We have so much quantity and not enough top end quality. Iafallo needs to prove he's a 1LW and score 50-60 points this year or move to a third line role.

Kempe needs to prove he's a 2C this year.

Grundstrom is a legit player. Probably a 45 point 2LW. Hopefully Luff can take Toffoli's spot.

Jaret-Anderson Dolan should be in the NHL as the 3C.

Not sure if this has ever really been discussed, but I was just looking on Capfriendly and realized Kovalchuk had 13.15 million of his 18.75 million paid in signing bonuses over the first two seasons. Assuming his signing bonus was paid on July 1st, as is customary, he is only owed $5.6 million TOTAL over the next two seasons in real cash. His trade value is definitely higher (not saying high, but relatively higher) now that his signing bonuses have all been paid. Also makes 'retaining salary' easier for AEG to swallow because they are retaining more cap hit than actual dollars.

The challenge remaining with Kovalchuk is finding the right fit for a trade partner. The player holds a NMC this season and can submit a 7 team trade list next season. Here are 7 teams that could be a fit.

NYI
NYR
Bos
Fla
Dal
Was
Tbl

I think the strategy for trading Kovy should be for recapturing cap space and be willing to accept low returns, ideally, and even perhaps throwing in a sweetener to make a deal (LaDue, Rhempal).

I could see any of those teams interested... if we offered to retain 50%.

Grimson on the Kings was one of the best enforcing I have ever seen since Marty McSorley.

Even after taking a punch from Parker in the pre-season he came back with a vengeance, including a KO of Reid Simpson.

When Stu was on the ice, there was a level of fear and respect.

Being a Kings fan since 92, the most impactful enforcers on the team were McSorley, Grimson and Ivanans.

Rychel was too small and they had to bring Marty back, Churla was short lived, Matt Johnson barely got started and was lost in expansion draft, McKenna was awful and moved on and became a decent fighter, Ken Belanger didn't like fighting, Brennan/Flinn couldn't make it full time, Parros only had one full year. Westgarth barely played in two seasons. Let's not forget about Troy Crowder and his less than 50 games in two seasons.

Man. For one year Clifford and his Superman punch was Superman like. Until people realized he couldn't actually fight.

The thing with Clifford was he was utterly fearless and just threw recklessly, all offense, until better, more technical fighters started tooling him that way, then Reaves finished the job.

You can even see it 15 seconds into this video from juniors, dude is just staring straight at every punch.

No one can every question his guts but he had no instinct to protect himself.

So, we are going to trade assets in order to move a contract to open up cap space so that we can get assets for taking on other contracts?

Yup, so Kovy + LaDue for a 4th and 6th rounders. Then a trade like the Marleau deal to bring back a late first.

Ivanans was horrible. Even 12 years ago goons were being phased out and he was a total liability on the ice. He legit might have been the least talented player I ever saw play for the Kings.

Grimson was in that last of the goons group, he wasn't a huge liability because every team carried a liability.
Rychel could play a little, I think he could have maybe even hung in the league today. He was a better player than AA is right now.

The only thing I didn't like about Ivanans was we kept hearing about how legendarily crazy he was and we really even only came close to seeing it once, the night he tried to jump over a linesman to get to Staubitz for being a f***ing turd like always, and settled for knocking out Shelley's tooth before looking around for someone else to kill. If he played with a bit more of a screw loose, man.

Ivanans wasn't good at enforcing. Sure, he could fight the other tough guy but he didn't know how to be an enforcer like Stu.

100% agreed. Like Herby points out, he was in his prime when the role started becoming obsolete, and couldn't play enough or hold anyone accountable enough either. He was an aircraft carrier on Big Bear Lake.

I'm just saying it's unfortunate he didn't really scratch the surface of his persona as heralded.

man i don't think i've ever seen someone legitimately run away from a fight like that before, especially after that kind of chickenshit hit

He's very lucky Shelley came to the rescue, unfortunately for all of us, Ivanans looked ready to rip him limb from limb, weight class be damned.

Staubitz ran because he's got history of being a Kings punching bag

And for some bonus footage of him being a total turd and getting fed his lunch for it without getting away
