We still don't have enough cap to sign Dach with a 12-6-2 lineup so I'm wondering what else we're cooking.

They're surely cooking something else. I doubt they now cross their arms and put their feet up and are done.

As for Dach, If he simply signs his QO, there is enough cap space to sign him. If they want to sign him for more and with some term, they can put Byron on off-season LTIR to create more cap space. That would give them an extra $3.4M to work with and will be able to sign Dach.

And a lot of greenhorns.

We don't want the dcore to be good!

Harris is ready to learn at the NHL level. He'll be 23 this year, same age as Romanov.

If Barron isn't ready, Schue can slide in on the rd right side. But I think Hughes will bring in an RD.

Think long and hard about the Petry contract and if you wanted us to be under it this time next year and the one after that.

At his age, with his inconsistency, with his awful performance last year under Ducharme… I mean he was in no small part responsible for the Ls and blowouts. Remember he would make the wrong read time after time? Remember when his goalie got run over and he didn’t so much as give a look to the offender?

Dude checked out right after signing a mega contract. That’s unfortunate for us but looks awful on him. We don’t need him around when the new team core has gelled together, that’s for sure, but he would’ve been immovable or a buyout case has he stayed put

Petry played last year, like he was trying to get fired! It was beyond bad.............never seen a vet check out so badly.
A slight recovery under MSL, but at that point he did the damage.

If Matheson is good for us that would be great.

But if he's so good, why are the Pens moving him for 34 year old Petry?
Because next year Petry projects to be better than Matheson and Penguins are in a win now situation. If I am a Penguin fan, I am really worried about the following years and that the team has assumed a large contract for a player that is clearly in decline. I would predict that by 2024, Matheson will have passed Petry in effectiveness. Wouldn't it be a kick in the teeth if that surpassing happens sooner.

He’s fast, electric and has a great offensive awareness. You’re gonna see him grab the puck from the D zone and score goals from end to end with no help… VERY fun to watch.

He takes alot of risks but if you pair him with a stay-at-home D, he should be fine.

I wish him the best!
Our GM said he plays a bit like Duncan Keith.

If this is true.................. damn.

From my (very faint) memory of him, I see the comparison for sure. Obviously he’s nowhere near as good but the playstyle and silhouette kinda tickled my brain “hey that’s like Keith!” the handful of times I’ve seen him

The off-season LTIR is bad for business for your entire season going forward if I completely understood how the whole system works.

The best option is to comply with the set cap with all your LTIR players before the season starts and then move them there.

I can see them just trading Byron to Arizona for a third-round pick or a fourth if they don't manage to make any moves to shed salary.

Matheson will make some highlight reel plays now and then, and was better last year than the prior 2 (1 of which saw him playing at LW at times) but he's not a good decision maker and can make some real boneheaded plays.

Overall he's a net plus on a team, but other than being a really good skater I don't see anything else that reminds me of Keith.

If Matheson is 50% the player prime Keith was, I'll take it.

Hmmm idk about all that … but Matheson is unique. He looks like a fast winger who can play D. He covers all the ice with his skating. He can join the rush and come back to his position in seconds. That’s why it’s very important to pair him with someone who can cover his ass when things go wrong.

You can bet on Matheson to open the play when the forwards are sleeping.

Of course they are incomparable.

But you can’t help but make some connections sometimes when a player leans a certain way or makes a certain kind of motion or manoeuvre on the ice.

In any case, highlight reels and boneheaded mistakes are both fine in what should be a spectacularly messy tank year.

Obviously not the same impact player, never will, not what I meant but the way you described Matheson though sounds a lot like Keith.

Yea Pittsburgh had to move a D, but so did we. We had to move Petry. Yes, I know Hughes said otherwise and technically that’s correct, but it’s much better for everyone if he wasn’t here next year, so we did have to move him.

Look at what Pacioretty got last week. Mcdonaugh. If you thought we were taking no salary back and getting a 1st as well, you were mistaken to begin with

He got 2M+ in cap space and a younger defensemen who is very capable . Not sure what your issue is
We are still in a situation where we need to move money out and the guy we added has more term than Perry.. I understand that we weren’t getting Chariot type return but when KH said he was let trading him unless it made sense, well to me the difference between Matheson 4.875m$x4 years and Petry 6.25M$x3 years is worth more than a 4th never mind adding Poehling, both were done in MTL but they are upgrade in PIT…
