I think Burke said something to the affect that they are all in as long as Crosby is still playing at a high level.

Yeah that's what Burke did to the Leafs too. He's going to cost them 5 years. I'll give him credit for refusing to tank but man are the Pens ever set for a complete rebuild. On the other hand you kinda just have to let Crosby and Malkin and Letang retire and then tank just like Chicago now. What a mess.

This is the best draft in years, right? And we're picking higher than we have since 2012.

I'd like to see FSG get a competent GM in during the next two months, and prepare as if they;'re going to pick a player. Maybe we'll get lucky and someone good will fall to us. But if a good trade opportunity presents itself, let it go. It will be an important statement to the players in the room: we're still trying to go for it, because we believe that there are still miles left in the core trio.

The idea of trading for Gibson, though, worries the hell out of me. I'd rather go the UFA route, and grab a pair of 1B guys (while moving DeSmith). We've got so many holes to fix in this team that giving up alot for Gibson would probably just be a waste of the limited resources we have to work with.

You make it sound like the Pens have bottomed out. They just missed the playoffs with a roster that was flawed in very obvious ways, while Crosby and Malkin played at a very high level for 35/36 (and managed to stay healthy).

By contrast, Chicago had several years of awful finishes between 2018-20 and THEN decided to give up a king's ransom and a massive deal to get Seth Jones in 2021. That was four years of clear decline, followed up by a UFA mega deal that hasnt restored their fortunes. It's not really a comparable situation yet.

People said the end would be at hand for the Pens when the core trio gave out. Well, multiple other facets of the team (coaching, depth, goaltending) gave out before they did. It stands to reason you should at least try to mix up the formula at least once before giving up. Then again, the Pens are keeping Sullivan and the same team "structure" in place, thinking that is going to solve things, then there probably isnt any point in bothering. They need a complete organizational refresh in terms of leadership if they're going to make even a bit of noise in the remaining years.

edit: I think I misread what you were saying. You mean that when the Pens do bottom out, they need to go the Chicago model and just get rid of everyone. I dont disagree, but I think we're a few seasons away from that. Next few years are going to be a nostalgia tour for the fans. Except as of 11:15 Burke was already canned lol, so maybe not.

I'm warming up to the idea of 2 goalies in UFA and burying DeSmith in the A, DeSmith while imperfect, erratically inconsistent and not ideal is still a nice card to hold in the deck in case of emergency, he is what is but still a fine 3rd option.

Hi, I'm a Jackets and Preds fan. I don't want to see Saros moved without an elite prospect, young player, or top pick coming back.
As much as people get crap for liking two teams I wish I grew up doing so. Would have been better for my health one, and two there is a chance both can play in the Cup. It’s brilliant actually. Especially with how stressful being a fan is. I’ve lost hair, and lacerated kidneys rooting for the Pens (aged my insides at least).

It's the fault of my being spiteful when Jim Balsillie tried to screw over my friends and family. (I'm a quarter Southerner on my mother's side. ;) )

Ask Devils fans about Dawson Mercer (18th)
Ask Wild fans about Matthew Boldy (12th).
Ask Hurricanes fans about Seth Jarvis (13th).

All three are big contributors to their PLAYOFF squads. It’s not far off that number 14 can do the same all while helping the Penguins establish an identity via the draft again.
Each of those players have two NHL seasons of experience. What do the Penguins care about a draft pick who maybe will pan out two years from now when Crosby's contract is up by then?

Don't trade it.

Pens will wind up moving up the max and take Michkov.

This is the way of the NHL lol

Considering the Penguins more recent draft history (from 2016 to present) it would not surprise me to see the Pengunis trade down at the draft to get more picks.

Only two players picked by the Penguins from 2016 to 2022 have player in at least 20 games and they were both traded before they were able to play a game with them.
