Are you kidding me !!! Petry said he didn’t want to play in Canada. Why you choose to disregard

Now. Because of COVID-19 border restrictions. He played hus entire peak in Canada. Which directly contradicted your statement.

You can make gross overgeneralizations if you want, but real people have different and changing needs and wants.

Most players walk from their teams at one point or another.

Plus there’s like 7 Canadian teams vs 25 US based….of course most players that walk end up on a US based team.
Ummm the players that walk actually state they don’t want to work in Canada. Why you choose to omit that part

Remember when Ryan Poehling was voted our #1 prospect ahead of Caufield and Suzuki before 20-21 lmfaoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
By the same posters that think Hutson will be our next Chelios lolooo

I'm just glad that Petry is gone...you don't need guys who quit on the team the way he did poisoning the room. Matheson is younger and cheaper, and even if he's only 80% as good as Petry is when he's 'on' (which was RARE last season), it's still a win when you factor in jettisoning the lack of character.

I don't see the point in trying to make a difference between the Matheson of Pitt vs the one from Flo. What's his use even if it's the good one? Geez, the 4th rounder might actually be more serviceable based on what we are trying to do. Unless people think Matheson is actually that great teacher that will get all the young kids to be better....which there's no indication he is.

People here want to hold onto players after showing nothing. When players have negative value. We need to trade them while they have some value

Was good to clean timmens garbage

I think people missed the Pacioretty and Benn trades. The price of clearing cap is high right now. So high that good players are traded for nothing. You can tell by a lot of comments in this thread that many fans just don't understand the current trade market.

The fact that Hughes dumped Petry for a serviceable and younger 2nd pairing defenseman is a good deal considering teams didn't want to take on Petry without either the Habs retaining or receiving a sweetener just a couple of days ago.

Do I even want to read this thread?

Considering the circumstances, I think it was an okay trade. Player in his prime who can log 20+mins while Harris/Guhle develop. Important to not give them too much responsibility too soon.

I'd assume we'll still be in the market for a RD so that we don't rush Barron on that side.

Thought the trade didn’t look good from my initial reaction, but reading pens fans comments about Matheson, I’m really coming around on the trade.

Everything will depend on whether Poehling breaks out. If he busts, then Matheson for Petry is a good deal considering how badly the latter wanted out and how public his family was about it.

I wonder if the Habs may have been in on Marino...

Either way, best of luck to Petry...was an excellent acquisition and despite bouts of inconsistency, his time here was largely a success.

Can't say I'll miss him hanging on to the pick forever while never passing it only to shoot and get it blocked lol

But good move for both teams all things considered.

Exactly. Hughes accomplished the two things he wanted to do:

1- Trade Petry without retaining any salary.
2 - Acquire a vet D to replace those minutes and to help not have to rush any prospects that aren't ready for those roles.

If Hughes was not going to get Matheson in return, he would look to acquire a vet D another way. This way, he checked both boxes in one move.

Hughes clearly didn't want 3 or 4 rookies in the lineup.

Booooo. We got a cap dump and a 4th for two assets with actual value. Awful trade. Matheson isn't good, he's way overpaid, and he's signed longer. Huge loss on this trade.

$1.5m of extra cap space for the next few years isn't worth the extra year of Matheson's anchor.

The point is the Habs probably don't need to clear cap (at least not immediately). Vegas did and I presume SJ was afraid Burns would start to fade and they would be stuck with him for 2-3 years. Now if HuGo and St Louis saw signs of regression in Petry's play last season then it was a good move.

The issue is adding Poehling to the mix.... Petry was gone. Everyone knew it. You can’t negotiate from a position of strenght.

I think they would have traded Poehling straight for a 4th pick, just to get $750k of cap relief.

He is RFA next year, we have to make place for players like Ylonen, Heineman.

If we had kept him, do you really think he could have played in the top9 ? What would be a good return for Poehling ?

I don’t see a team spending a 3rd round pick for him…
