LeBrun:
"Talks between L.A. and Toronto regarding Patrick Marleau appear to have fizzled, which isn’t entirely surprising. The Kings were only going to do it if the Maple Leafs sweetened the deal enough and took a contract back they needed to shed. As one source said, it became to difficult to make the pieces work. Never say never, of course, the Leafs could always re-visit it with L.A., but for the moment, it appears not to be a fit."
I would like Blake to explain why Toronto needed to take a crap contract back in return in this deal.

So with Phaneuf being bought out,

Kings defense looks like,

Doughty - Forbort
Martinez - Roy
Walker - McDermid
XXXX ?

I wouldnt be suprised if they go after a Ben Chiarot, Jordie Benn, Chris Wideman, to get some depth back there

Is that recent or from back when it was shot down? With Dion's buy-out, I say giddy-up to Marleau and a 2nd for future considerations. Flip Patty at the TLD as well for even more futures.

It’s from today.

To me, that means they are definitely concerned about open roster spots for young players v. the sweetener that would be added by taking a one-year cap dump. Buying-out Dion plays in to that as well.

This is ground zero for the T-Mac era. He's going to have some input on what young guys are worth keeping moving forward, i.e. Luff, Roy, Brickley, etc.

The name that I believe Friedman mentioned the Kings were attempting to trade to Toronto was Jeff Carter. Toronto needs the cap relief, but taking on the longer term versus one year of Marleau isn't very desirable, especially if they are in fact trying to re-sign Jake Gardiner.

Blake has said that there's veterans taking away roster spots from younger players. It's definitely something he's concerned about. From that perspective it makes sense that he would be apprehensive about taking on Marleau without getting rid of another contract.

I hope this is the case.

Personally, I’m worried about it being more related to ownership, now being sold on “no playoffs in the short term while we fix this,” has demanded salaries be mitigated. The timing, or even existence of Phaneuf’s buyout may support this, dependant on your opinion of the actual quality of blueline help we have in the pipeline, and the actual value in opening up roster spots for these prospects.

5. Our bottom six should be the best bottom six we have had since our Stanley Cup contending roster. We have some young kids that can skate, head, forecheck, and put up some points. Our bottom 6 has Wagner, Kempe, Grundstrom, and Luff Two pair was some Vets like Clifford and Lewis. We also have some prospects that can fight for a spot, chorus competition, and possibly force some trades.
I don't think a bottom 6 can be considered good unless you have a good center anchoring it. Good 3rd line centers are usually guys who can take on tough defensive assignments, win face-offs, kill penalties and chip in some occasional offense. Who is that guy for us?

Totally fair to believe AEG doesn't want to buy a 2nd round pick for $6MM or whatever they would have to pay Marleau.

Would Alex Edler be worth a slight over pay? We have had luck with often injured nucks dmen in the past.

I think we are 1 year too soon to bring in a vet D to help the young guys out. Than again I would not hate Edler on a short deal, I do not like the comparison to Mitchell and I loved Willie.

It's not like the kings had tons of cap space. Roy, Amadio, Kempe, Iafallo still need to sign + adding Marleau made no sense without sending a contract back.
I wouldn't be surprised that they wanted to ship Dion back for Marleau + and like the the tweet said the pieces were complicated and it fell apart possibly resulting in Dion being bought out. Pure speculation on my part and I get why the leafs do not want a contract back but we are not the ones desperate for cap space to sign a 10 million dollar young star.

I totally agree. Tells you what I have thought of our Center depth since Stoll’s departure.

I believe it is our center depth that had the biggest impact on this team and on our Captain. Other teams come in know they have to shut down one line and one line only.

I believe center ice needs to be Blake’s biggest agenda. Carter has worn down and we have no true bottom 6 guys. Sorry I love Kempe but I would love him on the wing better. I am still holding out hope for Amadio though.

Unfortunately Defense is almost as bad. But that’s for another day.

Go Kings.

Not at this point, he's probably looking for a 5M year deal for 2 years etc, to me, not worth it....I think you make a decision on Forbort.....let's say you jettison him,

You have

Doughty - XXXX
Martinez - XXXX
UFA vet like the ones I mentioned and - XXXX

Then let Walker, Roy, McDermid, Brickley, Clague, fight it out in camp,

If you keep Forbort, you still let those guys fight out, less slots, or you use Forbort as that Vet now, on the 3rd pairing.

Akil Thomas and Kupari give me hope down the middle too. Maybe not this year but next.

The Kings have $14M in cap space. None of the players you mentioned are getting a big raise, with the outside exception of Kempe, and I would say 3-4 years at $3M a season would be in the ballpark for him. The Kings have plenty of cap space to take on Marlow for a season, or at least up until the trade deadline. Where it gets tricky is which players can be sent down without having to clear waivers.

I am fine with Marleau blocking a kid's roster spot next season up until the trade deadline.
