Pokemon Thread #25 - A new Tera

Apparently it is a seamless open world? That would be pretty crazy if true. I like the starters, the fire one is my favourite so far. Hopefully the evolutions are good.

Are split-releases still necessary? I really don't see the point when we can trade with whoever online(I'm assuming).

Also, why is it always a kid protagonist? Why can't it be some adult who's been lazy or something and is finally stepping out into the world?

I'll be dead honest - this is a little disappointing. I'd rather they focus on developing the worlds they already created. Part of the reason I left Pokemon back in the early 2000s was because they kept adding more regions and Pokemon.

I'm a bit if a history nerd, Rome is my favorite TV show of all time, I watch lectures in my free time about all sorts of historical subjects. A remake of Johto where they expand the world, expand the 'lore' would be my dream game. Johto was the last Pokemon game I played before Lets Go and then Sword and Shield (and Legends Arceeus).

But if what is said up above by @wingsnut19 is true about an open world I'll likely still pick it up. I feel like with the Switch generation there has been progressive improvements to the systems within Pokemon games and that's all you can really expect. That they're slowly moving in the right direction.

I really hope they step up from the open world element of sword and shield. Arceus got them going in the right direction but it's not enough.

And even if they manage to make it work its guaranteed to severely limit the national dex.

I'd be fine with that though overall. The mainline games are in desperate need of returning to a map worth exploring. The on rails experience of the last two gens was so disheartening to play through.

They aren't necessary, but with the amount of nutty Pokemon/Nintendo fans who will buy both, and the tradition of the series being that way it'd be stupid to not do it that way, even if it is another reminder of Nintendo not exactly being consumer friendly.

I don’t know if this is possible but I always wished for one big massive pokemon game. You start at Kanto Region and work your way across all the region. You collect all 8 gym badges and then move on to the next region.

Grass cat looks like a borderline fakemon. I like the other two.

I felt the opposite when I seen them first. Grass starter gave me early gen vibes and I liked it alot. Fire starter looked alright but reminded of something you'd see in a fangame. I didn't like the water starter very much.

Best looking starters they've had in quite some time though. Since gen 4 imo.

Looks like they're getting the hang of the hardware. This one doesn't look like it could run on iPhone 6S

This is the description from the website:
Various towns blend seamlessly into the wilderness with no borders. You’ll be able to see the Pokémon of this region in the skies, in the seas, in the forests, on the streets—all over! You’ll be able to experience the true joy of the Pokémon series—battling against wild Pokémon in order to catch them—now in an open-world game that players of any age can enjoy.

Based on the Japanese logos, we can already expect a new gimmick. One theory I've found interesting on Reddit is that scarlet and violet could bother refer to the light spectrum - with scarlet being infrared light, and violet being ultraviolet. They're both on each end of the visible light spectrum. The new "gimmick" item being a star also plays into that speculated theme. In the trailer, there was a plaza that had a star-shaped ground containing all types. Based on this, it's possible that this new gimmick plays around with move types or pokémon types.

Or maybe they decided to cater to the fanbase (because I know it's always been a popular type in Fakemon communities) - and they're introducing a "light" type.

Anyways, just speculation. Which, as usual, is probably the funniest part with any new gen announcement.

Man I am pumped for this next game! All the starters look awesome which I have not said about the last couple of generations. Off to a good start!

I've never played a pokemon game before, not even pokemon go.

Whats the best / easiest game on the switch to try to get into it?

You really have three options and all of them are fine. BDSP is the most "classic" game, LA is probably the most unique and newest, SwSh is... meh to me. I never played Let's Go so I can't comment on those. Mystery Dungeon is a totally different game.

How f***ing hard is it for them to put an EXP slider in the options? It's literally just a multiplier, it could probably be added in less than an hour to any game.

Lets Go is probably more of a thing if you have young kids or you are super nostalgic for that original Pokemon yellow/blue/red experience.

But yeah good options:
Lets Go - an easy game, a nostalgia trip, an attempt for parents who were fans to get their kids involved
Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl - like you said the classic Pokemon game running on more modern hardware.
Legends Arceus - more of an RPG if you're a fan of those.
Sword and Shield - a first attempt on Switch at the "future" of the core game series. Not bad, some interesting ideas but at this point I'd probably wait for Scarlet/Violet coming in ~10 months from now since that will be their second attempt and should be a much more polished and fleshed out (though I hope they keep the ability to see other players like they did in Sword and Shield and I liked the raids concept).

I was honestly ready to wait for PLA to go on ale at some point to play it but I kept seeing people complimenting it. I've sunk about 4 hours into it so far. The story is definitely a dud and it's pretty obvious that GameFreak is still struggling with world design and processing power to have a large pokedex. I don't know if it's purely the Switch hardware or GameFreak shortcomings but in this gen and especially in this game it's kind of a bummer.

However, this new experience of the pokemon adventure has been an absolute blast. My only concern is with a de-emphasis on trainer battles and seemingly no PVP, it sort of feels like postgame stat focusing is a little pointless. And the side missions/mini games feel a little half baked. If you're going to scale back the traditional formula, there should be a bit more there guiding the catch/huntathon aspect than the flimsy expedition team thing.

I'm having fun with it but I'm hoping there's a more fleshed out sequel in the future. Even if it requires a more powerful next gen Nintendo console. It's a concept Nintendo/GF shouldn't give up on, but it definitely needs work.

It's been said but you might be better off waiting for the next two games. Pokemon Legends Arceus is fun but I don't think you'll appreciate it as much if you don't have a background in Pokemon already. Brilliant Diamond/Brilliant Pearl is the closest to a classic Pokemon experience but I can't recommend it. It's a remake of arguably the most unremarkable Pokemon games in the series. Some of the later generations of games have some very glaring flaws but to me each one was at least more worth it to play in some way. That includes Sword/Shield but I don't know how much I'd recommend that either. It's probably the best of what's available as far as total amount of content in the classic pokemon formula. But if you can find a way to play older games like I'd start with something from gen 1-3 or 5.

Massive mass outbreaks is a super efficient way to hunt shinies but man is my luck abysmal. My target shiny right now is Goomy. I've almost filled up an entire box of shinies from resetting the mirelands for goomy outbreaks. I caught a sligoo from one but no goomy.

I don't mind evolving the sligoo but goomy is the only nice shiny in the evolutionary line in and outside of Hisui.

With DP remakes and a Sinnoh-set prequel, nostalgia for G4 is at an all-time high.

The DP anime perhaps contained the most controversial Pokemon anime character ever, Paul. His training methods practically amounted to animal abuse. If another character like that were in the Pokemon anime today PETA would be all over them.

EDIT: And a couple of distributions also announced as a tie-in.:

When you deposit a Pokémon from Pokémon Brilliant Diamond or Pokémon Shining Pearl to the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME, you will receive Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup with Hidden Abilities as Mystery Gifts in the mobile device version of Pokémon HOME.

If you deposit a Pokémon from Pokémon Legends: Arceus into the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME, you will receive Rowlet, Cyndaquil, and Oshawott with maximum effort levels as Mystery Gifts in the mobile device version of Pokémon HOME.
