This looks like a lateral move for the Penguins, and a life raft for Winnipeg.

If they are both good prospects, then Pittsburgh is taking on more risk because they didn't really have to make this deal.

Funny how Penguins like to extend so much their "closely out of the playoffs" -window.

Yager is the better prospect on long run, imo. So great deal from the Jets.

Honestly, I can't blame the Penguins for going all-in on these last few years with this core.

They've given this franchise 3 Cups, 4 Finals and make the team a shit ton of money over the past nearly 20 years. Crosby, Malkin and Letang will all have their numbers hanging from the rafters in a few years. I think they deserve to have a team that tries to contend for the playoffs, even if another Cup run is highly unlikely versus suffering through the initial painful years of a rebuild and/or getting dealt elsewhere.

Solid trade overall for both teams.

On paper, the real winners are the Jets. They get a top prospect for another prospect that didn't want to sign with them.

Now who will be better in the NHL, nobody knows, time will tell.

And McGroarty is only 10 months older, so i'm not sure about the immediate impact even though he seems to be more NHL ready.

Bold move from the Pens and it makes it interesting in a historically boring month of august

Pittsburgh, where prospects go to die... In the last 10 years do the Penguins have any draft picks or acquired prospects that had a good career in the NHL? 2013 was probably the last year.
Well, it's bad scouting. The prospects that are even remotely able to play, play..."Cros and the kids" in the Final, Matt Murray over legacy Fleury, Olli "Vegetable Lasagna" Maatta playing 20 minutes as a lad...the weird situation with Pittsburgh is: they are terrific at developing talent, horrible at finding talent.

Lot of turnover in the latter area under Dubas, we'll see where it goes.

But the Penguins have gotten more GP and points over the last ten years from undrafted players than drafted players. Last year, we got one point from an entry-level contract. Rights-relinquished defenseman, Jack St. Ivany.

Yes, they won their back to backs with the additions of Rust, Guentzel, Murray, Dumoulin, Sheary.

Kinda weird everyone’s reaction was to overrate Yager. It’s a lateral move where the Pens get the guy who will be in the NHL this year and the Jets get equal value for a prospect who asked out. McGroarty is the unanimously higher ranked prospect.

How many times have Pens drafted in the 1st round during those 10 years?

How many prospect were they dealing for when they were competing for the Stanley cup during those years as well?

They just haven’t had any good prospects since 2017 it has nothing to do with development.

McGroaty is a better prospect than Yager but I was really hoping to have both. Hard to complain from the Penguins POV though and I think this is about as good of a return as Winnipeg could get.
This is pretty much how I feel. Someone is going to go dig up a post a made a few weeks ago that says something to the effect of: "We like McGroaty a lot, but not for our top prospect".

WTF is with recent American Prospects and Ghosting teams

this generation is soft AF
A lot of them are NTDP guys. The NTDP is just a junior all star team where USA Hockey treats them as elite because they are. Entitlement comes with that, they feel they should get what they want/deserve

Another fact is that a lot of born and bred US kids would prefer to live and work in the States, so many don't want to be in Canada.

He's a 14th overall pick going into his D+3 season, plays forward and spent 2 seasons at a top college program, putting up 52 points in 36 games last season.

I didn't watch him all that closely this past season, but that seems like a resume for an NHL-ready prospect.

Yea, but he wouldn't sign with Winnipeg unless they guaranteed him a spot on the team.

Shitty attitude to have.

Who is he displacing on the Pens this year since he signed with the expectation he'd play this season? They already have too many forwards as is.

It just pisses me off hearing teams can't literally get in contact with this guys. Like completely left in the dark to the point that going straight to voicemail and texts being undelivered is like "i guess he wants to be traded.
