Yes you save since Poehling was on the main roster. His cap hit counted the moment of the trade.

This trade saves them $2.125M. It's not complicated. Today, that is the amount of cap space they created. What happens later is something that will be counted later.

That's conflating the money "that was moved" with the money "that you save", which are 2 different thing. You don't save anything by moving a 750k contract because that 750k player either need to be replaced or he's not on your active roster.

I get that Mike Matheson has some qualities the Habs are looking for, but does he play the right side at all?

If not, this trade in isolation doesn't make sense? The habs are stacked with LHD prospects, but very slim on the right side. Trading Petry makes that worse if Matheson is strickly a LHD.
Stupid trade. Makes no sense. Poehling was given for free.

I can't believe I have to explain this so often. TODAY, they created $2.125M in cap space. Again, that is TODAY.

What they do TOMORROW or LATER will be counted TOMORROW or LATER.

We are talking about TODAY!

I'm just glad that Petry is gone...you don't need guys who quit on the team the way he did poisoning the room. Matheson is younger and cheaper, and even if he's only 80% as good as Petry is when he's 'on' (which was RARE last season), it's still a win when you factor in jettisoning the lack of character.

Poehling was also on the ice when Kassian ran Monty

Exactly. Hughes accomplished the two things he wanted to do:

1- Trade Petry without retaining any salary.
2 - Acquire a vet D to replace those minutes and to help not have to rush any prospects that aren't ready for those roles.

If Hughes was not going to get Matheson in return, he would look to acquire a vet D another way. This way, he checked both boxes in one move.

+ player is from MTL + he's supposed to be a good pro to have around youngsters + it potentially opens up moving Edmunston sooner then we tought (like to his home province of Manitoba...)

So now we know MB is a much better GM at trading. Even the Dach one is questionable. He also looks like Franklin the turtle

...what

hope you're trolling
No I’m not. Matheson is less valuable than a bum on skid row and a 4th round pick hardly works out. Better off throwing Petry on waivers and saving on cap that way and not taking Matheson as we need to actually develop our billion D men coming up. Don’t come at me as if you know the facts as these are opinions

If Matheson is worse, that actually serves the Habs' purpose. It will help them have another high pick next year.
