Pokemon Thread #25 - A new Tera

Pokémon Rom Hacks/Fan Games are where it’s at. It’s crazy what people have created, often with better regions, stories and occasionally Pokémon than official games.

I can count the number of fan made pokemon that I've seen that actually look good on my hands. Key word is "that I've seen" though.

I'm really looking forward to Lockstin & Knoggins region that he'll be coming up with eventually! Definitely recommend checking out his series on the region on YouTube.

True, most of them are pretty poor, and the good ones are usually just taking existing ones, changing their typing and modifying their sprite to reflect that. But those look pretty good when done right.

The forced hand-holding was the reason I dumped pokemon.

Pokemon (at least in its unhacked, vanilla form) has never been difficult. Even as a kid I rarely had trouble beating the first 4 generations but it was enough of a game to keep my brain functioning.

Skipped gen 5 and then when I came back for 6 I was almost insulted by how much more dumbed down it was. Kids aren't drooling idiots, game freak. They don't need shit like forced exp share or the lame "this pokemon wuvs you so much it was able to hang on with 1 HP!" Crap they introduced. Bought gen 8 on a whim during the early stages of the pandemic and hated that even more.

That's also precisely the reason I stayed away from these remakes as well. Gen 4 was the last generation of pokemon I truly liked but I kinda figured they'd add all the garbage from the newer games too. That and iirc 4's end game is basically "idk go catch pokemon or something"

Spot on. In every battle in Brilliant Diamond, I have to read 27 different times "Houndoom is thinking about the first time you met". Like WTF is that. Who cares. I don't want the pokemon to just dispel poison because of our bond. That is stupid. Force me to waste a turn to use an antidote. It kills the need for any sort of strategy in a game that is already very easy.

I also hate how much they have neutered the story. In the original games, your rival was a complete asshole. Team Rocket really felt evil AF, dumb, but evil. I think back to Let's Go Pikachu. While I thoroughly enjoyed the game, it was so watered down in terms of the story compared to the original, almost like it was censored.

The EXP share also makes it way too easy, even though I like the concept. It always sucked having to constantly switch a magikarp in and out of each battle. I do think the party gets WAAYYYY too much exp.

Seems like I'll just be stuck playing HG/SS with a randomizer for the forseeable future.

Holy smokes...please tell me that isn't a real thing? I'm leaning more and more to not picking this game up.

I might be in the minority but I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Not like it’s some award winning masterpiece but it brought back nostalgia for me as this was my last main installment game other than Shield. Story is good and the leveling is pretty accurate if you don’t go out of your way to over level (I did use my starter the whole way through along with pretty much my entire team and lost to the elite four once). It’s a good, low effort game where you can pick it up and put it down as necessary.

Absolutely a real thing. It's annoying.

I very much enjoyed this game but I wouldn't call it great. It's just a solid remake that is missing the Platinum content, with a few interesting adds that don't hold your attention for too terribly long IMO.

I still recommend it for the average Pokemon fan, but I don't know that anyone who likes to get into the postgame stuff like breeding, competitive play, shiny hunting, etc. will find a ton of fun in any of that here.

That isn't me, though, so don't take my word for it.

I really didn't plan my party well. I'm getting absolutely trashed by by the elite four.

Everyone has earthquake

I ran into a huge difficulty spike here too. Having 4/6 of my party being weak to ground (and the other 2 neutral) was a mistake with everyone apparently having unlimited access to Earthquake TMs. Scizor with Swords Dance/Bullet Punch saved my ass.

I got through it but it went from colossally easy to rather challenging. Was a nice change of pace, actually.

They couldn't get a single actual voice into this?

I also don't understand what makes this different from any other Pokemon game. Just looks like they tried to modify BDSP with SwSh graphics. It's just a one minute trailer but it's somehow very uninspiring

I'm really excited by the concept of this game but every time I see more footage I wonder about the graphics.... Like someone, it's 2022 and this is the best looking product they can make?

I've been randomly watching people go through shiny only Nuzlocke's and am tempted to start one myself. Though...I don't actually want to put myself through that torture.

I’ve seen some people talk about Nuzlocke and those rules are insane. I would go crazy. I can’t believe if a Pokémon faints in a battle you can no longer use them for the rest of the game. How does someone make it through the elite 4!!

The main thing with that is to overlevel your team. Especially in Shield (a little less so in BD for me but still), my team went in 10 levels over the rest.

Nuzlockes are great, but I usually go with a hard no-overleveling rule because it defeats the purpose otherwise. That said, it's hard nowadays with permanent exp share lol.

In all my years, I'm pretty sure I'm still in single digits in terms of shiny pokemon found in the wild. I would not want to spend that much time finding shiny pokemon just to advance in the game lol.

I have only found 2 in the wild. A magikarp and an alcremie
