Oh sheet that is too bad. No way Pens walk away from two years. Bad management for extending him after his recent playoff failures.
 
Sullivan's owed, what, like $10 million for the final two years of his deal? FSG is reportedly worth more than $13 billion collectively, as of October. It's not about money.

I just think it's a case of them not knowing a damn thing about hockey, combined with not really giving a shit beyond the "hey cool we own another ~thing~, hopefully when we sell it we make a big profit in a few years" aspect.

I genuinely do think they believe Sullivan's a top tier coach, and I think they believe Dubas is some young GM prodigy. Given how they immediately tossed aside weeks of interviews with other GMs in order to drop everything and pursue their guy in Dubas, I have to imagine they'd side with him if Dubas wanted to fire Sully. I just don't think Dubas wants to fire Sullivan. /shrug

Doubt FSG cares. If Sully signs somewhere else after leaving whatever money on his contract would be cleared. Doubtful he would be unemployed unless he wanted to be.

Honestly, this might be a decent thing. With where we are at as a team, Sullivan isn't going to make a difference. But hopefully by the 2027-2028 season, we are on the upswing. Perfect time for us to pick up a new coach to forge the core.

I'm not sure the exact details on his contract. He may have it in there that he's still owed his money even if he signs somewhere else. Even so, I still doubt money is the reason he's still here. Either they get out of his contract if/when he's hired (and I think you're right, he won't be out of work longer than he wants to be), or the money's such a pittance it doesn't matter.

That would be unlikely. Its why teams grant permission to coaches to interview for others jobs after they are fired. I think if the money is equal to or greater than the previous contract, its erased. Friedman has talked about this before.

That timeline looks about right to me. I wouldn't be surprised if he was let go in the summer of '26 though.

Mike Sullivan's contract is a complete non-factor in his future as Penguins coach. FSG ate the Burke/Hextall contracts while giving Dubas a 7-year deal and allowing him to substantially build up the front office.

I don't know where this notion comes from that FSG is a bunch of cheapskates, but they're not. Time will tell whether they're actually good owners or bad, but they're not cheap.

I don't know that the jury's still out on FSG being good or bad owners tbh. At best, they're aloof and don't know shit about hockey. At worst, they don't care at all. We'll see how things end up looking back on their ownership tenure but the first three years have been pretty dogshit. It's not even the losses either, it's pretending this team is anything but an extreme afterthought anymore, all the while praising Sullivan as some coaching legend.

Gimme a couple seasons of Mike Johnston hockey, trade Rust, Rakell and EK this summer, and settle in to chase McKenna and Dupont baybeeeeee.

Really though, I don't give a shit about Sully anymore, man. He's here through the Olympics imo. Just hope he doesn't stunt the development of any of the prospects by the time he's out the door.

Thing is if they don’t know anything about hockey, fine. What they do understand is results and finances. Sullivan isn’t getting the results and hasn’t since 2018 and the Pens have had awful attendance the last 3 seasons and it’s going to get worse when Sid and the others aren’t good enough to brag about anymore and that can come next year with these things, it’s never a given.

They have fired coaches for not performing with their MLB team and I am sure they can understand that at the end of the day if the same bloke coaching hasn’t led them to anything good in almost a decade, he isn’t the one to keep the job hoping it will change.

There are a lot of coaching vacancies that will pop up and Sullivan will get hired asap, waiting too late for other teams to hire and firing Sullivan weeks too late would be the issue. I know they are super high on Dubas, he was who they wanted even while they interviewed top GM candidates that were available while Kyle had his shit with Toronto brewing before he walked away from them.

They inherited Sullivan and they like him because of…Boston. But I think if Dubas has a sack, he can push to fire Sullivan and they will say ok. Because like everyone knows, FSG desperately wanted Dubas. They didn’t hire Sullivan but they love him, Dubas has the ability to do it.

It’s just, does he have the guts to do it?

Dubas likes Sullivan too. And I don't think Dubas cares that the Pens stink since he didn't expect to contend this year anyways.

Maybe that changes if the Pens start trying to make the playoffs again and still stink, but who knows when Dubas plans to make that pivot. I doubt it's this off season so Sully is likely safe for one more year at least.

I can take see this team sucking, but I can't take see them playing stupid Sullivan's hockey anymore.

If this franchise had any balls, he’d be gone this morning.

I’m reminded of a snippet from the old “Crosby: On The Ice And Beyond” DVD from back in the day.

When narrating over the part where we just lost in the SCF to Detroit in ‘08, Sid basically says “losing stinks….it really does.”

Where’d that guy go?? Why is Sid so content now with playing for a guy who’se stupidity and arrogance has cost him now 3 consecutive years of playoff time?? Not to mention multiple first round exits before that. 🙄🙄🙄

Christ, if we had a coach worth even half a shit…I have no doubt Sid would’ve cracked 100 points this year.

Firing Sullivan may not make much of a difference in regards to where the Penguins finish in the 2025-26 standings, but it will certainly make a difference in regards to how the younger players progress. If he defaults to the usual veteran stiffs and only plays the young players 4-5 minutes a night (or scratches them), then he shouldn't be this team's coach moving forward.

Arthur Staple, who is pretty tapped into the Rangers, says that Mike Sullivan has been Chris Drury's top choice the last two NY coaching searches. But Sullivan has never been available.

Probably the only hope for a coaching change is for something to happen here.
