you can't see how a team with Zacha/Coyle as their top two centres or a team that made the playoffs by 1 point miss? You don't have much of an imagination!

not saying either will miss but it really doesn't seem that implausible

I love Ottawa's D.

Sanderson - Zub
Chabot-Chychrun
Brannstrom - Hamonic
-----
Kleven - JBD

Then you got a top 6 with Stutzle, Tkachuk, Batherson, Giroux, Norris, Tarasenko. With complimentary pieces in Kubalik and Pinto. That is 8 players who can put 20+ goals up.

If Ottawa is well coached this year they are a lock not even a wild card a top 3 divisional spot.

DJ Smith is still the coach, so that caveat isn't going to happen. They're going to start 5-15-1 and have a defensive system that is comparable to Swiss cheese.

Keep in mind for the panthers, they really kicked it up at the end of the season. It seemed to take almost the entire season to roll Maurice’s system correctly and we essentially have the same top-9, except exchange Duclair for Rodrigues. Same goaltending. Same coaches. I think after how they finished the regular season as well as their playoff success, I do expect a better regular season, pending injuries of course. They biggest worries are Ekblad and montour recovering. I wouldn’t be surprised if montour heals up pretty fast, he’s a freakish athlete/specimen so if he does come back quicker than expected and it’s just Ekblad out, I think we improved the D overall and we’ve played well without Ekblad before so I think we can weather the storm. Forsling-Montour has shown to be a good top line for us. Mikkola over M.Staal is a big positive (I give staal credit in the playoffs, talking regular season though), Mahura on the bottom pairing was solid for us. With OEL and kulikov filling out the other two spots till Ekblad comes back, I wouldn’t be crazy worried.

However, I really have no real expectation. I’ll just enjoy the ride and see where it takes us. If Ottawa stays healthy, I think they have a ton if potential. Buffalo continues to improve and if someone like levi steps up in net, they could definitely be a playoff team. I don’t think Detroit will be terrible, Boston will still be solid, and I expect Toronto and tampa to still be the top-2 in the division. So it’s a crapshoot. I won’t make predictions but I don’t think the panthers season is as dire as some think, I don’t think last season should be too much of a reflection of what this season will be. They figured it out at the end and I hope they ride that into this season too.

It would be silly to consider the team with the best American forward and the best Finnish forward on the planet as a team that will miss the playoffs. They will dominate the Atlantic when playoffs come around.
Has anyone said they’ll miss the playoffs? Most have them in a wildcard spot

Really tough to predict.

I don't think Toronto will finish first. Too many guys take days off, the bottom 6 forwards aren't really improved, defence is good but not great, their goalies have a total of 142 NHL games between them, and they still have a bad coach. On the other hand, they have three excellent forwards in Matthews, Marner, and Nylander, at least until the playoffs start.

Probably second or third in the division.

Bruins fan with over 300 posts on the Leafs board in the past 2.5 years. Avg hf.
I (we all) enjoy reading the leafs board, it's "pure' entertainment and I'm disappointed in myself for limiting at 300...aiming for 1,000 posts by year end... 300 posts  LOL Really now

Anything is possible in the Atlantic this year. There is no guarantee for any one club.

A key injury here or there, a surprise "for the good" or "for the bad" player(s) here or there, and voila a new Atlantic.

Eastern Wild card is going to be tight!

I think the only locks in the Atlantic this year are Montreal and Detroit missing the playoffs.

Beyond that there's a pretty wide range of possibilities and health will be a factor

You look at Toronto, Boston, TB and Florida and they're on most pundit lists as having the worst off seasons.

You look at Buffalo and Ottawa and both are poised to make a jump.

Montreal is likely not going to make playoffs and not so sure about Detroit. Anything is possible. But there are no guarantees for the other teams.

Hey Folks,

Going to try this again, please refrain from attacking other posters or fan bases. There are also more than just two teams in the Atlantic, so yeah…

Thanks .

Think we need a reminder here. I apologize to the other members here who are trying to post around the trolling and bickering.

Considering history, system, and remaining core of players remaining it will be a shock if Boston misses. Playoff success is less likely.

Florida is an easier choice to miss as they had a Montreal type fluke run and likely not repeated.

Who, Florida? I predicted them outside the playoffs, yeah. But not by some bizarre hyperbolic amount. I think it's gonna be very close between Buffalo/Boston/Florida

Its not really a fresh hot take out of left field when you look at last year's standings and the realities particularly surrounding their goaltending.
You keep talking about goaltending regressing to the mean while forgetting they had some of the worst shooting luck in the league last season. Panthers had some of the best offensive analytics in the NHL last season and scored nowhere near as well as they should have. They regress to the mean offensively and they can afford regression from their goaltending

Anyone else think the Atlantic is taking both wildcard spots?
I see Tampa, Toronto, Florida, Boston as locks then whoever comes out on top between Buffalo, Ottawa and Detroit will take the final wildcard spot.
I could see the rags, canes and devils taking the top 3 spots without much difficulty but the islanders will be competitive and I think the jackets will be the most improved team in the league and could challenge for a wc spot as well.
Others like the pens for one last hurrah, an optimism I don’t share but understand why they would lean that way.
Probably a dogfight like last season.
