I know the last thing this team needs is another player not bought in, but assuming McLellan and co. can get things at least back to respectability, would anyone have any interest in Josh Ho-Sang? He seems like someone still young enough to put things together but has been being passed on the Islanders depth chart. It'd be nice to pry a player like Joseph or Verhaeghe from Tampa too as a result of their roster being full.

It would also be nice to be on the lookout for cap dump + sweetener deals. I know we probably won't end with Teravainen a la the Bickell cap dump, but one can hope

No interest in Ho-Sang. It doesn't seem like he's learned much from his junior days.

This is exactly what the Kings should have started doing in the summer of 2016 when it was apparent the championship years were over and a massive rebuild was needed. Just scoop up a few lottery tickets as possible and hope you hit on one of them.

The Kings have for a number of years focused on certain types of players. Whether they were right in this assessment the Kings have stuck to their guns-see Iafallo on the top line. See Lewis and Clifford still on the team. Ho Sang isn't the Kings type of player.

"I can't put a measure on how personally motivated I am for this season," Doughty said. "Last season was a disappointment and a big embarrassment. I'm expected to be one of the best guys on my team and a leader. I'm really looking forward to bringing us back to where we need to be. My determination is going to be at (the) maximum."

The Kings roster is pretty full too. They can fill both Kings and Reign rosters without a problem. If you can get Ho-Sang for another nobody like Brad Morrison, or Martin Frk, or something like that, then sure, why not. They've got plenty of their own young guys that need ice time in Ontario though. No real need to go out of your way to get Ho-Sang.

Since they weren't really in the mix for Marleau, if getting rid of Carter was part of the deal, which wouldn't have made sense for the Leafs, doesn't seem like they'll be doing anything involving cap dumps until maybe the deadline.

Doughty is serious this time. He turned his determination up to 11.

One interesting thing with the remaining Cup roster is that they no longer have any benefit of the doubt. Lombardi sort of started that after 2016 when he didn't invest in the team, and Blake even continued that in 2017. Gave them another chance in 2018, it completely blew up in everyone's faces, and now...

The Kings are gonna face a lot of backup goaltenders and relaxed teams. I think we will know if they are back in the pre season and the first 10 games. If you see any of the **** that happened last season early on the Kings are in deep trouble. I want to see fast starts, guys attacking the middle of the ice and defensemen pinching right out of the gate.

That's been my stance for awhile, too. I don't blame management for still trying to squeeze in more run in 14/15 and 15/16.

But the way they went out in 15/16 should have made it clear to everyone that the glory days were 100% over. Their effort throughout March/April and that first round series against the Sharks was absolutely pathetic.

Should have been full rebuild mode starting in the summer of 2016.

What GM in this league goes full rebuild after a 102pt season?

Honestly, I am really looking forward to this season. One year ago at this time, most everyone thought the Kings would at least be making the playoffs. Sure, Vegas swept them, but Doughty was suspended one of them and all 4 were close...still no excuse for being swept. Then the Kings added Kovalchuk, which wasn't spectacular, but was counted on to help the PP and probably score 25 goals....then after a horrible start, Stevens is fired....WD comes in and the ENTIRE SEASON SUCKED!!! The only things that were amusing / interesting to watch, was the play of Jack Campbell, Cal Peterson and Luff and Wagner....and to a lesser degree, Walker and Roy...and also start watching the draft and trade deadline. Terrible, overall to be a King fan.

This time now, no one is expecting the Kings to make the playoffs, so you're really not going to be terribly disappointed with another 31-42-9. And it is not out of the question that Kopi, Kovy, DD, Quick and Toffoli have much better years and possibly make the playoffs...maybe Kempe or another younger player have their best year yet. like to see what Grundstrom can do as well...but no Cup Team, so do not care one way or another. I am looking forward to seeing what McLellan can do and much better than watching WD40 be totally lost at all facets of the game. So, just having a real NHL coach will make games better and hopefully see a system that can play some up tempo and more fun to watch.

And it's also exciting to have the deepest pool of quality prospects ever, to follow all of them and see the next generation of King players. So many are turning pro - Kupari, JAD, Michael Anderson, Durzi, Phillips, Sodergran and maybe 2 make the Kings. Can't recall 6 quality players turning pro the same year. There could be a few surprise as well, in Brickley and Lizotte, being outside shots in making the Kings and actually being decent.

Then keeping tabs on Turcotte, Bjornfot, Fagemo, Kaliyev, Dudas, Parik, Spence, Nousiainen, Thomas, etc will be great as well.

There's really a lot to look forward to...and in keeping low expectations for the Kings, can only surprise to the upside! If....Vilardi plays, all the better.

So just to be clear: you think the Kings should have continued trading prospects and picks in 16/17 for another run? If not a rebuild, then what exactly should the course have been?

I don’t know how you can parade around those 102 points after seeing how the Kings backed into the playoffs and then promptly rolled over for the Sharks. Are we praising the Lightning for their amazing 18/19 regular season? No. Regular seasons mean absolutely nothing when you go out like a punk in the first round.

The Kings woeful salary structure, age, and depth issues were more than apparent by 2016. An intelligent GM would have seen that, and also noted the Kings’ 102 points were grossly inflated by 3v3 smoke and mirrors. And they STILL lost the division down the stretch despite leading it since October.

What kind of GM would want to continue going all in after a season like that?

No, my point about the Lightning was that great regular seasons are nothing to hang your hat on if you can’t go deep in the playoffs. Do we celebrate the Sharks for their long history of Pacific Division championships? No. Do we celebrate the Kings 17/18 season? No. Success is measured in the playoffs, not the regular season.

Moreover, the Lightning are very obviously in a much different position now than the Kings were in 2016. That position being “still a young competitive team with depth” and not “has been.”

Well, you probably shouldn't use the Lightning as the analogy to why the Kings should have rebuilt after a 102 point season then. The 18/19 Lightning are actually a fantastic counter example to your argument because I don't think anyone is advocating for them to rebuild this year despite getting swept in the first round.
