Gabriel Vilardi is not on the Kings’ roster. The first-round pick from 2017 continues to rehabilitate a back injury and Kings general manager Rob Blake said in an email Thursday that there is no update. (08/22/2019)

not sure if I would go as far as saying wasted pick as he was worth the gamble, however Necas would look mighty good right now

Anderson-Dolan has spent almost all of his summer training with a group of veterans at the Kings’ practice facility in El Segundo — workout sessions that featured a mixture of conditioning and strengthening — and he took two weeks off from training after the Chiefs’ season ended.

“He played a prominent role on that (Spokane) team and continued it with a little more offense in the playoffs,” Blake said. “He’s committed himself again this summer to training and doing all the right things. Again, that’s the character part that really impresses me.”

were his injuries known ahead of the draft? i'm asking because i'm not familiar with Vilardi's development in the juniors... do you know if he had prior back issues?

God I love this ****ing kid.

Even if they don't win a Cup, it will be insanely easy to root for Turcotte, JAD, and Bjornfot at the VERY least.

our prospect pool is hot, and all this without drafting once in the top 3

if the gods are smiling down on us and we do land Lafreniere, i'm set and ready to wreak havoc!

yeah, but we'll also cheer for any **** they put on the ice.

fingers crossed..... per usual

Oh for sure. We're gluttons for punishment anyway.

I guess I'm just saying there shouldn't be any questions of heart/effort. I can stomach a 'bad' team that's spilling their guts.

He had what non-chronic injuries his draft year and then dominated in the playoffs. Problem was he couldn't do any lower-body related combine work prior to the draft.

With his skill set, the main reason he dropped was because teams were scared. If you are drafting 5th overall, you are going to be more scared than Blake at #11. Teams were scared of Kopitar's heritage at #5 but the Kings weren't at #11. Sure, maybe some teams were in love with "New NHL Speed" so they had them him lower on their respective boards but, really, it came down to injury concerns.

I've been adamant that he dropped because of the injury concerns but I still don't fault Blake for taking him where they did. A team devoid of top-flight talent had a Top 5 rated guy sitting there at #11, a guy that should have most likely been playing NHL minutes last season to help a team that Blake thought was still a contender at the time he picked Vilardi.

To be fair to Blake, Vilardi has been a complete stud when he's been able to play. It is one thing to be injury-prone and a whole other thing to be a teenager that might have to stop playing sports because of some weird back shit. The thing we'll never know is if other team's doctors could sniff out potential chronic issues at the combine/testing and the Kings just didn't.

A guy that I went to high school has a theory about GV:
Gabe Vilardi Injury Update - A New Theory - Wicked Deke

Very interesting if true. He might just need some time to get past this. Given the fact the Kings aren’t going anywhere this year, I’m ok with them being patient. If he can get healthy, he might be able to become the dominant player we need. Add in Turcotte and a few other forwards, we have the front line built. If Anderson, Durzi and Bjornfot develop, our D looks good.

And, if we get a top 3 pick after this year, I really like where the team is going.

You still care enough? The consistent decreasing number of games he's played for the last 4 years, and never practicing in any camps, hasn't worn you down by now? Kudos I guess.

Its articles like this that makes me think he'll make the team out of camp. He already got 5 games last year and he seems determined to make an impact right away.

There are 9, if not 10 forwards that are guaranteed to be on the roster. As much as nobody wants to see it, the veterans are still going to get their regular shifts. They're still paying them a ton of money. Do we really want to see JAD on the 4th line with Clifford and Lewis? Just let him develop in Ontario for a year. More than enough minutes down there to get. He's not even 20 yet. There is no rush with him, or any of the other young guys with potential.

Not disagreeing, but its a long season. If he's clearly not cut out for the NHL send him down early and get some minutes. Usually I'm not in favor of sending guys up and down during the season, but I think he's a guy that I would want to start to integrate sooner and establish the culture and set the standard. And to be honest I think some of the vets could learn a thing or two from him.

Recent drafting has made Vilardi just gravy at this point. It doesn't look great right now, but who knows what will happen. If he does heal up, it's going to be some good f***ing gravy though.

I'm searching for what's wrong with Gabe. There's no answers.

Google this:

"spinal injuries elite adolescent athletes"

You should get plenty of hits on that. Then pick one from the National Institute of Health (NIH) titled "Low Back Pain In Young Athletes." That was my starting point.

Here is the only interview with Gabe Vilardi that I have been able to find where he talks about his chronic back condition. There are some interesting quotes. This one in particular:

“It’s been ongoing for a while, so nothing’s really changed,” Vilardi, who arrived home in time for the holidays, said of his injury. “I just want to take some time off and make sure I’m 100 per cent before I play because, obviously, I haven’t been feeling so well, so I’m going to take some time here and do my rehab. I’ve got a plan in place with the Kings, and I’ll stick to that for now.”

I apologize if this link has already been posted before. I wrote the spondylolysis theory article on Vilardi and just joined HFBoards today. If anyone has any questions about how I came to the conclusion I did, I will try my best to answer.

Fronts' Vilardi focuses on rehab, not what could have been

Assuming Vilardi does come back to play at some point and reaches the level we hope he can, taking a couple years off from hockey to heal up could be a positive. Most of these kids have years of physical and mental fatigue by the time they get to the pros.
