Just a hypothetical because I don’t think Columbus is looking to move him, but Werenski is an RFA and Columbus already has 7-8 defenseman signed not counting him...what do you guys think it’d cost to land him in a deal?

We have nothing on our current roster that will excite them. So maybe they don't hang up on:
Our 2020 1rd pick + Clague + Campbell? I have no ideal what cap dump to add maybe Toffoli? CBJ will still laugh this off, but we should not move our first anyway so I don't see it happening from a Kings perspective.

I rather just sign a UFA and keep those assets for more futures.

If Gardiner doesn’t sign soon and we can get him at a discounted rate and term even for a year would anyone be interested? Plays the left side, can move the puck and would eat some minutes.

We have Drew that is one of the best defensive Dman in the world to help cover Gardiners gaffes and he could help our PP a bit.

Could always eat some salary and trade him to a contender at the deadline.

No matter what he would look better beside Drew than Forbort and I already feel sorry for our goalies this year.

I’d rather lose 5-4 than 1-0, so sure

Not sure if this has ever really been discussed, but I was just looking on Capfriendly and realized Kovalchuk had 13.15 million of his 18.75 million paid in signing bonuses over the first two seasons. Assuming his signing bonus was paid on July 1st, as is customary, he is only owed $5.6 million TOTAL over the next two seasons in real cash. His trade value is definitely higher (not saying high, but relatively higher) now that his signing bonuses have all been paid. Also makes 'retaining salary' easier for AEG to swallow because they are retaining more cap hit than actual dollars.

That’s an interesting point. Think New Jersey would welcome him back? Or maybe Colorado? Hell, even a team like Ottawa might want a big name with a big hit at a low cost.

Why? Where does he fit on the roster? Maybe Ontario?

Same place as Frk. If one is here, the other is in Ontario. Or, they're both in Ontario. Or, if the youth isn't up to par, they're both Kings.

As we saw this year, it's more about how Kovalchuk plays. Is he a need for anyone for 2 full seasons? Probably not. You have to have the right place for him, on the right team, with the right center. The right coach will be another factor. I don't know if there's anyone that can make him play defense, so you have to have a coach willing to adapt to that, and this isn't 26 year old Kovalchuk anymore, putting up 40 goals and 80+ points. The way he plays is just very high maintenance, and everything has to be very right to get the most out of him as a player. Even at a $3m cap hit if the Kings retained 50%. Other teams have other players, their own young guys they want to give time to, etc.
