If Matthews was paid his current contract based off 38 games then I will be happy to see Dubas go.
He wasn't, of course. He was paid based off of his entire pre-signing period, which was one of the best in the entire cap era.
It was just some additional information that many people seem to forget.

I don't understand why his contract was different than Stamkos.
Because he was a better player than Stamkos. Stamkos had the advantage of playing with somebody better than him, and still produced worse 5v5 and on the PP through his pre-signing period. He just got pumped full of PP time to boost his raw point totals.

I wonder how much Jeannot and Colton want to be Lightning. JBB has shown willingness and ability to make space, but things are getting tight enough that I'd say either is a viable offersheet target. I'm not sure either is worth the finnagling to get our 2nd back to do it, but it would hilarious to see someone throw out something like 3+mx3 at a 2nd comp after what they paid at the deadline

I say we get Samsonov and hopefully O'Reilly and Acciari signed to new contracts before we start screwing around.

To be fair 3%

Stamkos 11.66% of cap
Matthews 14.64%
You're looking at it the wrong way. What's 14.64/11.66? 25%.

The gap in their production levels wasn't quite that big, but you also have to consider the differing situations they put up those levels of production in.
Nobody's denying it was a good contract for Stamkos though.
You and I will never agree on Matthews contract being good but I am curious what you think his next contract should be.

Fair. Really I'm just covering my ears to the OT years past relevance convo and throwing out something, anything to do with the roster and opportunities moving forward

I honestly think the Kings could out the Oilers. They have the personnell to slow down the offence, and Edmonton's goaltending situation is just frightening. So much pressure on young Skinner.
True. LA did their thang against the flames last night also.

Didnt find any threads about it.... but did yall see that twitter rumor that matthews is getting the extension, and its going to be 8 years and 112 millions?

Honestly, I'm hoping that Dubas (yes, I think he will be re-signed) finally prioritizes and addresses a top 4 RHD this summer, either via trade or UFA.

With Holl moving on as a UFA, and Liljegren developing well and now Timmins and Niemala in the pipeline, we need to bring in the RHD that will mesh with Rielly and give us flexibility to rotate Brodie in at LHD and relief for Gio.

We simply cannot expect or count on a 40 year old Gio to play every game next season, nor discount the possibility that he may even want to retire after this season.

Our LHD looks solid with the addition of McCabe and our Marlies players. RHD continues to be the squeaky wheel that needs the grease, and our pairings are going to continue to be scrambled until we finally make the move to bring in a RHD that will work with Rielly, so that we are getting the most out of him as well. It would be like making 2 additions at once....... 3 if you consider not re-siging Holl (not because I hate Holl, but because Keefe has no idea how to use him properly).

I think the Leafs should go with 10 + 7

Role 3 lines and 3 pairings, with a PK forward and defender.

Archaic thought going with 4 lines when today's players are pure athletes. If they can't keep up dump them.

NBA on ice.

That's a big question mark at this point... what is Matthews now? He's currently a very good, two way Center. Elite? I really don't know, and don't think he's elite this season. His elite skill was his scoring/shooting ability. That ability is gone... I don't know if an offseason, or surgery fixes that or not.. but this is not the same Matthews as last year. I mean, if he's still 60 goal Matthews, plus how he's improved the other parts of his game, I have no issue with a raise, even $14 mil. But... if he's a 40 goal, all round good two way C... then really... I'd say just resign for where his cap hit is today... no more.

I'm not even trying to get people to acknowledge the contract as good. I'm just trying to help open people's eyes to recognize that the contract wasn't the disastrous overpayment they've been brainwashed into thinking it is. Fact is, it was pretty reasonable, and consistent with the history of post-ELC contracts. It's sad seeing people be so upset and foster such a toxic environment towards our best players and GM for a half decade for absolutely no reason but their own lack of understanding of contracts and the situation.

Unfortunately, there is a trend where people refuse to acknowledge any metric or context beyond exclusively points per game, and then they pick out the most fringe contracts according to specifically points per game, and they think they understand the contract landscape, and any contract that doesn't perfectly match that specific contract by that specific metric is bad. That's not how this works.

I haven't done the deep dive into UFA contracts yet that I have with post-ELC contracts, but just with a brief look, and some assumptions since we don't actually have all the information or pre-signing sample yet, I'd guess somewhere in the 14m range. Probably the best 5v5 player overall in the league... Elite on the PP... Pretty much the youngest age range you can get for a UFA... Etc. Historically, his UFA valuation would be right up there near the top.

Personally I’d trade him if wants anything over 13.5M and even that number makes me wince.

Trade him for what? We don't win that trade..... and we are basically in a rebuild.
Assuming LA wants him I’d aim for a package of Byfield, Clarke and Iafallo, Roy to balance salary. You get 2 young players who can impact your roster for the next 10 years. Byfield’s counting stats have been mediocre so far but his underlying numbers have been strong.

I’d RE-sign all of Bunting, ROR, Acciari, Samsonov and run:

Bunting-Tavares-Marner
Knies-Byfield-Nylander
Iafallo-ROR-Jarnkrok
X-Acciari-Lafferty

Rielly-Roy
McCabe-Brodie
Gio-Liljegren
Timmins

Samsonov
Woll

All of a sudden you have a young nucleus of Knies, Clarke, Byfield and you don’t have cap issues going forward.

Not psyched about the post deadline trend so far (numbers are league rankings):
