Finally, a coach who is going to hold some of these crybabies accountable of their effort.

And it is refreshing to hear the organization even admit that their camp and preseason just started off poorly, something a few posters on here severely downplayed.

Glad Toffoli is getting called out.

As for the preseason, I think there's a big difference between a bad camp and a bad preseason. Preseason games have all sorts of non-NHL players playing, and players are regaining their skating legs and timing.

I think fans are overreactionary to preseason games, while management has better insight to the team's focus and practice habits, which were equally bad.

It could be a mix of both. The veterans who played in the preseason last year looked bad in the games from what I remember, so I don't think it was just training camp malaise affecting them. The veterans' poor play in the preseason games certainly carried over into the regular season. That's not to say that training camp habits weren't bad as well.

Kovy, when being played actually produced, Dion did not. I don't see either of them being bought out, too much cash AEG is not going to want to give out for nothing.

Phaneuf was really good for half a dozen games after being traded here. But the wheels fell off last season. Agree that the buyout scenarios aren’t likely.

But you can add trade or LTIR to the future of Carter and IK vs. them discovering the fountain of youth.

overreationary??? last pre-season sucked, and they continued the suck through the entire season.

will it be an overreaction again this pre-season if they go 1-6 again?

Yes, because often regular season records are inverse of the preseason. Otherwise let's go sign Brandon Bochenski, that guy is basically Mario Lemieux in the preseason.

It just happened that last year's shitty preseason was the result of shitty camp-ing rather than simply a shitty preseason. Correlation =/= causation. Especially in this case, when McLellan points out it's going to be a process, they aren't changing everything at once.

Because let's be honest, if they were undefeated in the preseason, everyone would say "well it's just the preseason, let's wait and see," right?

I’m talking about how they performed in preseason, which the record reflected. They were horrendous offensively and defensively, and it carried over. Some couldn’t see the forest from the trees.

I feel this has been discussed quite a bit. Their W/L record in the preseason means f*** all, but it was very apparent how lazy they looked that the team was in trouble. It’s no coincidence they went on to have the shitfest season they did after the horrendous, no effort preseason they had.

Preseason champions were the Detroit Red Wings. Where did they land in the regular season, again? 5th worst? Look how great Edmonton looked, too!

You want to argue how they lost, fair point. You want to throw a fit over a preseason record? It's silly.

I totally agree, I just don't like the over-generalization of "what if THIS preseason ALSO sucks?"

It's more nuanced than 'bad preseason' which I do think people are acknowledging re: last season but it's too general and early to ask that about this season or all preseasons.

Did any of you imagine they would finish 31st?

People weren't just simply harping on the preseason record, there were legit concerns about how they looked and performed. I get that it's preseason, but playing like they didn't care and showing little to no chemistry on the ice continued to snowball and they played like they gave zero f***s. As the organization has alluded, those bad habits from camp and preseason carried on and continued on throughout the regular season.

The concerns about their performance was being questioned before the preseason and it was a major issue afterwards. It was a reflection of the team we were going to see. Those who couldn't see these concerns simply chose to ignore them.

I don't care if the Kings are dead last in standings. I just want a lot more effort.

The good thing with Kovalchuk is that he has no signing bonus on July 1st, 2020, and he's only going to get $4.25m actual dollars next year. Those things make him easier to deal after this season. The bad part is that he gets to pick 7 teams to be traded to. Assuming he doesn't go back to the KHL, and assuming the 7 teams he would want to go to are good, those things will make him more difficult to trade. He's here for at least 1 more year, and only then will someone maybe take a chance on a 37 year old winger, and that's only if he's productive this year.

I wonder if Florida would fit the bill? They got Hoffman and Dadonov coming off the books, but might not be able to keep both. In house replacements like Tippett and Denisenko might still be a year away (latter might still have contractual obligations in Russia).

With Forbort and Ladue out for training camp and Kovys comments that he prefers to play with Kopi and did good on that line then WD took him off . Also that Luc and Blake think it would be ideal for Iaffalo to play bottom 6 and he would be perfect for modern NHL bottom 6. I think Tmac starts with

Kovy-Kopitar-Brown
Grundstrom-Kempe-Carter
Iaffalo-Prokhorkin-Toffoli
Wagner-JAD-Clifford
Lewis

Anderson-Doughty
Clague-Martinez
Ryan-Walker
Roy

I have no Doubt that Carts bounces back and if Prokhorkin plays his game I love our forward lineup. This is how you run four lines . The defense can get ugly but hopefully our youngsters perform like many other rookies throughout the league .

I'd say that's not a bad name. The whole tax thing too. Won't just depend on how many goals IK can score, but the Panthers would really have to at least make the playoffs this year. If they bomb again, not sure IK would be the move to make. Maybe Dallas would be the same type of situation, since they're kind of desperate to win today with Benn at 30. Barkov just turned 24 the other day, so the Panthers have some more time.

I'm guessing MacDermid and Brickley make the team before Anderson and Clague. Certainly if they're just place holders until Forbort gets healthy. If Walker and Roy are both making the team, there's no reason to put Martinez on the right side, where we know he's not as good. Amadio before JAD.

Blake on Clague, defensive rotation, more from SOTF; Bouma to camp on PTO - LA Kings Insider

Blake acknowledged that waivers will play a factor in how the defense shapes up out of training camp. LaDue, Kurtis MacDermid and Joakim Ryan would have to pass through waivers to be assigned to Ontario, while Sean Walker, Matt Roy, Daniel Brickley, Anderson and Clague are among the waiver-exempt defenders.

“I’ve got to set that roster, and we’re going to look at different things there. I don’t want to be in a position to rush any of these young players, and that might be to kind of the fact that there hasn’t been a lot of moves was that I want to make sure some of these young guys can play, and there’s no need to rush ‘em. The one thing I did learn the past few years here is you have to be prepared enough to be able to step in and play in the NHL, and then you’ve got to be able to win the NHL. But at the same time, that’s part of that whole process, and we’re not going to rush these kids.”

I'd say with that general idea, it's likely there will be fewer 18-21 year old players on the roster than more of them.

I've given up hope on TT.

I think a trade a couple of years ago would have been way better for all parties involved (atleast as it relates to TT's on ice career). I think alot of fans sometimes worry about guys living the beach life, getting caught up in the LA scene etc. and I would say in 99% of those cases it's unwarranted, but I think that is exactly what happened to TT. He got his money and his trophy wife and just stopped caring. I hate to say that, because I don't know for certain but it just seems like thats the case with this player. Some guys are motivated because they are ultra competitive and want to be the best, some are motivated to get an even bigger contract and some are just content with their mid-level deals and have no desire to be better or make more.

Being traded may have been the wake-up call to atleast put in the effort. Toffoli was blessed with great hands, and 25-30 years ago he would have been a way better player in the league, but the way the games played with the focus on speed and the need to be in the gym basically year round to keep up with your peers doesn't suit TT's skillset or work ethic.

I agree for the most part. Granted, players can always recover. I wanted Toffoli gone before Pearson to be honest, though. Back in 2017-18 season, when both were putting up pedestrian numbers, I just saw Pearson was having worse luck than Toffoli, but still creating more than him.

Even though they're both the same age, Toffoli was in the org longer than Pearson but devolved into a bigger passenger. He was one I constantly thought of when I brought up how the Kings lacked the "next wave" of leadership.

Either way, I just hope it works out for the best. Either Toffoli gets better or the Kings cut their losses with him.

Can't imagine he gets another contract with the Kings. Assuming all goes as everyone is expecting, he'll be long gone by the time he turns 28. Even if he puts up 40 goals, you just have to sell high. Unless those 40 goals somehow keep the team in the playoff race, and then maybe you keep him to make the playoffs, but even then, maybe you deal him anyway. That's probably not likely, as there are very few GMs anywhere that would trade a guy producing like that on a team headed to the playoffs.

I think Blake has made his choice though. Not sure what Toffoli could do that would allow him to remain here beyond the end of this season. If he does have a good year, he'll be asking for more than the $4.8m in cash he's making, and of course you can't give him more. Plus he's the young guy for the old core, and he's not the bridge between the old core slowly retiring, and what we hope is the next wave of potential. He's not the veteran leader type. It started with Pearson, then Muzzin, and he has to be part of that next chipping away from 2012 and 2014. Slowly but surely, there's at least one guy from those days that will be gone every year(other than Doughty). It's just going to take a while.

If MacDermid and Brickley make the team before Clague and Anderson then Blake doesn’t know how to ice a competitive team in the modern NHL and it goes against everything they have been saying . MacDermid doesn’t belong anywhere in the NHL he sucks and there are million players like him. He won’t be nothing more than an AHLer and that won’t even last long . Just because he can fight don’t mean squat nowadays . Brickley didn’t seem ready last year and I doubt he’s improved that much in a year plus he’s 24 I believe . Clague is not going to be an elite defender but he will be a top 4 PP QB and we need the youngsters like himself to get ice time and experience . Anderson has a strong chance to make it IMO because of that . Seems to be poised and skilled enough to play in the NHL . Since these two might be part of our future plans I’d rather them make it sooner rather than later . Just my two cents
