I haven't played a Pokemon game since the Gameboy so I'm pretty excited to play this today. I don't even understand what people are criticizing already. Dynamaxing and National Dex? Man I'm old.
Not having a full National Dex doesn't really impact you if you haven't played for that long, since you don't have any Pokemon to bring over. Dynamax is just a new battling gimmick for this generation.

I think you'll enjoy the games, but be prepared for some very different designs.

For others, am I reading it right that you can't pass Hidden Abilities through breeding anymore? That you can only get them through catching Dynamax Pokemon in the wild area? That seems like a bizarre choice, if true.

Catching Dynamax pokemon is easier than catching regular Pokémon.

Just watching some playthroughs, I think at the very least the graphical issues have been greatly exaggerated. Sure it doesn't look like Breath of the Wild but I don't know why people expected it to. The demand for what a game like Pokemon has to do is different than what Zelda has to do. A lot of people saying the models are unfinished, but I don't think Game Freak really intended to make walls and trees and whatnot any nicer than it is. I mean Fire Emblem Three Houses looks ugly everywhere but the character models and many were calling it a GOTY candidate. The game looks nice enough where it matters.

That said, while I'm not mad at GameFreak or spiteful of Dexit, so many of my favorite Pokemon have been omitted and that really kills my desire to go out and get this game. Also no GTN is pretty annoying.

It’s really not bad. Fun game and interesting. Something you can pick up and out down at any point. All the problems are greatly exaggerated.

Yeah, after battling couple dynamax pokemon. It's not bad at all. I thought it was just stupid when they first announced it, but it's pretty cool.

I still prefer if gamefreak continued the mega evolutions though.

As I'm sure they would be. It's just frustrating that I can't build a team of my favorites into the end game/multi-player. Or at least all of them.

There's so much I tend to nitpick over with these games, but at the end of the day they still have a genius formula and I'm having a great time playing it.

If I get back into the competitive scene I'm sure I'll be more flustered about Dexit though.

Anyone else turn the online off? I hated all the people looking like me running around

My experience with Pokémon is like two episodes of the anime and a half hour of I think the first or second generation of the game on a computer ROM, but it is kind of ridiculous that they'd use the small studio excuse when the franchise as a whole across all methods of making money is likely about to pass its one hundred billionth dollar earned.

List of highest-grossing media franchises - Wikipedia

And a huge Nintendo fanboy that I like is Arlo, and while his whole shtick is an act, you can tell he's really disappointed at the whole situation and from the apparent fact that the company just flat out lied.

So, you have an IP that is the literal most valuable entertainment property ever and you are still reusing assets and you still can't meet the basic franchise expectation to catch 'em all?

Especially considering that Nintendo hit it out of the park with their other tent pole franchises with Odyssey and BotW, flopping out the gate quality-wise with this is hardly a good look.

Pokemon is a massive franchise, but the rights to Pokemon as a whole are actually split between three companies (Nintendo, GameFreak,. The budgeting is overseen by The Pokemon Company, and supposedly GameFreak typically draws the short end of the stick.

I’m not defending their decisions, but it’s not as if they have a huge, unlimited pool of money to work with.

I kept it on for a while because talking to other people is a good way to get different ingredients but turned it off afterwards.

Really liking it so far but my goodness is Hop annoying. I don't know what it is with Nintendo and needlessly annoying characters.

I like Shield cause it has the Ponyta and Larvitar line.

You can look up online which has what though.

I did the same and I was fortunate enough to get a Farfetch'd from a surprise trade. Also received a lv 1 starter via those as well. They are really cool.

Overall it is good. Hop is ridiculously annoying. Team Yell is stupid to put it mildly. But the I love the whole wild region concept. Gyms are good. I do feel like they shouldn't focus on so many new Pokemon with each version. It is painfully obvious that these new ones are so generic.

The game is definitely worth the money. Not a game changer by any means though and frankly I don't think it is as good as Lets Go: Pikachu/Eevee. Maybe by the end of the game I will feel differently, about to get my third badge.

What are some Pokemon to watch out for early on? I went with grookey and just left the mines. Running grookey, gyrados and corvisquire right now with the other three rotating.

I got a Tyrogue that evolved into a Hitmonchan. I’d go major dynamaxing battles and spend a bit of time doing that cause I got an Axew that’s been in my party since the beginning. I don’t entirely know what mines you are talking about though. You can honestly get through this game with whoever.

The Galar Mine, on the way to the first gym

Apparently Eevee spawns right outside those mines. Also I would go back to the Wild area and get a Growlithe or some other fire Pokémon. There’s also a pikachu that you can get that really helped with the water gym for me (I used Sobble) but you have Grookie so you should be good.

Yup I just grabbed an Eevee right outside the mine. It was a PITA, I had it down to a red bar and used 4 regular pokeballs but couldn't get it, luckily I had a great ball that finally worked.

First chance I got I bought like 200 poke balls and then I just went and bought like 300 ultra (I just beat the last gym, I played ALL day today)

also everyone that gets the game before Jan 15 can get a Gigantamax Meowth through their mystery gifts. Just go to the mystery gift menu, get via internet and it should be there.

For me, as someone who’s an avid fan of the series as a whole since Gen 1, I really really like these games. Personally I don’t care about them not including half of the total Dex. They’ve don’t a great of making these games fun and the story engaging. Hop is annoying, but compared to Hau and the gen 6 rivals it’s not as bad. There’s a lot of fun teams you can build straight from the start, personally I’ve been using all the new regional Pokémon just to get a feel for them. And I haven’t been disappointed. The game is great, and all the people that haven so toxiz towards these games is just ridiculous.

Reddit as a community has been incredibly toxic toward this game and pretty often toward anyone supporting the game. It's a hivemind but it includes tens of thousands of people.

Everywhere else seems generally positive, but not super hyped or anything like that.
