If philly is shopping for goalies, maybe the other rumors are true as well and they’ve soured on Nolan Patrick. He’s an rfa and it’s up in the air what his next deal is, but he’s not due a big payday based on his numbers.

Maybe Philly would move Patrick and one of their third round picks for Quick and Carter, with 25% retained salary each.

Quick would provide a backup to Hart and Carter would end up where he started his ludicrous contract, so he shouldn’t have a great reason to suddenly retire.

Kings would get younger and save money, plus add a potential 2c who is still young.

I double-dare you to put that proposal on the Flyers board and see what the reaction is!

There might not be much interest in Quick given his contract, age and injury history.
Campbell has a dirt cheap contract, draft pedigree and is still fairly young. If I was Buffalo, Columbus or Carolina I would be calling about him not Quick.
Split starts for Petersen and Quick to start the year and hope Cal take his opportunity.

Since the Stanley Cup has been one and it is now a new season I think we should try and bring some positive karma to this team. The off-season has just begun but we already have some positive notes.

1. We have a top 5 pick plus the 22nd and 33rd overall. That is by far the best shape we have been in years. We have 10 picks in the draft overall and we actually have a prospect cupboard to supplement.

2. WD has been shot into the sun. No more tank commander. Our new coach may not be everybody’s choice but he comes with a lot of respect around the league and a fresh start for locker room. He alone is worth the 10 point improvement in the standings.

3. The buyout of Dion. I among some others may question it’s timing but it is done. Big Mac can replace him and provide the same quality of service basically at the same price if you combine the buyout penalty and Mac’s contract. We get a mean or Dion in a younger stronger body with some possible upside.

4. The resurgence of many of our players. Kopitar, Doughty, and Quick are the backbone of this team and all struggled last year. New locker room, fresh start, injection of youth will hopefully breathe some fresh air in their sails.

5. Our bottom six should be the best bottom six we have had since our Stanley Cup contending roster. We have some young kids that can skate, head, forecheck, and put up some points. Our bottom 6 has Wagner, Kempe, Grundstrom, and Luff Two pair was some Vets like Clifford and Lewis. We also have some prospects that can fight for a spot, chorus competition, and possibly force some trades.

I just hope this year we can be a little more lighthearted and have a little more fun. I think last year the team dragged us down and we dragged each other down. It’s not a fun way to cheer for your favorite team.

Quick doesn't have any trade value.

You'd have to give up an asset to get someone to take on his contract.

That might change if he has a great bounce back year, but as of now he has negative value.

He still had value in January, before his season imploded.

Blake missed his opportunity to get some value for him

Hope it makes sense now ;)

I knew it was rumored, and I expected it, I just still don't see why. We save $3 million this year, $1.8 next year, and then are on the hook for $1 million the following two years. We could have just stuck him in the press box and been done with it. But I guess he was an issue in the locker room, or one of the "entitled" players, or whatever.

In 2021-22 and 2022-23, we'll be spending $2 million on Phaneuf and Richards.

In 2021-22 and 2022-23, we'll be spending $2 million on Phaneuf and Richards.

I recall an interview earlier in the season where Phaneuf was asked about his mentor/leadership role, and he seemed to suggest that he can still play and be a useful player (clearly delusions of grandeur).

I don't think the cap hit means as much as just getting rid of him as a distraction. He was an utter disaster on the ice every shift he took, and he was not going to be happy being a healthy scratch.

From The Athletic back when he was made a healthy scratch:
Later, there was a note of defiance in response to a fairly routine question about mentoring the younger players.
“I’m not that old. So I will say that,” said Phaneuf, who will turn 34 on April 10.

“I’ve got lots left. Mentor, whatever you want to call it, I’ve got a job to do as well. I feel good. I know I’ve played a long time. I’ve got more left. Right now, it’s about working to get back in the lineup. When you get back in, you want to do your job.

“Besides that, I’ve got nothing more to say.”

The Kings actually do get a little bit of cap relief in the first two years of the buyout, and then have a cap hit a little over $1M in the last two years of the buyout hit.

I would do our second 1st round pick plus Campbell for Nolan Patrick. The 22 pick is a crap shoot, while Patrick has pedigree and probably just needs more time to develop. He could be our future 2C.

Hell f***ing no.

The player we pick at 22 alone will probably be better than Nolan Patrick.

I would be open to trading that 22AO pick but not in that deal and not for that player.

Ehlers from Winnipeg, who its been rumored are listening to offers? For sure I'd go with the 22 as the starting point and then find the added low cost part (s) they might be able to use. We got a few of those, get that package done and I'd be all over dealing the 22OA.

January of what year? 5 months does not change anything. Still 33, $7m in cash next year, and 4 years of term.

Goalies don't bring that back, and as you say, Patrick has pedigree. They're not downgrading from the 2nd pick to the 22nd pick in 2 years. Maybe one day Patrick is only worth the 22nd pick, but probably not yet. Throw the 5th pick in there somewhere, and then there might be a discussion. Even then, the Kings are still adding.

When you're talking added low cost parts, do you mean the Grundstrom/Durzi type low cost adds like it was for Muzzin, or Clifford/LaDue? They would actually have to give something up to get a 23 year old that has hit 60 points a couple times. Like with Patrick, the 5th pick is much closer to where Ehlers was drafted than 22. While that pick is nice to have, we might be overvaluing it a little bit.

For Ehlers I would consider Kempe, AI, or Clague, Walker, LaDue, or Roy plus the 1st. If they want to go ELC then or 1.5 - 2 M I would talk that up all day long. Elhers would be a legit scorer worth moving some combo of the 1st and another player that could help them and keep their cap lower to be able to keep their big payday guys.

I was never high on Patrick even before he was drafted. I do hope you lives up to the expectations from his draft position, but I don't think he will. my opinion, obviously.

this would be a no brainer for me. Patrick has not fallen off a cliff to that value and I don't think Campbell makes up the difference. Would love this.

I guess that had nothing to do with bad management.
Of course, it had everything to do with bad management. It wasn't Dionne's fault that back then the Kings were looking for just one name to sell tickets, but the rest of the roster, meh.

LeBrun:
"Talks between L.A. and Toronto regarding Patrick Marleau appear to have fizzled, which isn’t entirely surprising. The Kings were only going to do it if the Maple Leafs sweetened the deal enough and took a contract back they needed to shed. As one source said, it became to difficult to make the pieces work. Never say never, of course, the Leafs could always re-visit it with L.A., but for the moment, it appears not to be a fit."

Well said. I actually think they have a good shot at a solid down payment on a decent retool and can be pretty good next year. If they make good decisions about the draft and trades/UFA.

I agree with all but especially #3. I was in the camp of give him popcorn this year and buyout next, but it is done. Move on and get excited about who we have.
