I remember a lot of the same complaints about the team last year as well, and Torts was the coach then.
I may not remember that much, but I recall the fans and media lauding the hard work of this team.
I don't think the coach or the system should be the blame for how it's played. But I guess that's what you're saying too haha.
Lack of heart, effort, guts and intensity only comes from the fat cats on ice.

Wore thin or not, they still worked their tukhuses off every night. Because Torts go them to play for each other, not for the name on the back.

I agree, but the method eventually wore thin. The spoiled brats decided they didn't want to be yelled at, anymore.

Again, tons of regressions have led to what we have now.

Dude aside from 11-12 we were a mediocre team under Torts. How quickly people forget that.
Being a playoff team is decent. Being one of the final 8 is not mediocre.
The personnel changed after 11-12. We are much, much softer bunch.
Last year's team was not the 11-12 team, but was still far from soft. This is the softest team since the first post lockout team.

yeah hence why I said ASIDE from 11-12.

And we were soft last year, also... come on now....

Last year's team took a hit effort-wise with loss of Dubi, Prust, etc., but it wasn't nearly as bad as we are seeing this year, and this is coming from someone who was not a fan of last year's squad. While physical toughness became an issue last season, their mental toughness had not yet deteriorated to extent that it has today.

The Rangers were more resilient last season than we have seen so far this season. They did not blow leads last year - they ranked second in winning percentage when scoring first. And they could come back occasionally as well - they were a middle of the pack team in winning percentage when trailing first, and we are dead last in this category this year. There weren't as many blow outs either.

Whatever mental toughness this team once had is gone. Their confidence gets shaken and it's over - one mistake is enough to do this team in and they are unable to recover from it.

The centers, collectively, don't skate well enough for this system. Same goes for most of the d-men outside of McDonagh and Moore. It's a speed and skating system. This is why players like Kreider, Zuccarello, Hagelin and Nash look good (Hagelin has looked good, but seems tentative).

Granted, I didn't watch an exorbitent amount of Canucks games the last seven years, but I feel like AVs system puts more emphasis on hockey IQ and the innate ability to think the game more than speed. I'm thinking about the Sedins who don't strike me as much better skaters than Stepan, and the success they've had with AV. Obviously. those are two players in a category of their own, so I may be wrong, but even looking at our roster Richards, McDonagh, D.Moore, Zuccarello, and I would even put Kreider (though I know he seems classified here as a player lacking hockey IQ I disagree wholeheartedly), are all players who have found success because of their decisiveness with the puck, their ability to read the ice surface and make smart decisions. They players who have stumbled, strike me as more indecisive than as bad skaters, see Callahan, J.Moore, Staal, etc.

I see a lot of excuses being made. Same old story in Rangerville.

The team identity has reverted to where it was pre Tort's....and I'm not saying he should not have been canned. The players were not responding to him either.

The problem was, is and continues to be that there is no accountability. It starts in the front office and works it's way down.

Ahhh... Typical scape goats... They make too much money for what they produce? I don't think they are to blame. Here're my 2 cents:
Cent 1: They have liittle support from defense IMHO.
Every time Richards or Nash do coast-to-coast I think of how poorly constructed our defense is. We need a puck carring Ds on every pair yet we have only one in McD and no more. MDZ is no good to deliver the puck to Fs. He used to do it, but something went wrong. It is hard to do it from the Press Box, BTW. Staal is trying to be a just D that cannot be blamed, he cannot be blamed for being hurt either, not at this time anyway. The other 4 Ds are purely stay-at-home type. Absence of puck movers back does not allow to use 5 unit system AV wants. Solution: since trade for PMD is a pipe dream, work with MDZ, find what his problem is. If no result, fire Ulfie and get a real D coach that will get MDZ play to his talent level.
Cent 2: Our bottom 6 wingers is a compilation of players that are upset with thier roles. They want to be top 6 and don't do a good job being displaced. Boyle is the best out there, not by talen, but by craftmanship. We need size in there. Moore has all that needed, but he is not yet back to NHL. Pyatt and Poliot are the sad picture of the players that are sorry about themselves. AV has to play them because the genious who singn them is loved by the team owner for no particular reason.
Solution: Trade, wave or whatever... To get true bottom 6 players. Prust's 2.5 millions per look like spare change compared to void his absence created. Also, ask Callahan to lead bottom 6 with his work ethic example. Cally doesn't do top 6 well at this very moment anyway.

What happened?

After our poor start we went through a stretch of a dozen or so games where we were skating, creating high quality chances, and outplaying our opponents almost every night. We didn't win every game but I was proud of the way this team played. They were fun to watch for the first time in forever. How did they become unwatchable and now they get outplayed every game?

They're content with being .500 and not interested in playing above it.

I can't think of anything else.

In regards to Lundqvist with problems with this team.

The first time we made the playoffs since the 1996 Gretzky Messier team was 2006-2007. Which was Lundqvist first year in net. since Lundqvist has been in net for seven seasons we have made the playoffs every year except 2009-2010.

So anyone who thinks we shouldn't have spent the money on him and spent it on scorers. From 1997 through 2006 all the Lafontaine's,Nedved's,Fleury's,Lindros's,Holik's,Bure's didn't get us anywhere.

Long term you think Talbot is any better than Dunham or Blackburn?

2011-2012 Eatern conference finals team was an outlier.

Our team and talent outside of our goalie is not a playoff team. With Lundqvist we are a first or second round playoff exit team.

The sad part is some mediocre talented team's win through grit. We don't have that either.

Lundqvist will get hot, which in turn will have our team climb above our .500 record. Fan's will be happy. We will lose first or second round of the playoffs. Lundqvist will have a couple bad games and people will be pissed at him and complain about his contract.

At this point with Del Zotto we need to trade him and get a better second line winger. get a better grit 3rd or 4th liner and maybe one strong tough defense men instead of Moore or Falk. Like a Jason Strudwick type.

To bad we couldn't sign Doan. He would have been perfect.

their convinced the same old **** is going to somehow get them out of this cycle of mediocrity....their too comfortable things need to change.

You have to be able to pull some sort of positives out of whats going on to justify sticking it out until things turn around, im having a hard time finding those examples.

The problem with this team is that the insane asylum runs this organization and they just conducted their second players only meeting 1/3 of the way through the season.

i completely agree with this. the players we all thought would look great in a more offensive system (zucc, kreider, nash, McD) actually do look great. the fact of the matter is our roster as a whole is not good enough to shine in this kind of system. you can thank you know who for that

Fwiw
following the rangers loss to the bruins 10 days ago, eddie olczyk said this about the rangers, “the rangers don’t finish a lot of opportunities. We talked during the broadcast about how they changed thier style. The defensemen are much more involved. They are playing much more into the offensive zone but they don’t have a lot of pure finishers. It puts a lot of pressure on the team d and a lot of pressure on the goaltending. At the end of the day they need rick nash to do what he has been doing. When he is on he is one of the premiere players in this league.

It's a deadly combination when the D is learning a new system that they haven't perfected yet. And it's not entirely on the D either. In this system when a D pinches, there supposed to be a forward covering the point for them, when that doesn't happen you get the odd man rushes that we see.

Bob mckenzie, on tsn drive recently, said that the rangers have “no margin for error with the rangers because they don’t score a lot of goals. It’s a real impotent offense.â€
Ouch.

effort and heart.. i think this team has to much skill and talent to be a .500 team.. they need that killer instinct, determination, and drive to want it more then there opponent..

its sad... i wish AV wasn't laid back and had more emotion

Dude. Just stop. What talent? Where is it? Because I've seen it from very few players this year.

And calling for us to trade a bunch of assets for a UFA Statsny? Embarrassing.

I'm not saying this was the right thing to do, but Erikson is no where near the player to the Bruins that Nash is to the Rangers, and Thornton brutally assaulted the guy responsible. You think that doesn't send a message to the rest of his team mates? Thornton is about to be suspended for games, likely without pay. His name will be dirtied league wide. Yet this is the direct type of action that brings a locker room together. Brings guys together. Makes everyone fight for each other, rather than just for themselves.

You gotta be kidding me. Thorntons action is totally unacceptable, and has nothing to do with standing up for your team mates. It´s pure violence.

I think we've seen that there is more to this roster than we're seeing. Whether they every find their game is another question, but this roster certainly has more talent than it's showing. Callahan is off his game, so is Staal. If those two get it together this team gets a huge boost. Brassard, Del Zotto, and Hagelin, even Stepan have shown that they can be better than they've been. Again, whether they get themselves together and play to their capabilities is another things entirely, but I disagree with the notion that this team is void of talent.
