They aren't necessary, but with the amount of nutty Pokemon/Nintendo fans who will buy both, and the tradition of the series being that way it'd be stupid to not do it that way, even if it is another reminder of Nintendo not exactly being consumer friendly.Are split-releases still necessary? I really don't see the point when we can trade with whoever online(I'm assuming).
Also, why is it always a kid protagonist? Why can't it be some adult who's been lazy or something and is finally stepping out into the world?

You really have three options and all of them are fine. BDSP is the most "classic" game, LA is probably the most unique and newest, SwSh is... meh to me. I never played Let's Go so I can't comment on those. Mystery Dungeon is a totally different game.
