It would be silly to trade players at their absolute lowest value. Why trade Carter at the deadline last season when he’ll most likely have a better season this year and will be more attractive to other teams due to less term on his contract? Same goes for most of the “older” guys on the Kings: Toffoli, Martinez, Brown, Clifford, Kovalchuk, Forbort, Quick.

If we’re looking to compete in three years, trading these guys for assets any time between now and then, when their value is at its highest, is a win.

I’d even look into trading Kopitar. He’ll be 32 to start this season. Do we want a 35-year-old center with a large cap hit leading the charge for the future? What if we could trade him to a team like the Habs or Blue Jackets for some quality younger guys?

The time to sell on Kopitar is likely sooner than later, unfortunately.
Or Colorado

Colorado might be willing.

With two firsts in their possession this year, including the fourth pick, they certainly could afford to give up their next four picks for an elite forward.

Imagine adding Marner to go with MacKinnon, Rantanen, Landeskog, plus whoever else they draft, along with Makar and Barrie, holy hell that’s a stacked team.

Maybe the Kings can pry one of those players for Paul LaDue...

More than being critical of Blake I just worry LA is turning into the old boys club that Edmonton is.

I agree, my other concern is that this team has zero identity since firing DL. Just kind of a rudderless ship going nowhere. I don’t know what kind of team Blake is building. Reminds me of when Joe Sakic took over the Avalanche after their cup window closed and learned on the job for 8-9 years and now they are winning again.

So, anyone going to give Mitch Marner an offer sheet?

I personally don't think so. He is priority number one heading into this offseason according to Dubas and I'm sure he will do everything he can to sign him before July 1.

Depending on what type of deal Mitch gets will have a trickle down effect on guys like Kapanen and Johnsson and how the Leafs go about trying to sign them. I think it would be more likely one of those two get an offer sheet.

I would easily cough up a 2nd round pick and offer around $4 million per for Kapanen (although I think he could end up getting closer to $5 million) and/or offer $3.5 - $4 for Johnsson.

Think we need to re visit the Phaneuf for Gaborik deal. Gaborik was on IR all year so the Kings insurance would have helped them out on that salary, correct? He is only a cap hit of 4.875 for two for years. He is 37. Will he ever play again?

Kings have Phaneuf for two more years as well, but at 5.25. He is 34.

I could see Kap being more open to the offer sheet

Kings don't need to worry about Phanuef's cap hit for the next couple of years. They don't need the space while rebuilding/retooling.

Reminds me of when Joe Sakic took over the Avalanche after their cup window closed and learned on the job for 8-9 years and now they are winning again.

The Avs had that weird multi-headed setup for a while. Sakic has only been the only guy for like 5 years. The early years of which he was heavily criticized as just a great former player being named GM of the franchise he played for. Like a good ol' boy.

And yeah, when you have locked in veterans who are there for a paycheck, it's tough to build an identity other than that. There's nobody under 30 on this team that can challenge the hierarchy of the room. You need some world wide recognizable talent for vets to even give you a second thought.

If you add Gaborik + Phaneuf's retention, it's a $6.625m cap hit for Ottawa.

The Kings were trying to win in 17-18 though, and it's yet another example of the seemingly impossible task this organization has had in replacing Voynov for the last 5 years. They needed/wanted another defenseman, had no cap space to do it with, and because DL tried to cheap the cap, can only work with the options they have available to them in the current context.

There's nothing to revisit. Phaneuf isn't stopping anyone worth a damn from being on the team.

We just park Dion in the press box, don't need kids up there not playing with Ontario so close and both squads at the same practice facility.

This year it is somewhat manageable if they do that, but will they? I think he can help the kids transitioning into the NHL but what if Clague or another kid needs to get his shot, will they have room for them? There is already a log jam at D in the organization without even adding other D prospects that need AHL seasoning and NHL experience. Something has to give before camp.

Doughty
Forbort
Martinez
Roy
Phaneuf
Walker
Ladue
MacDermid
------------------------
Clague
Anderson
Phillips
Durzi

What was the 1990/2000 detroit model? You cannot over season in the AHL.
I would rather have Dion in the press box then a kid, and have the kids in the AHL/Juniors

Like the sounds of the second text.

Does Heatley live around LA or something? He was in an alumni game in a kings jersey, and it seems odd that Kovalchuk would reach out to him. Although as I am typing this I think they may have played together in Atlanta.

Yep, they were teammates in Atlanta. Heatley briefly joined the Ducks in his last NHL season, so I guess he liked SoCal enough to stick around.

It is a very good problem to have... A lot of our kids should be on the Reign roster Vilardi included for conditioning if healthy enough... our pipeline could be/turn into exactly what we need right now

Carl Grundstrom - Gabriel Vilardi - Rasmus Kupari(is he coming over?)
Mikey Eyssimont - Jaret A. Dolan - Matt Luff
Blake Lizzote - Drake Rymsha - Sheldon Rempal
Daniel Brickley - Mikey Anderson
Kale Clague
- Austin Strand
Markus Phillips - Sean Durzi

all the bolded could be NHL ready this season or at minimum get in a few games

Not sure why something has to give. That's 8 d-men competing for 7 spots. I believe Walker and Roy can pass thru waivers so they send one down to Ontario. If they both outplay Ladue, just waive him. Ontario should have a really good d-core next season.
