential to win the Norris now, esp if he hits 82+. But its really up to how good that second pair is. If it craters like many expect it to w/o Hronek. Then the team making playoffs take precedent and Hughes will be back with an anchor and have his usual 80 pt ceiling, may not be enough to fend off Makar or whomever emerges.

i dont think they were insinuating that!

just pointing out Quinn is still growing as well and could take a bigger jump than most do to a skill-increase in his partner
I dont see that at all, hes not growing into his body like tall dudes like Dahlin or Hedman and hes getting a partner who is better offensively than Schenn but not good defensively. We'll have to see if how that pairing shakes out. Could be a disaster if the forwards dont play defense.

I think his reputation will continue to hurt him, and while he’s very good, I don’t think he’s quite as good as some of the usual names (Makar, Fox, Dahlin), so he’ll have to play above his head a bit and/or the others not have the best years/get injured and stand out from the pack in order to win, as I don’t think he’d get the benefit of the doubt on a close vote. Also, I doubt he ends up playing too much with Hronek. The team really needs to spread out the defensive talent as much as possible. And if he plays significant time with the likes of Juulsen and McWard, it just makes it that much more difficult to win when others have partners like Toews and Samuelsson .

i just meant growing as in his game!

i should be more specific

im not sure if Quinn wins a Norris but i think hell get really close a few times!

He has a chance for sure, but it's tough. So much competition right now - Q Hughes, Makar, Fox, Dahlin, Karlsson, Heiskanen, McAvoy, etc.

If anyone is curious, here are the current odds from https://www.si.com/fannation/betting/odds/nhl-norris-trophy :
- Makar +190 (34.5% implied probability)
- Fox +500 (16.7% implied probability)
- Dahlin +800 (11.1% implied probability)
- Q Hughes +1400 (6.7% implied probability)
- Heiskanen +1400 (6.7% implied probability)
- McAvoy +1400 (6.7% implied probability)

That feels about right to me. Maybe Hughes should be a touch higher, closer to 10% than 6.7%, but I wouldn't personally put his odds above 10%.

I haven't been following Pens training camp.

Wouldn't it it make sense to have Karlsson out as much as possible with the bottom 2 forward lines whenever Geno and Sid aren"t on the ice?

I would love to see it. Though big picture wise, it sucks that the Norris is essentially an offensive defenseman award now.

Let players like Slavin get their due.

Maybe he finally adds a worthy shot but otherwise offensive dmen tend of peak young in terms of production. His Defense will always be limited by his size.

Can Quinn Hughes win the Norris this year? The recently named captain has looked even more dynamic and explosive during training camp and pre season. Hughes also added velocity on his wrist shot and slap shot this off-season. Most importantly though, Hughes has been partnered with quite possibly the most talented D-partner he has ever had in Filip Hronek.

We all know that points is a very big defining factor for the Norris award and I think Hughes has a chance to get 90 pts this year. The Canucks Powerplay of Hughes, Pettersson, Miller, Boeser, Kuzmenko will hover around top 5-10 in the league.

Hughes finished 9th in voting last year being partnered with the likes of Luke Schenn and Noah Juulsen

Thoughts?

He will be in the running with Makar , Hamilton, Fox, Dahlin

if he can have seasons over 90 points youre always a shot at the Norris i think!

just depends what others do around you

if hes neutral or a small plus on defense and over 90-95 points, thats Norris-calibur!

It depends on how Vancouver does this year, playoffs and all that. Unless a guy has a historic season, like Karlsson last year, it's hard to win league wide awards on a middle of the pack team.

Oh thank god, I was worried we were going to make it through whole page without NJ fans making it about their Hughes. I would really love to cheer for their team in the East but the fans sure seem to want to make that difficult.

Don`t need any fair weather fans, thanks.

Doubtful. I think the Canucks would have to have a ton of team success to genuinely get him into that conversation.

Also, from the brief look we got...he doesn't really mesh all that well with Hronek anyway. It's such a completely waste of both of them tbh. All because they've massively whiffed on addressing that RHD spot beside Hughes and obviously don't feel like they have any other viable options left. But don't seem particularly inclined to even try to seriously address the issue.

Well the probabilities don't really work like that. What you're supposed to do is take the harmonic mean of every option, then divide it by the amount of options, and then divide the implied probability by that amount.

That's because the probabilities add up to like 88% or something depending on the vig, not 100%.
