i think Phaneufs NMC prevents him from being waived. Unless he agreed to drop it, which is super doubtful.

The only hope with Phaneuf is that he trains hard this summer, loses upper body bulk that he doesn't need since he doesn't fight or hit anymore and works on his edgework to regain some footspeed. Other than that Dion is on the roster come opening night barring a miracle trade.

Teams need to have a bag man on call.

Anyone still want to sign Panarin to a big, seven year contract? I'm glad that idea is now dead and buried.

In a dream world where LA does not have some horrible contracts and are competing for the division with a healthy Vilardi yes....in reality it has never made any lick of sense.

Dean Lombardi set this franchise back 4-5 years with his attempt to go for one more cup. Picks, prospects traded for nothing and a ton of bad contracts handed out.

Agreed, no complaints on any moves he made pre 2014 everything post 2014 was what caused the downfall. Blake gets crapped on for the current state of the Kings when in my opinion he has done a good job in his time as GM.

some (myself included) were crapping on blake before he became GM. I do not think Blake has done a good or bad job but I do think there were/are better GM's out there.

Blake gets flack for thinking he still had time with the team he had to make a real run. Firing DL should have been the clear signal that there needed to be a reset, but hopefully his focus remains on restructuring to be competitive again as he said he has been. We'll see.

The main criticisms Ive seen of him are the Stevens hiring and the Kovy signing. Stevens was pretty much guaranteed the spot when he was given the title of "Associate Head Coach", Blake moved on him extremely quickly as he was only given 13 games in a season after making the playoffs. The Kovy signing albeit a stretch didnt cost the Kings any picks or prospects so it wasnt a huge blow to the organization. Id like to see what Kovy can do under a contempt coach as he was a point per game player w/ the Kings before ole Willie took over.

This off-season is huge for Blake as he will need to get rid of a few veterans and infuse more youth and talent. I expect a few 0f these long time kings to be traded (Carter, Lewis, Clifford, Toffoli). I fully expect him to buy out Phaneuf as Id rather have a kid on an ELC contract making mistakes and learning than Dion getting paid big money to make them.

Willie D, Kovy (we will see), and Phanuef for Gabby are on Blake.

I saw the sense in Kovy and Dion but they haven’t panned out. Dion was ok the first 20 games. But the Gabby ltir was always a possibility. Kovy May just need a better coach.

In Hindsight, rebuild should have started day 1 of DLs firing.

I had no issue with the Gaborik for Dion deal as it was trading a guy who was not playing eating cap space for a guy who could at least play 10 minutes a night while eating up similar cap hit. Looks bad no that both are likely in the same boat of not contributing and eating up cap.

One thing not mentioned above is I thought Pearson should have returned more than Hagelin.

More than being critical of Blake I just worry LA is turning into the old boys club that Edmonton is.

Looks like Kovy is the Captain of the Russian team.

i still stand by the fact that kovy isnt right for this team. with that said, i think we should ditch the rest of the team and keep kovalchuk

None of player moves Blake has made have hamstrung the organization going forward. Phaneuf for Gabby is a wash. Bad for bad. Kovy was being misused by an idiot coach who put Nate Thompson on the power plan unit instead. I think Kovy will be put to better use this year or will agree to a trade. We have no championship aspirations so if we have to retain salary this year and next for a trade, it's not going to impact anything.

I get the criticism of the WD hire. I don't think Blake hired him to tank. He didn't want to hire anything beyond an interim coach and that doesn't leave many good options. But it's fair game to criticize him for his choice. Again, WD is an idiot.

We've basically been doing a slow rebuild instead of blowing it all up at once. Blake is shedding salary where he can, trading players that need to be traded when he can, acquiring younger assets, keeping draft picks and drafting fairly well. If there's no market for Carter and Quick, that's not on him. But his biggest tests remain ahead.

It would be silly to trade players at their absolute lowest value. Why trade Carter at the deadline last season when he’ll most likely have a better season this year and will be more attractive to other teams due to less term on his contract? Same goes for most of the “older” guys on the Kings: Toffoli, Martinez, Brown, Clifford, Kovalchuk, Forbort, Quick.

If we’re looking to compete in three years, trading these guys for assets any time between now and then, when their value is at its highest, is a win.

I’d even look into trading Kopitar. He’ll be 32 to start this season. Do we want a 35-year-old center with a large cap hit leading the charge for the future? What if we could trade him to a team like the Habs or Blue Jackets for some quality younger guys?

The time to sell on Kopitar is likely sooner than later, unfortunately.
