I don't think he sucks I just don't think he is as good, especially offensively, as Petry right now. Things could change he is 5-6 years younger.
Sorry, i just used your post because it had the Hughes explanation of the transaction in it, was not directing anything at you or your views on the matter…..sorry for the mix up, that ones on me.

...so just throw the kids to the wolves, then??...we need at least a couple of vets back there to carry the water until the kids are ready to do so...this seems to be one of those cases, not to mention that Matheson isn't the "cap dump" that many in here are making him out to be...

Matheson at 4.9m is easier to stomach than Petry at 6.5m...we're saving 1.6m/yr for 3 years. We can retain and trade Matheson in his extra year.

We can sign vets. There are many still available for cheap, short term deals.

Yes, I only know Matheson so well. Hopefully he won't be or become an anchor contract.

Can he play the right side????
I have seen him play on the right. Just don’t know how frequently he’s done it.

Poehling is a bust. We got younger, faster and free'd up cap space.

I wasnt ready to give up on him until I saw him on the wing innthe top 9 with good offensive players.

We saw all these vets with no future here with Suzuki amd Caufield. We couldn't at least get a look at Poehling with them???

If it was that hard to move Petry i can't imagine how hard it'll be to move Gallagher. Gallagher will stay here until the last year of his contract. I hope he loves Montreal and he is fine with a rebuild ...

Also not surprised Poehling is gone. They didn't like him and he doesn't seem like a smart hockey player, so the MSL system was never going to be a place for him.

End of the Poehling chapter and I'll be collecting my W.
I still don’t understand how he won WJC MVP. He had that one hat trick but that was it. Luukkonen was far more deserving.

Finally and hopefully this experiment comes to an end

Petry is indeed the better player today, but he's on his last legs, Pens are going all in right away while it makes more sense for us to take the younger player.

I hear you.

You're right that he isn't Alzner. I hope Matheson does really well. Would be a nice addition if he does. AMD because he's younger and has a lower cap hit than Petry, maybe he'll have trade value for futures at some point...

I do like HuGo's reads so far.

Matheson is not really young though. By the time the rebuild will be done he'll be too old and too expensive for the role he'll likely play with us. If Matheson was 26 it would look better.

I agree that Mathewson might be under appreciated but he still isn’t has good has Petry (RD) plus he has 1 more years, if we couldn’t get value for Petry 6.25M$ x3 y how are we going to get value for Matheson at 4.85M$ x4years… I would have rather traded Petry at 50% retention and get a better return than take on4.85M$ for 4years…

Still isnt as good as Jeff Perty? wait let's roll back the clock to 28 yr old Jeff Petry
How good was Petry his first FULL season in Montreal? He had his "shaky moments"..his first full season at 28 yrs old finished the year with 16 pts.....as time rolled on he turned into a real great dman for us ,,,,,,

Mike Matheson is 28 yr old..HE WILL EVOLVE ...let's give him a chance

I think everything hinges on the next move. You dont have to win every trade on the optics.. whatever... but if he gives up to many valuable assets to aquire PLD who is in a similar place as petry albiet worth more i think most people will start to lose their ****

You’re a grown man bro. Whole account is cringe and didn’t age well btw
Come on, you be the grown man and try not to make it personal. Check my posting history, not much cringe in there

I really don't get why the team (and their fans) should endure a bad contract coming back when a player is unhappy with his situation. It's now a thing apparently in the NHL, and teams shouldn't endure it when it turns the value of the player into a negative.

Petry signed for this and the team would have been better to wait till his value rise to trade him. Didn't need to make things public and shit on the coach. He just had to break his contract if he really wanted to play in Michigan.

And I'm allowed to my opinion without receiving grown-man-bro shenanigans. I plan on changing my avatar and stuff but I did not so long ago, and there's nothing in the offseason that makes me want to change it so far

Habs save $1.5M in the deal!? Thought we needed cap. This means we need to make more moves to get Dach signed and to fit under the cap. Interesting.

Don't like loosing Poehling, but we get a good player back.

Caufield.

And Montreal sucked at drafting and developing from every country then.
Eventually we will need to trade Caufield before he becomes ufa

Americans don’t want to play in Canada unless they are on the last year of their career or beginning of career.

That’s a fact

Just like gaudrea
Just like Mathews from Toronto will want
Just like tkachuk from Calgary will want

Ya…..I collected a L on Poehling….believed in him big time.

Thought he’d maybe turn a corner here and was optimistic to see him score 15-18 goals.

All about Matheson now

A bit disappointed in the return, I thought Petry would have returned more, but if Matheson is able to build on his career year from last year, it’s not a bad pickup. We acquired a younger and cheaper defenseman, lost some depth in Poehling, which we immediately replaced in Pitlick. And we cleared some more cap, something which is obviously a priority to the management.

Gallagher will be on a mission to make more people cry but it’ll be for whole other reasons.
