If MacDermid and Brickley make the team before Clague and Anderson then Blake doesn’t know how to ice a competitive team in the modern NHL and it goes against everything they have been saying . MacDermid doesn’t belong anywhere in the NHL he sucks and there are million players like him. He won’t be nothing more than an AHLer and that won’t even last long . Just because he can fight don’t mean squat nowadays . Brickley didn’t seem ready last year and I doubt he’s improved that much in a year plus he’s 24 I believe . Clague is not going to be an elite defender but he will be a top 4 PP QB and we need the youngsters like himself to get ice time and experience . Anderson has a strong chance to make it IMO because of that . Seems to be poised and skilled enough to play in the NHL . Since these two might be part of our future plans I’d rather them make it sooner rather than later . Just my two cents

You act as if the goal of this season is to win the Cup while, at the same time, believing that Anderson should simply jump from the NCAA straight to the pros.

Absolutely nothing wrong with both of them starting in Ontario unless they are bonkers in camp.

What's the rush?

When we get closer to opening night, i'm gonna take a poll and see what everyone thinks is going to happen this season.

My answer won't change.

They'll challenge for a wild card spot and they'll fall short with 80-something points. Black hole season on rebound seasons from the vets and growth from the youth but they can't outscore their shitty defensive holes (#2-#3 are all but vacant, god bless Martinez for trying) even with Doughty playing 50 minutes a game.

Everyone who is not waiver exempt is going to start camp penciled into the team, its up to the kids to win (not just edge out) a spot over one of those guys. I think that they want the kids to get some chemistry together in the minors and then slowly come up.

By next season there could easily be 6-8 players gone that are on the team now, and hopefully Blake can get other assets for them when they go.

I think its one thing to lose in the preseasons, and another to not show up at all.

The Kings didn't show up and most rational people were feeling uneasy about that fact. Then they proceeded to now show up at all.

The Kings season will be determined on whether or not Doughty and/or kopitar suck. If carter is off the second line then thats good news.

Anybody who can correctly predict how this season goes deserves an award. The Kings are like that cooler full of alcohol and juices at a party right now. It looks like it could be good but then you start thinking about has that cooler been cleaned properly? What kind of alcohol was poured in there? Then you scoop up a cup anyway, take a drink and find out the next morning.

No but Blake and Luc said at SOTF that the goal is to support the current core with other skilled young pieces to win the cup again. What better way then to give them a taste of the NHL . MacDermid and Brickley are dime a dozen players and not part of future plans , what’s to say Anderson and Clague won’t be up to par by seasons end . Look at Mcavoy , Carlo and million others who made the jump strate from junior or college to NHL and are stars now . Those are the teams who will stay good consistently and create a winning culture . It’s a younger mans NHL now sooner we adapt the sooner we get back to our winning ways. Anderson’s numbers are better than Mcavoys by the way at their ages .

In reality every business evolves and you must adapt to stay up to par and consistent , good average serviceable players are leaving the league by their early 30s. These young players are taking over and it’s good for the Grish of the sport. We cant waste few more productive Kopi years and Doughty years by being scared to play the kids . I think Blake and Co see this and will play them if need be . Support and surround the core with good youngsters who will play their role like Turcotte Kupari JAD Anderson next year and few others possibly and watch this team win a cup or 2 by the time Kopi and it Brown retire.

I agree with your post. ..but unfortunately the players that Blake can trade anytime between now and the deadline: Toffoli, Carter, Kovalchuk, Lewis, Maritnez, Quick, Forbort...not a sinlge one can fetch a #1 pick and it would take a great year for Quick, Martinez, or Toffoli to garner a 2nd round pick. Muzzin was 29 and on a good contract and having a pretty good season, so Blake cashed in with a very good deal: #1, Grundstrom and Durzi.Who on this roster (ones without no trade clause) can fetch something like that? No one. The future is: Turcotte, Kupari, JAD, Grundstrom, Thomas, Kaliyev, Fagemo, Anderson, Durzi, Clague, Petersen, and the 2020 #1 pick. And possible others like Sodergran, Strand, etc. The most value Blake has for dealing that other GMs would want, are players you don't want to deal, like Kupari, JAD, Anderson, 2020#1, etc. These are what other GMs will want - NOT Carter, Kovalchuk, Lewis, etc. Just reality. The good thing is, at least there are 10+ solid prospects - many with good NHL futures. May as well hope all of these young players have great seasons, wherever they are playing and get closer to the NHL, get a top 5 overall pick (the Kings selection) and see these 7 gone by end of yr: Carter, TT, Lewis, Martinez, Kovalchuk, Quick, Forbort.

Teams overpay every year at the deadline, hopefully Blake can maximize the assets he has. If all he gets are third round picks, then maybe he can take two of them and move up for player they like. An asset is an asset, can be a 1st round pick or a 6th, whatever he can get for someone who we won't re-sign or won't play anymore is one more pick we didn't have before.

And for the most part, the value for most of these guys will never be lower ( I hope) under a new coach and a new system maybe they can not suck enough to trade off for higher picks and prospects.

Amen.

I remember being told over and over and over that Muzzin wouldn't even fetch a 1st at the deadline (*cough* @tomd let's get a beer!). Reality is values are raised when teams are more desperate.

Martinez won't pull as much as Muzzin but he's most certainly worth a late 1st at the deadline or a high 2nd and an additional asset. The others....well, depends on how they play. But those extra picks are chips/currency on their own. Don't sleep on the idea that Toffoli and Lewis would be rentals, too--if they play well this year, teams aren't really caring what they do next year or further--if TT has 20+ goals at the deadline, he's worth a 1st. Quick and Carter are more wild cards because of age, injury, and term.

Edit: whoa, didn't even realize Forbort would be a rental. As well as Clifford, Joakim Ryan, LaDue.

Keep in mind, we have 49/50 contracts on the books for this season.

Some of our prospects may not survive the whole thing when Blake starts selling off mid-late season.

Came back to edit to say the same thing haha.

It depends on how well the kids play. If they struggle and the Kings insist on playing them in the NHL, it's a good way to wreck a young player's confidence.

The current core is done though, and the cavalry isn't going to arrive in time.

Exactly.

If everything goes perfectly for Blake's rebuild (meaning we hit big on Turcotte, Kupari, our 2020 1st, AND a top four defenseman prospect), Doughty and Kopitar may still be around playing Joe Thornton-like roles for a younger core. But they will no longer be considered core. Maybe Doughty will, but that really depends on how he ages throughout the next 3-4 years.

Just saying they don't need that taste in October. It's a long season.

Agreed.

If Anderson, Clague, JAD, Kupari, etc clearly outclass the waiver eligible guys then give them a go from the start.

If it's close, let them develop and gain confidence in Ontario.

I don't think it's fear of playing young players, it's about putting them in the best position to succeed. Boston can bring in a young guy and insulate him cuz they're good, deep team. We are in a transition period (both playing style and personnel). Let the borderline, waiver eligible get thrown to the wolves. The higher end guys can get a cup of coffee later in the season.

A lot could depend on how October goes. If they start slow again, are they going to go down with a whimper again? Do they have any bounce back left? 1-8 in the playoffs, whatever the record is in the few big regular season games.

Start in western Canada. Come home for 5 against 4 playoff teams from last year, and 1 against a non-playoff team that beat them 5-1 in LA last year. Then 4 on the road. Then end the month at home against the Canucks. That's not easy. If they start 5-7-1, do they have it in them to recover? Where's the confidence going to come from? Then 9 of 14 in Nov are at home. From Nov 12th to Dec 4th, they leave California once, and that's to play a road game in Arizona.
