Pens are the retirement club. Brutal off season, start the rebuild already.

I’m I the only one okay with this deal?
I think most of us understand that this is the best Hughes could do at this time. The writing was on the wall on the first day of UFA Frenzy — cap space is the rarest and most valued of assets.

We cringed when those other teams made deals that looked subpar to us and couldn’t understand how Hughes was not able to make some cap room or just make the one trade.

Today was our turn. We still managed to gain some cap room, get younger and did it by ridding ourselves of a toxic asset in Petry (maybe Poehling was non grata too and had his own issues in the dressing room on account of his political views, who knows).

Matheson isn't that bad, he's fun to watch if nothing else. He'll go to coast to coast to score a goal and you'll be like "which forward was that?!" He's a fantastic skater. His defense leaves something to be desired for sure, but he's not a total disaster either.

What I don't get is Hughes saying Matheson's game will be benefit more playing under MSL. Sullivan's system is basically a perfect fit for someone with Matheson's skillset, what he did last year is about the most you can hope for from him. Probably just a random GM platitude about a newly acquired player.
Martin St Louis already said 'F" the systems.....he wants his players to be creative (more unleashed)...so Matheson will be in that enviroment.

That was probably one of the things that I hated the most as a player is playing in a system," -
Martin St Louis

“Systems, I feel like you box players in to be in a certain spot,” St. Louis said a day after being named to replace Ducharme. “Sometimes you don’t allow them to make reads because of it. A concept is more playing with a little more instinct with ideas of how we want to be as a team. Now, there is structure inside concepts.

“In systems, you box players in to only certain things they can do,” St. Louis added. “That was probably one of the things that I hated the most as a player is playing in a system. I was a great player when I was allowed to make reads because the best players make the best reads. But if you take the reads out of the equation, those best players become average. So I want to make sure that I allow my best players to make reads and I’d rather them make a bad one than not making a read at all. And sometimes in systems there’s not much reads. So I’m more excited as a player playing in a concept than in a system, but there’s tons of structure in a concept. It’s just a little more freedom.”

Funny how Pens fans disagree with you for every year besides this year. I guess they have never seen him play either despite playing for them.
So he played 2 seasons in Pittsburgh - this year he was great and the other was the COVID shortened season
So by every year besides this year you meant his 44 game COVID season?

The GM could speak Mandarin and I could careless. A competent GM should be the #1 goal but due to the language criteria Molson had to find a loophole by creating a new title for Gorton.
From what I gather from interviews they work as a team which is far better than Bergevin and his bicep club of yes men. I think you're right about Gorton having the last word though.

Hope these guys are better at drafting and development then they are at making trades.

How was Petry part of our future?! He’s old and literally asked to be traded.
He wasn’t but I was hoping for pick or prospect that could have a chance / some hope of maybe being something… I was hoping he would get something for taking on Matheson or trading them Petry+ Peohling… Pit had to move a contract to make room so we paid Poehling and only got a 4th for taken the contract so they can upgrade there D…

At the end of the day, for whatever reason Petry did want to move I guess. I can only hope that Matheson can become a bigger leader and produce some points. When he is basically your default #1 dman, you know it's going to be a long season (unless another dman is acquired somehow of course). Right now it looks like the team will be going with at least 2 rookies (Harris, Guhle, Barron) + 3 vets in Matheson, Edmundson and Savard and 32 year old Wideman and his 245 career games.

Man some of you guys.... talk about Chicken Little syndrome. Guaranteed any other deals involved salary retention and i highly doubt they were getting a first back.
You'll probably all bitch about them finishing bottom 5 next year too! This is going to take 2-3 years before they're competitive.

Ya they will both have 4 consecutive 40 point seasons, it happens to every single 28 year old dman despite it being in super rare company.
Kulak never showed this type of offensive potential.

Matheson's 11 goals and 20 assists mainly at even strength clearly show that there's offense in this guy.

Petry had an 8 G 20 A season before he hit 40 points during his next season.

It's a salary issue more than anything. Matheson probably won't be here in 2 years and he's easier to move at that time. If anyone was expecting a huge return, you're out to lunch.
And there was room to resign Rem! So I'm good with all of this.

I'd trade Matheson ASAP, in case he becomes an anchor contract. He has 1 more year on his deal than Petry.

Matheson sucks but he had more points than Petry last year??? I know points aren't everything esp. for D-men but jeez...

...so just throw the kids to the wolves, then??...we need at least a couple of vets back there to carry the water until the kids are ready to do so...this seems to be one of those cases, not to mention that Matheson isn't the "cap dump" that many in here are making him out to be...

Boo him for what?
He gave us the best years of his career. His family is ready to return closer to home. Don’t forget these players are human beings.
Subban was booed even though he returned Webber and cried when he left. Petry returned us Matheson.

Can't boo Artturi, Chiarot, Kulak or Toffoli, so I'm booing the guy who forced the Habs hand for a trade, leaving the team with a longer contract at a similar cap hit for a lesser player. I don't boo often against former Habs players when at the Bell center, but this one I'll boo.

I wouldn't say he brought us to the finals. He was playing ok for a guy with a broken finger, but he was way better in the play-ins against the Pens. His reg eyes were awesome though

This is probably the deal that was rumoured to be done. Petry was vocal about going closer to home, and shipping out Romanov when you know Matheson is coming in makes some sense.

Now, the right side of the defence is a big question mark. The LD is looking jammed and there's an overload of wingers. Since draft day, Hughes has probably been working on fixing this much more than finalizing the details of the Petry trade. If Dubois really does come here, I bet players like Edmundson and Demelo are included in the deal.

Other deals gonna be made soon to acquire more cap space. Don't worry.

I think Drouin and Byron will be off the book soon.
I don’t care, Petry is a lot better than he get credit for. you need to manage your asset you aren’t getting F all for dumping Drouin and Byron especially you might retaining 50% so how much cap are you getting + those deal are done at the end year anyway… I understand not getting anything or having to include Poehling to move Byron but not Petry…

We can sign vets. There are many still available for cheap, short term deals.

Yes, I only know Matheson so well. Hopefully he won't be or become an anchor contract.
