No I’m not. Matheson is less valuable than a bum on skid row and a 4th round pick hardly works out. Better off throwing Petry on waivers and saving on cap that way and not taking Matheson as we need to actually develop our billion D men coming up. Don’t come at me as if you know the facts as these are opinions
Our billions D men coming up will need AHL seasoning and some veteran presence when they come up. This is not a video game where you can ice a full line up of young players with high potential and make it. We don't need more botched development that turns into more Metes or Beaulieus.

So now we know MB is a much better GM at trading. Even the Dach one is questionable. He also looks like Franklin the turtle
LOL..................ok sure if you say so.

The GM said they would not throw the young D to the wolves............they needed a vet back, to help the kids...

Pretty sure you are trolling...

Weird trade.

* Hughes says he won’t trade Petry unless it makes sense.
* Trades the RD Petry for the LD Matheson who has one year more in term.
* Adds Poehling and gets a 4th. For as much as Poehling is struggling, he’s worth more than a 4th.

Can Matheson play RD? Last thing we needed was another LD.

Matheson going to be part of a trade to get Dubois? Or are the Jets asking for Eddy in that package and Matheson was added to replace him?

I don’t hate Matheson but him and Eddy block our young LD’s

If no more trades, you get a sense on what Hughes is doing… this is not planning for a tank year people!!!!
I don't think Poehling is worth more than a 4th - he's no longer waiver exempt next year and he was unlikely to make the Habs out of camp.

Guy was missing his family and it severely hurt his play and mental.

He gave us a ton of great years.
It was still very unprofessional on his part. I respect what he did for the team for all those years but it does not justify his terrible attitude.

Matheson can play the right side.

But here is what Hughes said about trading Petry:

1 - He doesn't want to retain in the trade. Check.
2 - He said if he does trade Petry, he'll bring in a vet D to take up those minutes. He ended up doing it in the same deal. Check.

This doesn't block the young D because as Hughes has said:

3 - He doesn't want to put his young D in roles they're not ready for. So this way, it allows the Habs to be patient with their young D and they will grow into those roles and will eventually replace the guys there now. Some sooner than others.

I knew someone was going to say that, Petry and his wife wanted to be closer to home which is Michigan…

Either way a player who doesn’t want to play for your team anymore and is signed 3 more years was a serious problem that we got rid of.
Totally - it needed to happen and Matheson is a fine replacement in the top 4. I like that he's from Montreal too.

I’d say lack of talent was always his biggest obstacle, but what do I know.
Don’t win mvp at wjc with no talent. He just lacked consistency at higher levels - every time he started stringing together good games he’d get injured.

I think Hughes was worried Petry would be unhappy.

While I was hoping to get good futures for Petry, clearly the market isn't there right now. So either you hang on to Petry, or you trade him for someone that hopefully brings in futures when the market is right, and who is happy here in the meantime. Hopefully Matheson is that guy.

f*** that. These last two years were f***ing terrible for most people. He missed his family and played like shit because of it.

It's not unprofessional at all. You can't always control yourself when you're in a bad mental state.

He still showed up. He still tried. But his head was clearly elsewhere.

My dog is my life. I almost lost her last year. I don't even know what I would have done with myself without her. I know my work and personal life suffered while she was sick. And it's still suffering because of that, even though a miracle recovery happened. So I can just imagine being separated from family.

Poehling = 4th round pick

Matheson and cap space = Petry

The trade is closer than most people think. Matheson is slightly worse than petry but younger, can do what he does: being mobile, so-so defensive and play on the powerplay on the first wave on a weak team and log second pairing ice time. As far as Poehling goes, plenty of injuries on the roster last year and got stuck on the fourth line on the worst team in the league. Couldn't be put in the AHL anymore he wasn't worth much more than a mid-round pick as a reclamation project. Petry will probably play on the second wave of the powerplay at 34 years old on pittsburgh replacing matheson in his role at 6.5 million.

Lets throw value right out the window!

The worst part is Petry’s value was super low due to age and his horrible season but he will probably be great in Pittsburg.

I believe he would have been great this year even if he stayed on the Habs. I think last year was an outlier. But even when you see how he was when MSL came on board, he was the Petry from the last few years.

He will be surrounded by better players in Pittsburgh, especially offensively. So he will be a good fit there.

This trade is sbout a wash. As far as both players go, meh whatever. Poehling is lucky to get 20 goals in 5 years. We didn’t gain enough cap flexibility in this trade imo. This trade failed to address the issue (cap flexibility).
I think it gained some cap flexibility (but I understand why you wanted more) - but bringing back a younger vet dman who hopefully can play top 4 minutes was a big win IMO.
