Not Pokemon but adjacent to it. Is anyone checking our Tem Tem? Has a lot of great stuff and I love the art style.

I bought it in early access and played through the game except this new end-game island. It's a solid game for sure. Pretty challenging at times as well. You need to be smart about move usage and swapping in and out counters. Once you beat all the gyms you can then do competitive draft mode against the gym leaders weekly(?) for more rewards. There were raids that were interesting, kind of like the Sword and Shield expansion lairs or whatever where you choose a path - except a bit more involved than simply picking a lane and fighting a Pokemon until the end boss. Now with an end-game island too... I might check it out this weekend or something and see what the additional end-game content brings.

I do hope it blows up. For an indie game it was really good.

In terms of Scarlet and Violet it looks like another baby step forward but I wonder how much time I'll put in to it when I get it. I know people loved Legends Arceeus and it was different for sure but I gave up after probably ~10 hours. I didn't have a major desire to fill out an ancient version of a pokedex in a single player RPG where it's "catch this", "use this move", "see this move". Those first few hours were super fun but once you get used to the design changes, you realize it's pretty barren and repetitive all things considered.

I had the same experience with PLA. Was fun at first, but became even more repetitive than the usual Pokemon games very quickly. I also just could not get over how childish (or poor) some of the designs and dialogue were. I know it's a children's game, but it doesn't have to be that obvious.

For the amount of resources Pokemon has (or should have), it's embarrassing that they cannot seem to make a good, modern game. It is not that difficult to build in different aspects that make it appealing to different markets.

This is getting to be my biggest issues with the games. If it was just not great graphically, I could get over it. But the Switch games have been both ugly and poor performing. The pop in and fps drops get really annoying, and I'm generally really forgiving when it comes to those issues.

Agreed 100%. I can stomach a lot of graphical mishaps and still really enjoy a game. The graphics in Arceus were bad and so far the trailers for Scarlet and Violet also look brutal.

Gamefreak has a ton of money and the Switch has been able to produce far better-looking games. Something just doesn't add up to me.

So are the Switch games a little bit more difficult? Last I played was some X or Y on 3DS.

From what I've seen, Pearl and Diamond look like a more classic experience, while Sword, Shield and Arceus seem to have different mechanics?

I'd say they're considerably easier.

Sword and Shield are mostly the same, just in 3D instead of 2D.

Arceus is not really a traditional Pokemon game. It's probably the most "difficult" Pokemon game on Switch, but is still pretty easy.

In terms of mechanics it's cool that they're mixing things up. Im intrigued enough to jump in. As was discussed above, yeah, the graphics don't look much better. But as long as the gameplay is solid (as much as a pokemon game can be) and the story is half decent, I'm down.

No expectation that we'll get a full national dex ever again but hopefully the dex is more sizable from the beginning this go around, without the need for DLC.

Oh and I'm hoping the overworld re-emphasizes exploration. Two generations now where the map is basically on rails.

Sounds like the new Pokemon has a lot of technical issues.
Gamefreak needs to slow it down and make a game every few years instead. Also, they would probably benefit from reducing the roster of Pokemon somewhat.

Idk man I'm past the point of expecting good graphics from this series on the Switch. To me, I don't know enough about everything that goes into game development and I can't be bothered to educate myself. But I would think there has to be a bigger reason for incomplete national dexes and low resolution graphics than sheer laziness from GameFreak. I mean yeah Breath of the Wild looked great but the game didn't have to juggle 450+ unique monsters with independent sound design work, unique animations, overworld placement, variable stat generation on capture, battle mechanics, traits and abilities, on top of everything else that's stuffed into these games.

Don't get me wrong, Sword and Shield were mediocre but not because the graphics were often times ugly.

I've taken the time to watch some non-spoiler early impressions reviews of the game in anticipation of the game, and it sounds like these games have cleaned up a lot of the problem spots from Sword and Shield and have taken some generally positive advancements in innovating the core formula including a functioning true open world, as opposed to the on rails bullshit they gave us in S/M and Sw/Sh.

And to me that's what I was hoping for after Legends Arceus. If they can deliver a relatively fresh experience that makes the playing experience engaging after years of recycling the same formula, then I really couldn't give a shit if the graphics are subpar.

Botw pushed the hardware more or less to its limits. The Witcher 3, to be a functional port of the original game looks like shit. To me, expecting high quality graphics from this device is a waste of energy, but that's just me. I got the game and I'm looking forward to jumping in and giving it a go tonight.

I can sacrifice graphics for a good game.

Pokemon has not had a good game IMO for a long time.

I bought Violet, unlocks in a couple hours. Never been a Pokemon fan but I feel like trying something new.

All the reviews so far are killing the performance, but mostly loving all the gameplay. Apparently the best Pokemon game in quite awhile in that regard. I put like 40 hours into Cyberpunk on a base ps4, performance has never been a dealbreaker for me.

Went with Violet because Ceruledge looks cool and I like the colour scheme better.

That's fair and I'd agree. I liked X & Y but I know I'm in the minority there.
I loved X&Y. I think Megas were the best mechanic that they have introduced. Probably my second favourite gen after Gen 1 (which I recognize as mostly nostalgia), maybe third after Gen 2. Going to be giving Violet a shot tomorrow, but can't say I have high expectations.

I think it's silly that they got rid of the mechanic. Z moves were whatever but at least there were some neat animations. Dynamax was dumb and lazy while gigantamax was aesthetically similar to mega evolving but restricting the moves to a shared move pool was beyond stupid.

Terrastelizing is solid enough from a battle mechanic perspective, and aesthetically it's decent but when every pokemon shares the same "gem" look it lacks the uniqueness of mega evolution.

Mega Evolution actually took some creativity and it's a shame they didn't keep it going.
