The Kings should only move Martinez if someone overpays with a 1st rounder or top prospect. You still need a good vet D to help mentor the younger D.

I don't think a 1st or top prospect is a over payment. Look at what Muzzin got. I think Jazz hands is a slight drop in quality and imo on just as good of a contract signed for the extra year. Those type of defense man have value. However I wouldn't make the trade till you see what the kids can do this year. If someone shows they can take over his mins than u can trade him not before.

Article up on the hockey writers speculating that Dmitri Jaskin is a PTO fit for LA.

ANALYSIS: The Kings already signed a somewhat similar Czech forward in Martin Frk, but Jaskin could still be worth a look for Los Angeles. He could be an upgrade on some of the Kings’ depth wingers and would keep their prospects developing in the AHL rather than being rushed to the NHL.

Are the Kings still considering moving Martinez? If so, what for?

I'm sure they'll do it at some point, but Martinez is a good warm body for now. Like was said, unless it's an offer you can't refuse, he can at least eat some minutes for a bad team. Since nothing happened at the draft, I wouldn't expect anything to happen until at least the deadline. Martinez is one of the last semi-valuable vets the Kings have, so you want that playoff desperation from other teams, not whatever August is.

There's also M. Kempe as well.

There's the 9 locks at F, plus Prokhorkin, then M.Kempe and Frk, so that's 12 already. If Amadio isn't in the every day mix by now at age 23, then he's as good an option as Jaskin. Then Wagner, Luff, Grundstrom. That's 16. At least 2 won't be here, maybe 3. As a PTO, it couldn't hurt, but there's really no reason to do it. If the Kings have anything, it's depth forwards that can just kill time. It's a team overflowing with non-potential.

That the trade happened prior to the internet as we know it, gives it a certain mystique. It wouldn't be the same if it happened today. All the rumors around the Final of things already starting behind the scenes probably would've been known at the time. The trade likely doesn't happen in August either. Different time, different world.

And then the complete opposite happened in 1995-96, which was around the time I signed up to my first internet service provider and followed along the Gretzky trade rumors from around December right through February when the trade finally took place. So much for those early rumors that suggested Chris Pronger as a player the Kings would receive.

Same. Rangers, Blues, Wings, I'm sure the Leafs were in the rumor mix too. The usual suspects back then. I can remember Laperriere's name popping up while he was with the Blues that year too, but then he got traded to the Rangers, and I was a teenager and said, ok, now what?

You remember correctly, although I don't recall what names were bandied about with regards to who the Leafs or Wings would offer, but supposedly the package the Rangers were offering turned out pretty close to what the Kings would end up with later on when they dealt Jari Kurri, Marty McSorley and Shane Churla to them for Mattias Norstrom, Ian Laperriere, Ray Ferraro and Nathan LaFayette. The other name rumored to be coming to the Kings in return for Gretzky was Luc Robitaille, and Taylor would make that happen a year later.

The Blues were always linked to Gretzky since the season started. The initial reports were Gretzky wanted the Kings to get Hull, who was disgruntled in St. Louis playing under Mike Keenan.

As the Kings struggled under new ownership, Gretzky started to doubt their commitment towards building a winner and wanted the Kings to either add some help in the form of a goal scorer (Hull) and a puck rushing defenseman (Housley was a name thrown out there).

When that didn't happen, then the trade rumors started to pick up before the end of 1995, and I vividly recall the two names that kept being brought up were Chris Pronger and Roman Vopat, who would wind up being the "gem" that they received from the Blues alongside Craig Johnson and Patrice Tardif.

I'm not sure which return wound up being worse: what the Kings received for Gretzky or what the Penguins received for Jagr? The Kings did far better with the Rangers trade, so at least that worked out for quite a few years.

That 96 Blues team was loaded with ex-Oilers. The problem is they ran into the beginning of the Red Wings dynasty.

I believe they also had the oldest team in the league. The only player under 26 on that roster was Chris Pronger, and they had something like four regulars who were under 30. The Kings sure had slim pickings when it came to what pool of prospects to choose from who were in the Blues' system.

Hmm, Calgary now needs a left shot D-man due to an injury NHL Rumors - ProHockeyRumors.com. They also need Cap relief to sign Tkachuk and they are also in their Cup window. How about Martinez for Frolik and a 1st? Calgary saves $300 k on the Cap and gets a guy signed for two more years. We can flip Frolik at the deadline for a 3rd- not a bad return for Alec. Just a thought.

That injury really hurt them. Prior to that, they were looking to move Brodie to get $$ for Tzachuk, now that option's gone. Treviling said yesterday he is seeking out external help for the defense, so he's making calls. It's just a matter of what they can afford. A little of 7M left and 2 contracts to sign.

That red glowing 5.2M mistake of Lucic is killing them.

I would jump at this.. I have a feeling they're going to imploded and miss the PO's... If we do it, I would push for zero protections on that pick

I hope Amart has that much value, but I'm skeptical. The Kings could potentially offer salary retention as well.

If I were Calgary, I'd rather sign a UFA as a filler and keep the pick.

Trading away a first for 300k in cap space and a bottom 4 defenseman doesn't seem like a very wise move, especially since there's a whole season to see how things develop.
