You can create a roster spot by parking Dion in the press box, if he doesn't like not playing he can waive his NMC for Ontario.

I agree. If we buy him out this year, we have a bad cap hit in 20-21 and still have him on the books for an additional two years. If he sits in the press box next season, and then we buy him out, his cap hit in 20-21 and 21-22 is palatable. He can fill in the lineup in an emergency and be a mentor in practice.

"Beyond Phaneuf, there are other high priced veterans the Kings would love to move on from. Dustin Brown is due $5,875,000 per year for three more seasons. Jeff Carter has a contract for three more seasons at $5,272,727 per year. Both are 34-year-old. Both have been linked to potential trades over the past few seasons. The Kings would be happy to unload one or both of these players to give them more flexibility with their cap and roster."

You won't find a lot of people in the organization agreeing with the statement that the Kings "would be happy" to trade Brown. If you look through this thread you'll find plenty of discussion on how to deal Phaneuf, Carter, Toffoli, whether or not trading Quick is the right move, but you won't find much discussion on trading Brown.

maybe now is the time to deal brown though. I want him to retire a king and have zero interest in moving but could be the right time as he has proven his rebound season was not a fluke and has loads of intangibles. Plus given St. Louis just won playing a more physical game there could be a market.

Again do not want to move him, but LA maybe smart in doing so.

The Kings could probably get some action on Brown from a contending team looking to add some physical play, if they retained about $2M of his cap hit.

I said it during the season as the trade deadline approached, I think Brown would make a lot of sense for Tampa Bay. The Kings could take back Callahan in return and use him for one season, and take a good prospect off Tampa's hands. Total pipe dream, but start by asking for Cal Foote in return for Brown at $2M retained and taking on all of Callahan's cap hit for next season.

The Kings are not looking to move Brown from everything I've read.

If Brown get moved (unlikely) Buffalo would be the logical destination. It is close to home for him, and the Sabres desperately need someone to teach them how to win and get over the hump. They have plenty of cap space, and we would not have to retain as long as the return was not excessive. Again, I am not advocating this and Dustin would have to approve, but this is a deal that would make sense for both sides (cap space and getting younger for us, veteran leadership and physicality for them).

Home? He lives in L.A. year round. It's where he grew up sure but does he want to move his tribe back to the frozen north after all they've ever really known is Hermosa Beach?

I'm pretty sure Nicole would be pissed. Everyone knows she makes the important decisions in that household.

It is important to note at this stage of Brown's contract he must submit a list of 7 teams to which he would not accept a trade. The other teams are fair game.

Buying him out now will tell you a lot about what they think about competing over the next two years with that $5MM cap penalty in Year 2.

They will have that same cap hit in year 2 if they don’t buy him out. It is years 3 and 4 which are different and the amount is so small it won’t matter

I see the case for starting Quick but at the same point why not let the younger goalies find themselves when the kings become competitive rather than during

I think if there are no takers for Quick you start him and then hope for an in-season trade. Having Quick/Campbell in the NHL and Peterson in AHL is not the worst thing.

Brown goes nowhere he retires a King and if Quick was to be moved , Brown would be our heart and soul of the team. He’s putting up points again and meshes well with Kopi. Carter has a low cap hit and it was the first full year like Karlsson after a serious injury so I’m not sure Carter is done , I think he will bounce back and with him in our bottom 6 if we were to get better pieces for top 6 I believe makes our team deeper and better . Phaneuf has to go but idk , Quick I just like u am having a hard time thinking about but if there was any season to trade him it’s this year . If we are not contenders we don’t need him and Petersen is no longer waiver exempt and much better in the NHL and Campbell is a capable backup . Petersen can be our Binnington if the roster shapes up the right way . Quick being moved would also give us more cap flexibility to fill holes . I’d like to see Lewis moved as well that’s an extra 2 million in cap space and his role can be played by a younger hungrier player with a lower cap hit .

There are more savings next year if they buy him out after this season, plus there is only one year after that instead of two. They get cap savings this season but it is right back on them next season, so it doesn't really matter in the context of signing someone good to a long-term deal, something you have to do with UFAs.

Buy him out now and it is simply to free up his spot plus use this year's savings towards taking on some sort of cap dump, if possible.

I guess I did word it wrong though since he would be addition by subtraction as it pertains to competing. It's just that they wouldn't be doing it for the cap savings this year but rather to simply move on.

Further bolstering my point is this fantastic quote from an article in The Athletic today:

As far as the Kings go, they have a lot of other problems they’re dealing with. Panarin would help, but as a scout said to us, L.A. jumping into the free-agency market and bringing in expensive talent on a long-term deal would be adding “shit on shit.”

According to Capfriendly he is waiver exempt for another year.

Are u sure ? I swear I read earlier in the year either it was Rosen or someone else that Petersen was not waiver exempt . If that’s the case it’s different we can go one more year and see what we got both in the NHL and the farm
