please see the new jersey devils over the past decade. Low scoring, lower goals against. You dont need to score a ton to win, but to have an elite goalie who is playing below their normal standards is a problem when your team isnt scoring a ton.

He's the most important player on the team! He has his cap hit, he has his reputation, the team is built around him. Any marginal improvements or declines in his performance matter so much more than, I don't know, Derrick Brassard's game-to-game form.
Poring over his game and nitpicking him over the Internet when he's in a slump is uncomfortable for me when he's given the team so much over the years, but is it wrong to also be uncomfortable about the extension?
What year did they win their last cup? Its a new game now dude. Hank cant do it all, sorry. He is human. Our team is no good
and our goalie isn't playing to elite standards, that can not be disputed. I am not blaming hank for anything, but he is not playing as the elite goaltender he has played like in the past couple years.

Having 2 HOF defensemen probably helps. Back when they had the A-Line, those Devils teams scored a metric-****-ton of goals. Those Devils teams make this Rangers team look like a hungover Pro Beach Hockey team. Hell, any Devils team from '94-2004 would have kicked the **** out of the '11-12 Rangers. FFS, we can't even beat the Devils now!

And if he was playing to elite standards, how much better would we be? We're 26th in goals/game. Even acknowledging the fact that Hank isn't playing up to elite standards, what is the end game here? We scored 1 goal tonight in garbage time. Do you want him to post a shut out every game? It's not possible.

If Hank was playing up to a Vezina level and the team was 20-10...they would still be one cold streak away from being exposed for what the are: a mediocre (to be nice) team devoid of the intensity and talent necessary to be anything more than a playoff berth contender.

Yeah I guess technically 15-15-1 is .500, but it's also sorta 15-16.
you are correct, its not possible. but what is possible is an elite goalie stealing a couple games ( and a couple points ) here and there, until a fix can be made to improve a team. This year, i'd say hes let up some real bad, real late goals to cost us some points......not steal us some. He's still good, but hasnt been great.
Again, i reference the devils over the last decade.......and brodeur the other night. He's still got it.....and hank is still trying to prove he still has it.

just a side not, i was referring to how the devils have played in the early 2000's until now. Not the late 90's devils. Yes, they scored in the era you are talking about, it was the devils from 2002 till now where they were defensive shut down and only average in terms of goals scored. Since 2002 the NJD were consistently in the bottom half of the league for GF and consistently in the top half for GA.

No doubt. He needs to return to form. But the team in front of him has to score 2 goals a night to give him a chance for the W. Can we really ask him to pitch a shutout every time out?

Nailed it. Believe it or not this team actually isn't terrible on the wings. Zuccarello has been a pleasant surprise, Kreider is developing very nicely, and obviously there's Nash/Hagelin/Callahan (Callahan has been hot turd all year though; I am 100% convinced it's the injuries).
Our problem is at Center. We currently have 3 second line centers. Here's the problem:
Stepan is not a first line center. I find it hilarious that people actually think he is a first line center on any team in this league. He's a solid 2 way 2nd line center at best; anyone that thinks otherwise needs to put down the Ranger kool aid
Richards has lost a step. He's been good this year, but he's not the dominant player he once was due to a severe decline in foot speed (watch highlights of Richards in Dallas; he was actually one of the faster players in the league).
The Richards/Stepan situtation has kind of left Brassard in an akward position. He's not going to succeed as a third line Center; we relied on him last season and he took it and ran with it. He needs top 6 minutes + PP time to be effective; he is not as good defensively as Stepan, but I'd seriously argue his offensive upside is better, especially on the PP and carrying the puck.
And then there's Boyle/Moore, both of which suck, but are both very good 4th line centers. It's very clear at this point that Boyle will never duplicate his 20 goal year.
So basically, we're left with 3 2nd line centers, 2 4th line centers, and a kid we keep bouncing around who's really a center to play wing

Sather really must have been smoking crack when he assembled the roster this year. Why even bother signing D.Moore? I love the guy but how redundant can we possibly be? Why not sign a useful 6/7 Dman other than Falk? This team is a complete mess
Change bad luck to mismanagement and I 100% agree. Parenteau never got a fair shake here which is pathetic considering how few offensive weapons we had at the time
