I don't get it. What is everyone so upset about? GF has been doing the same thing for 20 years and people kept buying it. Don't tell me it's because they changed it too much.
No, they regressed. They took away the ability to carry forward your Pokemon if not locally available in Galar, which is something that they have been fairly adamant they would never do ever since the disconnect between I believe Gen 2 and 3. They've also removed some really popular moves that were useful in competitive play, such as Hidden Power. All the while they have talked about needing to do this in order to preserve resources to better deliver on other aspects of the game, which people are claiming has not happened. While it isn't necessarily a big deal to me that this is happening, I understand why it is a big deal to others.

I think people expected/hoping for a more ambitious title like BOTW from Gamefreak.

I watched the leaked footage and the game just seems really unpolished and some basic stuff they could have added or worked on improving was not done. I don't know if they're going to patch this game but it's disappointing for sure. Sorry if it's spoiler-ish, give me the tags and let me know and I'll add them. I'm sure many here will enjoy it and can overlook the lack of polish. That's fine but to me it almost feels like GameFreak doesn't know how to make a nice looking game or they were too rushed or lazy to do basic quality control and make improvements. As a company I don't know where GameFreak goes from here. I guess they can keep leaning on the Pokemon name until Nintendo gets pissed off at lower than targeted sales and tries to find another developer.

No GTS in the game is obnoxious. So basically they are hiding global trading behind a paywall, if it is even possible in Home. Honestly, that bothers me more than the cut to the Pokedex. Now we can't even do proper online trading until early next year, and then we get to pay extra for the privilege.

Isn't that more of a Nintendo thing at this point?

No. They didn't have to remove GTS from the game, not sure why that would be on Nintendo.
To be clear, this means you will have to pay for your Switch online subscription IN ADDITION to your Pokémon Home subscription.

You will literally have to pay twice to be able to trade online.

What a joke.

This game is lazy. They literally did the bare minimum to this thing. It's almost incredible that they believed this is a product worth releasing. It doesn't even feel good to play.

As someone who avoided most of the discussion around the game and started looking it up after some really underwhelming hours last night, this **** is bad. It doesn't look great, doesn't run great. It's incredibly average. I don't care about what they took out or any of that, because I'm a casual fan at best and just like the series for a playthrough.

I don't imagine I'm going to finish this one.

Wait, what?

There seems to be no in-game option to trade unless you're friends. The GTS as we know it is presumably only going to be available through Home, which doesn't release until next year. Not sure if it 100% confirmed, but it is being discussed on other message boards like it has been.

EDIT: Reviews seem to be kind of all over the place.

Lots of reviewers blindly giving the game 9/10, 8.5/10, etc. But there are a few that actually discuss issues with the game. Here and here

Eurogamers review seemed to be the most balanced. I'm going in with lowish expectations, hopefully I don't still end up being disappointed.

I have tried to get into Pokemon but just never could.

If this had good word of mouth I would have been excited to give it another try. But it doesn't. And it looks bad.

There are people saying good things about it, its just hard to get past the screaming man babies. Honestly it looks fine. Not amazing but Pokémon never was an amazing franchise and it never will be.

I think this is a big part of where the outcry comes from. The Pokemon brand has always been so much stronger than the actual games. And with the jump in hardware people were hoping the game would improve.

Not that it is unreasonable to expect improvement. But as you say, the games have never been very good.

I bought Pokemon X hoping it could hook me and I might have played it for about 45 minutes total.

Yeah I haven't really been wowed by a Pokemon game since Red/Blue and Snap.
I might give this one a go since I haven't played a Pokemon game in a long time, but I'm not getting my expectations up.

A new Pokemon Snap would be such a runaway success. Its baffling that Nintendo has never followed up on it.

It certainly doesn’t measure up in terms of quality compared to its big brothers Mario and Link. The Switch isn’t exactly a huge step up in terms of hardware compared to its immediate predecessor in the Wii U and sometimes even the Wii.

I get where some people’s concerns lie but they also bitch about every game. LGPE gathered a ton of criticism and it still sold like gang busters.

The Pokemon games have had good, great, and bad iterations just like any other franchise that has the kind of staying power that it has had. Whether people personally enjoy them, or value the small but cumulative changes that have been made to the type of story and games that they are, is a completely different story. To me, HeartGold and SoulSilver are great games, as are Emerald, Platinum, and X/Y. I wasn't a big fan of Sun and Moon or Black and White, but they still are widely regarded as at least good games. People are allowed to have high expectations and be disappointed that they aren't met. That doesn't make them "screaming man babies".

Diehard Pokemon fans are something else, though. Not quite bronies, but getting there. I haven't seen a fanbase up in arms over game changes like this in quite a while. You see CoD get released every year with very little changes yet people don't seem to care.

Call of Duty players complain all the time. Have you gone into a stream at release and looked at the comments? Non stop complaining about how they've made it so that the game is low skill, all the maps suck, this or that gun is over powered. Nothing is ever good about a CoD game at release, and the previous iterations were better, every single time. The Pokemon community, generally, is far more positive about the games than the CoD community. It is just this particular Pokemon game has removed a lot of elements that understandably has upset them.

It looks bad. I cancelled my pre-order. I haven't seen a single area they improved over from Pokemon Lets Go and they had a full year to do something. The game looks unpolished. It's beyond me how any reviewer could score this above a 7 out of 10 current state.

I doubt I'll be back unless another developer takes over which is unlikely. I only came back from Crystal (2000) for Lets Go and Pokemon Go. No noticeable improvements. Corner cutting is noticeable. I'm out.
