If I were Calgary, I'd rather sign a UFA as a filler and keep the pick.

Trading away a first for 300k in cap space and a bottom 4 defenseman doesn't seem like a very wise move, especially since there's a whole season to see how things develop.

How about if we retain $2 mm of AMart's salary? There are a lot of teams in Cap hell right now. We should be able to secure a #1 pick in exchange for taking on a bad contract for a year.

One of our move valuable assets is the ability to provide cap relief- for an overpayment for the other team of course.
Retaining salary on AMart in order to get a first round pick is what Blake should be doing.

One of the better UFA signings in Kings history. The pairing of Schneider and Blake was short lived, but man were they awesome together. Those two were deadly on the point on the PP.

That happened on 8/13? Damn. Also taken in the expansion draft by the Jackets just for the compensation pick, as he wasn't expected to sign there. The pre-cap days were different. Had one of his best years with the Kings though. He ended up being what Duchesne was supposed to be a few years earlier.

The problem with retaining, I assume, is the extra year. For a franchise that has wasted a lot of money recently, is paying out $2m in 20-21 for yet another guy not to be here something they want to do?

I don't think Calgary is desperate yet. They might be looking for a defenseman, but GMs are always looking. And it's August. They currently have 5 guys that played all year with the team. What if they take a step back this year? What if their top 5 scorers don't all have career years at the same time again? They want to trade maybe a mid 1st for Martinez? They just got spanked in the 1st round. They're not a lock for anything yet.

It'll be the same thing with Muzzin in terms of when he goes. The return likely won't be as potentially good, but closer to the deadline, if then. The trade chips the Kings have are role players that nobody needs for October, or guys coming off essentially their worst seasons. And most of them are old to boot. There's a reason Blake hasn't made a trade since the deadline.

I believe the Willie Mitchell signing was also a late August transaction. I get why it took him a while to sign given the reluctance over his concussions, but Schneider being unsigned so late into free agency was unusual. The Kings sure did benefit from adding him though. Seems like him and Lubo were the last two competent pointmen this team had on the PP.

This season will be about seeing if even one of LaDue, Walker, Roy, or MacDermid are NHL level talent worth investing in for the future.

Walker's rapid improvement really surprised me, reminded me of Martinez after his first callup. Looks like a player of some sort.

LaDue still a bit of a wild card but I'm also curious how this whole set of righties does away from Phaneuf.

Roy...I don't think he has 'it.' Not enough offense to cover his lack of defense.

MacDermid suddenly stopped improving it seems but last year was a shit show so still hoping. He seems like he could be a good #7 at least since he brings something more unique.

LaDue isn’t that much of a wildcard IMO, he’s at best a remote possibility as a legit top 6 d-man. It would be a huge disappointment if Walker and Roy don’t head into the season ahead of him in the depth chart. The only way LaDue should get anything other than waived is if they think Walker/Roy would develop better playing in all situations in the AHL but I just don’t see it. Don’t get me wrong I hope I’m wrong but I think LaDues best chance is others disappointing.

LaDue's got the one way deal, so he's going to get his chance, and probably has a spot to lose because of it. The reality is that all 3 of those guys likely aren't going to turn into anything. One of them will be 27 before he might get regular shifts, one of them was a 7th round pick, and another was a college free agent from the GM's alma mater, and they're all in the mid 20's. Who are we talking about here?

That's what this year is about though. They've got the untradeable veterans, some promising youth, but it's on the very young side, and then just a bunch of dudes that play hockey in the middle. The 19-20 season is about hopefully finding a diamond in that middle rough, even if it's just another Iafallo type.

I gotta take the bait any time I see Karalahti's name: Edmonton Oilers at Los Angeles Kings Box Score — December 30, 1999 | Hockey-Reference.com

It was Christmas break 1999 and I was home from college. I was busy with classes to watch too much hockey, so this was my first time seeing Karalahti play (it looks like he debuted earlier that month). He scored 2 goals (one on a MacInnis-esque slapper), played 25 minutes, and threw a couple nice hits. I thought immediately that he was a star in the making. I had joined a keeper league a few months earlier (which is still running amazingly) and decided I needed to get Karalahti. Ended up trading another older rookie for Karalahti, some guy named Brian Rafalski.

Whoops.

It's great that he understands it's likely AHL for him, but he's still coming over.

Also, did anyone use google translate on this?

"After JVM it became more concrete and they wanted me over. It got a little hard, it got a little much in the skull then, he explains when we see you."
